Will they ever mix? DivX 'having a hard time' with Microsoft |
Ó
A recent interview with DivX founder Jérôme Vashist-Rota reveals the certain console domination bids for the video technology landing on the PS3 and Xbox 360. While the PS3 is currently in compliance with DivX standards, Microsoft's Xbox 360 is leaving the codec technology out in the cold.
To Vashist-Rota, it seems to be all about branding. Though he says he's not all that happy with Microsoft, it seems like he's still willing to welcome them in open arms.
When it comes to DivX branding, we have had a hard time with Microsoft. Obviously we would love for some sort of partnership to happen. Currently, Microsoft does support DivX, which is fantastic, but the company has brought in some third-party support for the Xbox 360, and we are not very happy with that.
It's all about branding. And branding can work both ways, so it is not just us losing out with the Xbox 360's lack of official certification.
So. Do you think Microsoft and DivX will eventually settle their differences and embrace each other's tech? And on a somewhat off-tangent question to the PS3 users, what say you of mkv, eh?

it would be soo helpful if PS3 got mkv support
It would be glad also to have srt subtitles support.
No they won't mix, because these codecs are better than the inhouse MS ones, meaning, they will only mix if MS buys DivX
I wish PS3 would do this. It would give me a reason to use my PS3. Although it is pretty good at keeping important papers and documents from blowing away.
I really dun understand the "Give me a reason to use my PS3".
Honestly, I use my PS3 just about daily. THeres loads of great games head *****.
Will merge your subs with your movie, the resulting divx can be played back on your PS3 with subtitles. Use the menu that pops up when you press triangle during playback.
Why dont you guy just use mkv2vob it changes mkv files to a playable format for the ps3 without converting them.
I doubt Sony would allow that because Blu-ray rips are MKV files and would only support pirates and illegal downloads.
mkv2vob like Tyrant156 points out. Convert your MKV files to VOB or mpeg or AVI. PS3 supports those. The only thing I want PS3 to support is the NTFS file system so that I won't have to split movies in half to play them on the PS3.
mkv is merely a container for video, audio, and subtitles
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is typically what ripped video is formatted in
I'd be perfectly happy with my PS3 as my primary media player (some subtitle problems but I really don't expect Sony to be the ones fitting its machine to work with my bootlegs) and its DivX license if I felt it was as chummy as this Microsoft relationship apparently is not. If PS3 were a perfectly compliant DivX machine, that'd be awesome. However, I have some files that don't play on it but that play fine on my DVD DivX player (which is nowhere near the quality, plus I love PS3 taking in Memory Cards and USB, but too many dropped files and lost synch), and the PS3 doesn't support DivX Ultra features.
That last bit about DivX Ultra makes me nervous for its potential support for DivX 7 and its MKV-based container. The next DivX could be a great thing for the scene, finally providing HD content with a great container, but if Sony is going to be so slow or negligent in supporting features out for a long time before PS3 even supported DivX files, what are the chances of them adapting to the brand new format?
Try reformatting your Storage Source to FAT16, this might help syncing, Haven't had a need to try(Pro Duo stick) since my PC is already sourced out to my TV... But I have tried other Divx files on my friends PS3 and tv with no problems.
I think the reason MS hasn't got DivX is two fold. MS have always been keen to promote their WMV format even though pound for pound DivX packs in much more and looks better. The second reason is that they pay some third party for their codec pack that allows them to play not only the mac MP4 and AAC format but also the divX files. So I'm guessing they came to an agreement with the guys that did that, that they would pay them a little bit more then what they had been paying them for just the ipod playback stuff so that the 360 will do DivX. The only problem is the DivX playback on the 360 is less then perfect because it's not an oficial implementation of DivX.
Hi. I know someone who would like to have (and use) a ps3. As you don't use it for anything else than keeping papers from flying away, would you be willing to trade your console for a heavy stone, which would do the job even better. This way both of you could profit from the deal! Please reply soon!
You don't have to split files if you have a wireless network and move yuor files that way.
I have a few films on my PS3's HDD which are over 11GB.
I rarely see anyone bothering with DivX anymore. Most people use XviD or FFMpeg instead which are free and just as good. Hell I don't know anyone who even installs DivX anymore since everyone installs the alternatives instead and the only reason they do is to watch those old pirated DVD rips they made from their BlockBuster rentals 5 years ago when DivX was actually good. Face it, DivX has already shown its age as you get better quality video from the H264 standard codecs like x264.
