Wheelman creative director says Midway's secret game can compete with Gears 2 graphics

Midway Games - Image 1According to Wheelman creative Director, Simon Woodroffe during a Wheelman (PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) press event:

I just saw a demo of a new Midway game that's in development. I can't tell you too much about it, but they've been on it for three months and it looks as good if not better than Gears 2.

On the game itself, Woodroffe described it as similar to Gears of War 2 but with a "whole different setup."

It's already looking as good as Gears 2, but the game mechanics are kind of different. It's going to be really big and really important. It's not often, especially when you're a cynical type, that you see a prototype or creative slice and just get blown away by it. But in this case, the hype is justified.

While some of Midway's titles do use Epic Game's Unreal Engine 3, developmental problems  in the past kept these games from making full use of the tools at hand. This time around though, Woodroffe feels that they finally have the technical know-how on their side to compete at the top level via the shared knowledge between their 600-700 developers, all of whom have Unreal Engine experience.

This mystery game isn't likely to come out until around 2010, according to Woodroffe, which begs the question: How are they going to fare against Gears 3, which may very well be out by then and will Midway still be around at all given their recent financial woes?

I doubt that it'll be as good looking as Gears 2, Epic has proven that outside of their development team no one can really utilize the Unreal 3 engine as well as they can....well, with the exception of the Bioshock team, they're the only one's who I've see that have made a game using the Unreal 3 engine that look's as good as Gears, but that was in part do to the fantastic art design. And 2010 is the release date? Well, maybe it will look as good as Gears 2, but there'll be, you know, new games by then...hell by February Gears 2 will have lost its title of best looking game on consoles, think of what it'll be like in two years.

Midway could do a better looking game easily in a way, but would it be better? lol. That's the point. And a good looking game without the good animations looks ugly anyway. But we'll see, we have to let them the chance to prove it now.

Mirror's Edge looks good too. They are off 2 types of different types of graphics but still both are running on UE3. And Mirror's Edge looks great. So not only Epic knows how to utilize UE3 engine.
