Wii sells 9M units to date in Japan, PS3 breaks 4M mark

Ever wonder how much the PS3 and Wii have sold so far in Japan? Enterbrain, the publisher behind the weekly Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, has the answers.

According to Enterbrain's number-crunching, Nintendo's Wii console has sold 9,048,012 units since it first hit Japanese retail shelves in December 2, 2006. That's a roughly 1.5 million increase from last December's numbers. Very impressive, especially considering that the Wii experienced slower sales this year.

The Sony PS3, on the other hand, managed to break the 4 million mark with 4,020,563 units sold since its November 11, 2006, launch . The rather significant sales spike the console experienced this year pushed the number up around 1.4 million units from last December's, almost neck and neck with those posted by the Wii.

All of the figures above are as of December 13, 2009. No Xbox 360 numbers, but then again, the console never was too popular in Japan to begin with.
