This Sony Fan Caved And Got A 360.
In the spirit of Gaming Nexus' recent article about seeing the PS3 through the eyes of an Xbox gamer (I'm going to great pains to avoid using the word fanboy in this article) what follows is a review of sorts of the Xbox 360 from the viewpoint of a PlayStation gamer. Read on those of you curious to see what a PlayStation fanman thinks of Microsoft's great white hope.
First, a little history. My first gaming console was the original Nintendo Entrainment System and I absolutely loved that machine, without a doubt some of the best gaming experiences of my life were had with that grey brick, and I'm thankful for that. I never got a Super Nintendo, not because I didn't want one, but because we really just couldn't afford one at the time, I kept up on the latest games by paying regular visits to my cousin, and games like The Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Turtles IV: Turtles In Time got played well into the night and until the skin on our thumbs turned grey, festered and calloused over, good times.
Eventually my dad got my brother and I a PlayStation, we almost got a 3D0 instead, talk about dodging a bullet! Anyway, over the next five years Sony did a good job of wresting from me the last vestiges of my Nintendo brand loyalty. I'll always have a spot in my heart for the big N, but games like Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Wipeout, Resident Evil and Tekken (to mention just a few) provided hours of fun, excitement and entertainment while catering to my desire for more "grown up" gaming. Sony had me, hook line and sinker.
It would stay that way until early this year, mainly because I never had the cash to be able to afford multiple consoles, but also because I thought I wasn't missing all that much. I figure that's when I decided to grow up about gaming, you see it's not that I hated competition, I just had blinders on and honestly thought the only games I wanted to play (with very few exceptions) were on the PlayStation platform. Then I went to E3 and saw Gears of War in the flesh, and got my hands on Lost Planet and Dead Rising (didn't hurt that Microsoft put on a good press conference). Maybe this whole Xbox thing isn't so bad after all, I thought. What sealed the deal for me was seeing the Mass Effect walkthrough video that recently went up, I'd seen stills, but had somehow avoided seeing the game in motion till then. If you haven't seen it yet I suggest you have a look, it's absolutely stunning.
And then yesterday, July 15th, in the middle of the day I made the decision on a whim. "I'm getting an Xbox 360 today," I told my brother (also a Sony dude) who scoffed at me. Fast forward a few hours, and I've got the console all set up. Some of my fellow Sony amigo's out there might feel the urge to turn away at this point, but there are many I'm sure who wonder somewhere deep inside, "what's the other side like?" Allow me to break it down for you.
First, there was a little trepidation, I've heard more than my fair share of Xbox 360 defect stories, it seems every other week someone on a message board somewhere starts a thread about how his 360 just went belly up, the red ring of death they call it. Well, the PS2 had its fair share of launch defects, and I still have my launch PS2 working just fine so maybe I'll get lucky twice. If you do decide to get a 360, get the two year extended warranty, even if you have to forgo guying a game or an extra controller to do so. And now for a closer look at the consoles strengths and weaknesses.
Pros
The build quality:
Just about everything feels really sturdy (you wouldn't want to drop the console, but that should go without saying really) cables are nice and thick, they feel like quality peripherals... well except the headset, which feels extremely flimsy.
The controller:
I've never been a fan of the Xbox controller design, the only thing I feel they got right was switching the position of the left analog stick with the D-pad. That said, it's amazing what a difference a little tweaking makes. The 360 controller isn't markedly different, but it sits better in my hands and the button placement is almost spot on. I say almost because I really think the LB and RB buttons are too skinny and too high up, making them difficult to reach in a bind. I also feel that the caps on the tops of the analog sticks are just a wee bit too small, that might be because I'm used to the size of the sticks on the DualShock, but I found my thumbs slipping off the sticks from time to time and wishing I had a little more real estate so I could get some more traction.
An easy setup:
Because real men don't need instructions, I just pulled the console and cables out of the box, plugged everything in and within minutes I was up and running. I don't really know why I was expecting it to be a bit more difficult, but setup (including the creation of an Xbox Live account) was an absolute breeze. And the reason for that?
An awesome interface:
Kudos to Microsoft on this one really. There are so many built in functions and options for configuration and set up, as well as tons of places to go when browsing the Live Marketplace in search of demos, music and video that the whole thing could have become a nightmare to navigate. Sony's got the Media Crossbar interface (XMB) and Microsoft's got Blades, neat!
Lots of free demos, Marketplace is awesome:
Remember back in the 8 and 16 bit era's when consoles came with a game included? Now we get playable demo discs (if we're really lucky). There are no playable demo discs included with the 360 package, but if you get the Premium system (and you really ought to, more on that later) then you've got access to a pretty neat library of playable game demos and videos right out of the box, naturally you'll have to have broadband access.
Cons:
You MUST have a hard drive, don't get the Core system if you can help it. A lot of people think Microsoft only launched the Core system in order say they launched at $300, and I agree with them, but stay away from it because it's seriously gimped. Apart from the fact that you don't get a headset, or a wireless controller, the biggest loss here is the hard drive. You need the hard drive to really make the 360 feel worthwhile and fully functional, you'll be missing out on a whole lot otherwise (game demos, videos and all the goodies on XBL). Of course the hard drive costs an extra $100.
No wireless connectivity out of the box:
Probably not a big deal for everyone, but for those of us that don't appreciate the clutter of wires, and who have home networks set up, it's kind of irritating to think that you'll have to drop another $100 for the wireless adapter.
Xbox Live Gold:
I've been a PC gamer as well for while, so the idea of having to pay to play multiplayer games online strikes me as... evil. Granted you get a free month of Xbox Live Gold membership when you first get the console, but if you want to keep playing G.R.A.W, Call of Duty 2 and Battlefield 2 online, you'll have to cough up $50. For anyone keeping score, that's an extra $250 big ones to plonk down on the 360 to get it to match the $600 PS3's SKU in terms of functionality (sans Blu-Ray) or $150 if you get the Premium pack.
It's not a pretty console:
Yeah, this is down to personal preference, but I do think the 360 is not a very pretty console, so I draped a thick rug over it to hide it from view. Just kidding, the design itself is ok, not particularly pretty, but what really kills it is the color, white is just so... blah. I guess Microsoft really wants people to spring for those faceplates don't they? Me, I'm breaking out the paint set for mine.
Minor nitpicks
Marketplace is awesome, but there really ought to be more content on there considering the service has been online for nine months, more videos, more music, and yeah, more demos too.
Microtransactions, I can tell these are going to be the bane of many a gamer's existence.
The Verdict
Ultimately? I'm really happy with the 360, so far the demos have been great fun, awesome graphics and wonderful sound, Sony said the next generation doesn't begin till they say so, but have a romp through Lost Planet and tell me it doesn't. That said, I'm still going to get the PS3, I'm incredibly excited about the console and the games, perhaps even more so now that I have a 360. This way however, I won't have to miss out on games like Gears of War, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Lost Planet, Viva Piñata, Lost Odyssey and Too Human.
If you're a waiting for the PS3, but think you can afford both, I'd suggest not waiting any longer, go out and get a 360 and if you're a 360 gamer who's been wailing on the Sony fans, give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe someday soon we'll all be playing in the same playground. Next stop, PSWii!
I'm sure some of you must now be thinking "PLANT! He never was a PlayStation dude was he!?" Those of you who know me better, well, you know me better, but if there's any real doubt just take a look at my article history and I think you'll see it's leaned heavily toward the PlayStation end of the spectrum in the past, look for things to even out a bit more from here on out.

anyway I think the x360 is not good at all because only about 4-5 games will be great in it's 1-2 gen of games, and anyway ps3 have too much good titles, I know it's not cheap, and I know I'll have to save more money to play on it ( only saved 250$ for my ps3 ). But till the end of the year I'll have it, with a nice tv maybe( also saving money for it )

xD
i would play it. not buy 360 for it, but would play.

The contoller i find abit too fiddly on the 360, i have a problem using the d-pad. I just find it to be unresponsive sometimes and it slides around abit too much. Saying that, i have a 3 sidewinder controllers (pc gamepads made by microsoft) and i have the same problem with these. It just doesnt have that feel the dualshock pad on a ps2 does.
The only other problem i have with the 360 is that there hasn't been that "must have" game yet. i know oblivion is a fine game, so too is project gotham, but i have that for pc and compared to 360 i prefer the pc version, project gotham, while rather stunning, doesnt really grab me and pull me in, and most of the other games are available on other formats, all be it not as pretty as 360, but far cheaper.
Iknow gears of war is coming, and while the video rocked im trying to keep my feet on the ground. I've seen so many games over the years be hyped up like crazy, only for it to fall short. As for Halo 3, again, it doesnt do much for me. For its just another FPS on a console that is already beginning to be littered with them. Although it might be a great online experience, for me, its a tad over-rated, but thats my opinion.
overall im happy with the 360 (even though mine is screwed at the mo) and im rather excited for the PS3 launch and seeing what it really can do.

Shame the 15th hasn't arrived yet. *s******
I used to have a PS1 and a PS2 in my bedroom before, but now I only have a 360. I was waiting for the PS3, until the price mention...the 360 is pretty much exactly the same as the PS3. Similar games, similar amount of power...most Sony fanboys look past this as they're most likely 'afraid of change' and do not wish to try these games out. GRAW is fantastic online. Gears of War looks fantastic, and lets not forget about Fable 2, Forza 2, Lost Planet, GTA IV and Halo 3. If your an RPG fanboy, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are the best RPG's due out for the console at the moment, with a few more on the way in the meantime.
Plus, the 360 is FANTASTIC online! If mine wasn't connected to XBOX Live, I would've got rid of the console within a few days. It's that good. There's many demo's to be downloaded already, XBOX Live Arcade (and the new XBOX Live Arcade Wednesdays announcement which will see new XBLA games coming out every Wednesday) and loads of movie and game trailers and game content, ranging from cars to episodic content.
No, you won't need a HDTV for it, but if you have one already, nice. All the games have been designed with 720p in mind, so you know that your games will look better than those on a SDTV. Although I must say, the games look great on my 28" Widescreen CRT TV.
So...yeah...I too had some funny comments coming from friends who despise of Microsoft when I mentioned I had bought a 360. At least, I see it as a cheaper alternative to the PS3. As it is, the 360 is the next gen console of my choice. I will soon pick up a Wii to sit along side it.

I hated the original xbox (as I was a Playstation and Nintendo fan to be honest) but decided to go for a 360 purely because I had the cash at the UK release date and I knew the PS3 or Revolution (at the time) weren't coming out for ages! I'm actually on my 2nd 360 now coz the 1st one bust lol! To be fair I got my new one in 4 days and that was including a weekend and this one seems fine :) :)
Anyway I'm pretty damn happy with my 360! I love Oblivion, Call of Duty 2, Need For Speed Most Wanted (which I think looks amazing on it... my mate had the cube version and it looked *****e compared to the 360 one) and even Kameo (although it was pretty short) and although there isn't a really a specific title that makes the console a must-buy yet, some of the games that will be coming out look amazing!
I've actually been more swayed to get the Nintendo Wii rather than a PS3 for my next purchase. I actually had an email off Sony about the new PS3 site:
http://eu.playstation.com/ps3/?locale=en_GB
And none of the games on the site really blew me away. If Metal Gear is a release title then ok thats one, but the Wii on the other hand has !!Zelda!!, Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros and Wii Sports just to name afew!
I don't know what's happened with the PS3 but I can't help but feel its already abit over rated. Yea, the 360 has its flaws but I personally think the PS3 has more (the price tag being one of the major ones).

Here are some comments you made that surely fool many into thinking you weren't a Sony fan let alone a fanboy:
"Nintendo just stole the show in the first five minutes!" - Showed your inner love for Nintendo
"Not really, personally I still think the ad smacks of irresponsibilit y, and it's an underhanded and a sneaky attempt to cash in on public sentiment" Most saw nothing wrong with the Sony ad, pure brilliance if you ask me
"various comments on how awesome gears of war is" - I agree =), but no need to rub it into the PS3 fan's face =). kidding
I wouldn't say 360 is worth owning now (I dont play it much lately) but in the future I'm sure my investment will pay off. Gears of War seems to be another Stellar FPS and I'm sure Halo 3 will not disappoint. One other game I am really looking forward too is also Mass Effect. That game seems awesome but bad memories of Bioware's KOTOR and Jade Empire come to mind. Bioware makes great games but I really find them boring. I don't know what it is but I always get their games as they are highly rated but after a couple days with the game I lose interest fast. Might be the lack of story or just boring dialog. I am afraid Mass Effect will be more of the same.
If your a PS3 fan though I wouldn't lose sleep over not getting a 360. The PS3 is seeing some truly awesome FPS shooter experiences. Every single advantage that the Xbox had over the PS2 is going away this generation. Furthermore, I am sucker for good stories and if you're like me than you know Sony exclusives have very moving experiences. ICO, God of War and Final Fantasy come to mind. I'm not saying Xbox games have bad storylines it's just that they don't compare to the quality of the aforementioned games. Perhaps it's the fact that XBOX doesn't get much Japanese support and these guys are the masters of the story telling through awesome visuals (ANIME!).
I am not a Sony fanboy but I sure do love what they have done for gaming. Count me in to be the first in line for a PS3.

i have no doubt that the 360 is a great system (my friend brought his over last Saturday, and i had a blast playing Lost Planet. also, at E3, i loved the hell out of Crackdown; man, that game is fun), but my main concern is longevity. the X Box had only been on the market for roughly 4 years before it's successor was released. in 4 years, i don't want to have to plunk down another $400-$600 for the X Box 362. it's been the main reason why i've been in the Sony camp. just this year, they stopped producing PS1s. after 11 years on the market. and the PS2 looks like it may have close to that longevity (it's already at it's 6th year on the market, and 2007 also houses some promising titles).
i bought an X Box about 2 years ago (roughly when Fable came out), back when i worked at Activision, only to find out about the 360 after my purchase. i could have saved that $200 and bought a 360 instead. of course, then that would bring up the issue of backwords compatibility with the worthwhile games on the 360, and the fact that Microsoft seems to have completely abandoned it's 25 million X Box owners (of which i am one), with little to no support for the platform. during this PS2/PS3 transition, at least the console is still getting games. the X Box is not. personally, it annoys me. it would have been nice to see a few final high profile X Box exclusive titles before the system was retired.
i guess i just don't want to feel abandoned if i purchase the 360, and the next big console from MS comes out 4 years later. i'm sold on Lost Planet, Mass Effect, and Crackdown, but there needs to be more exclusive titles like that before i shell out $400 on the system. the PS3 has already exceeded my 5 title minimum, and *this* year too. there hasn't been a single console i've ever wanted that has had more than one or two launch titles i was eager to get my hands on (even the PS1 and PS2). Exclusive or not, there are 8 to 10 titles coming for the PS3 this year that i'm eager to play. and that's only the beginning. that's what keeps me coming back to Sony after 10 years. anyway, great read.

My hatred of course went away with the release of 360 since a friend of mine was getting it and I wanted to own him online =). I make a decent living so I don't mind paying for it but I sure as hell don't agree on how they treated the Xbox owners and love Sony for their commitment to their platforms.
Well if you think about if MS wins this Gen then they will surely release another Xbox in 3 more years as it will prove that releasing first does help in winning the console war. Xbox fans might want to think about that before bashing PS3.

with that said, i was hella impressed with the 360 at E3 this year, and i enjoyed playing Lost Planet, Condemned, and GRAW last weekend (though i'm picking up condemned for my PC). the only other issue i have with the 360, is that most of the really killer games coming out for it are also available on the PC (Prey, Bioshock, Condemned, GRAW), so i'm just going to buy them for the PC, and not worry about shelling out $400, *plus* the cost of the games. i'd really like there to be some definitive, non shared with PC games for the system. also, it'd be nice if the games didn't all star some angry bald dude with a gun, but that's just my personal preference.
it also doesn't help that i'm not a fan of Halo, and while i enjoy FPSes for the most part, it's not the only genre i play. and i don't like playing video games online (too many people like the fanboys on this site and all over the net). so you see my quandary. i know the 360 is a good system, but coupled with my experiences from last gen, my lack of interest in shooters and online gaming, and you can see why i'm not so enthused by what the 360 offers. i'm still getting one, but not until next year, probably. i'll just play my friends until then (it's funny, he actually won it in a contest he entered five months ago. they contacted him last week and told him he could pick up his 360. who knew contests actually worked? lol).

Anyways, I really liked the article (especially the thick rug joke lmao). It's a nice change from the constant fanboy wars that usually cloud the news around here.

Anyway, about the article, I love my 360, and I thought this article was tripe. Please Chris C., use your above average QJ.net reporter English to write something people actually want to read.
And I don't know if this ("Microtransactio ns, I can tell these are going to be the bane of many a gamer's existence.") is just a thought you wrote, or if you meant it's one of the 360's cons. If the latter, you're crazy. If PS3 online multiplay is free (which I doubt, and if it is, there will be a pay version, and the free version will be filled with intrusive ads), then expect a lot more of these, and maybe at a higher price. They have to make money from something.

I'll be honest, the 360 has some upcoming games that I'm interested in, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are among them, Lost Planet as well. But for right now, the system has nothing for me, I've played Perfect Dark Zero and the game feels like it's trying to run Doom 3 on a PC with Windows 98, it stutters and the camera movements are less than fluid, I would've expected more from Rare back in the N64 days, now I'm not that surprised. Condemned was interesting, but annoying as all hell. It was fun for the first few levels, but then it just got too repetitive with scanning for evidence and would have definitely benefitted from having a map that completed as you progressed, basically showing you what you have covered, but still leaving the unexplored unknown to you, this would have definitely made the game more fun for me. Oblivion I don't give two *****s about, unless it's an online game, I don't play as only one character, Id rather have a party of characters to control with a lengthy plot-driven story that is as engaging as it is enthralling. So glad I rented the game instead of buying it, although I would like my $5 back. As far as racing games go, I yawn. Project Gotham Racing certainly looked nice and played very well, but when you got down to it, it was just another standard racer, nothing special. Need For Speed: Most wanted was probably my favorite racer as far as new racing games go, but it's 360 counterpart seems to only benefit from a higher resolution and not more detail. Also, the fact that none of the cars, with the exception of police vehicles, show body damage was a real quirk for me (aside from windows as well). Beyond
Reply
Beyond that quirk and the laughable storyline, the game was fun and I loved trying to complete all the different missions/objectives. But, the funny thing is, I can get this same enjoyment from the PS2 and Xbox, for a whole $20 less, which seems like a waste for a 360 version, since I own a PS2, Xbox, and GC, might as well get it for one of them, which I ended up doing.
The 360 is really lacking in a game that can make it shine. The Xbox had Halo, but personally I find that the two games that made the Xbox worth having was Ninja Gaiden and Panzer Dragoon Orta. I actually squeezed out more hours on my Xbox version of PSO than I did with Halo and Halo 2 combined (beat both, and played 2 online), and I owned the GC version of that game as well. Halo's popularity mainly stems from that it was the first console FPS with a rather comfortable controller skeem, aside from the black/white buttons, and we all know how much people love FPS games. I remember the countless hours I spent playing Wolfenstein and all of it's clones (PAC and Street Fighter), and then wasting even more on Doom. FPS was something new and fun, and is still quite fun today, but lately has been lacking originality (Like EAs Black, very unoriginal piece of crap). Half-Life was great because it merged a great FPS with some platforming and logical puzzles. Let's not forget the A.I. is probably the best I've seen in any FPS, thus making it a superbly fun and challenging game. Half-Life 2 was pretty much just as good as the first, but the first broke new ground which to me just makes it better. The only FPS to come close to what Half-life achieved was released for the GC, this being Metroid Prime (the first not the second, second was too repetitive). Prime was a great translation of 2d side-scrolling exploration/adventure into full 3d. Like megaman, I find the 2d versions better, but Prime was still great.
Everyone is hoping for the 360s killer app, but from what I saw with Halo 2, im not that thrilled about Halo 3, although still somewhat interested since I would like an ending to that awful cliffhanger in the second. Gears of war looks great, but I'm thinking the next Unreal Tournament for the PS3 is going to blow it away, another set of great shooters by the way, pity it's PC as well.
For me, the real choice of system comes down to track record. Considering I own well over 30 PS2 games, about 20 GC games, and about 7 Xbox games, my clear dependence is on the PS3. Sony has already proven to provide the games that I play and wish to own. Nintendo comes right in second by having some of the best games I've ever played, just not as many as the PS2 (I'll always love Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Metroid, and others). Microsoft has proven to me that they can't satisfy my gaming needs, Ninja Gaiden and Panzer Dragoon Orta are two excellently done games, but shelling out $300 for the system wasn't worth it. Now, if I waited and paid $150 or less, than I would have been much more satisfied, but still not as much as I am with the PS2. Sony has a commendable track record when it comes to media, offering a plethora of games for everyone, not just one group of people. It's impossible to argue against this, the fact that the PS2 is still outselling the 360 is sheer proof of that. I look forward to the future of the Xbox 360, but I'm absolutely ecstatic over what the PS3 has to bring to the table.

right to no.21, who said the 360 was a "code 5" and i could take it back to the shop and get it swapped, i dunno if your from the uk or not but its not how it works in shops over here.i bought mine from the shop i work in (Gamestation) with who you get a 28day guarentee, then you get a further 11month guarentee with microsoft. Only within those 28days can i take it back to the shop and have the product swapped. Its also the same situation for the shop "GAME" and for Currys, of which i worked at too as an area manager.
next, no.31, who said that $10 differenc for one game isnt bad. it aint, if i was just buying that one game. im a hardcore gamer, and although my £27,000 yeraly wage gets me alot of games, i have a life outside of gaming i also need to fund. Oblivion for the 360 costs in the uk £49.99, thats probably around $70-$75 in the US. For the PC, the game in the UK cost £29.99, so about $45, so its actually quite a big difference just for one game. true, a decent pc to play that game the same as a 360 would cost me around £1100 or $1600, but considering i can do far more on a pc than i ever could on a 360, it would be money well spent.
i never said the 360 was a poor console, it is good, but i just feel, along with people i work with, that it came along far too early. it hasnt sold greatly in the stores in the uk, the ps2 still far far oustsells anything else. if you lived in the uk and say the size of the ps2 section compared to others, you'd easily tell what format is the most popular and biggest seller.
hundreds of millions of people own a ps2, most with at least 12-15games, and most of those people would have owned a ps1. At the end of the day, the ps3 can be worse or better than 360, the brand name and overall loyalty will make sure the console sells.
And most hardcore gamers like myself will buy all three, and use one console as a main system (i use ps2 as my main gaming machine, using the 360 for its best exclusive titles and same for ninty gamecube)

It's true because I say so.

I will definatly be getting PS3 too. Not so excited about the games but love the Idea of Bluray HiDef movies on my Hi Def tv and PS3 will be the cheapest way for me to get into Bluray.
Thought the article was very balanced review in all not partisan as some people can be.

And about Live Gold costing $50. How did you come up with $250 to play all those games? I can not say I am a gold member but I do beleive it cost $50 a year and that is it. Where as games like Everquest cost per month for how meany games? the ps3 is sure to charge for online gameing. It does not come free.

like a pc everything is free except for games like everquest, WoW basically any mmo game will charge for play online. thats sony's strategy its nothing like live i dont know were people get that from. like they said they are modeling there service interms of pc's not like MS's gold/silver service.

No wireless connectivity out of the box!!!
Oh my, the Core version is pretty cripple compare to the PS3 Core version! Lol.

Fanboys are stupid, plain and simple, unless you work for a particular brand why in the green hell would you want to only support one brand? Lame!
PS3, Wii and XBOX 360 will offer great titles and exclusives, why the fvck would I want to be a lame ass fvcker and get just one when I can afford buying 3 of each console? Just fvcked up to me, I rather enjoy everything than just the one!
Mario will always kick ass, aswill Crash and the Master Cheif!
For those of you who dislike what I had to say, I've got two words for ya!
SUCK IT!

The Core version is actually fine for those who have no intention of taken their console online anytime soon (yes, they do exist ;)), hence there's little need for a HDD compared to those on XBL. In future, should those same gamers which to go online, or see performance improvements from games which utilise the HDD for caching (such as Oblivion), then they can purchased a 360 HDD.

it annoys me people are so hardrcore about their fave system they come out with "ps3 kiss me ass" or "360 will rule forever" or "ps3 4 life" comments. These people aren't seriously into games, because if they where, they'd look at the good and bad of each console before making any comment. Not to mention its extremely childish.
take no.61 "sony is fony and did nothing for the game industry". Do you actually know anything about the gaming industry? if you did, you'd realise sony dominated the past 10 years of gaming consoles, selling hundreds of millions of consoles across the globe and help create hundreds of jobs along with it. Plus, i don't even think we'd be talking about any console war if it wasn't for sony's domination over the years.
come on, each console has its ups and downs, and true everyone has there fave console. i own a 360, think its good, although i bought the core pack so once i bought the hdd, wireless controller and wireless adapter that amount came to the ps3 premium package in the uk, so i cant complain about the uk price of the ps3. All 3 console bring something to the market (360 has xb live, Wii has the wii remote, ps3 has blu ray and backwards compatability over 2 generations) so they all bring something good, so stop all being so immature and grow up for gods sake

I'm not disputing the fact that you'll need a HDD to get the most out of the 360, but you need to be online to receive most of the benefits. So again, for those gamers not online, the Core package is fine.
As announced this month, the attach rate for XBL on the 360 is an impressive 60%, but that still leaves 40% who have never connected their 360 online, 40% for which the Core package is fine until they decide to go online in future.

unless you get the premium set-up straight off, you going to be spending £60-£80 more than you sould. might not be alot to some people, but thats a good night out for me. Plus the amount i spent to get all that together (roughly £420-£440) it comes to the same price as a ps3 premium system, with which id get a bigger hard drive and blu ray, so its not like the360 for me is any cheaper than the ps3. not to mention id have to fork out when microsoft release a hd-dvd add on.
i know im going to get ear-bashing from ms fans saying about the price with the ps3, but its true. i aint bemoaning the 360, i really like it except wen it went faulty, but it hasn't changed my opinion that its a good console. im just pointing out a)if u don't get premium pack you dont get true performance and value and b) to get it setup to ps3 premium standard, its only gonna cost the same price.

There ARE gamers for which the core package is perfectly fine. We can argue all day about the pros and cons of the core and premium package, but that's a different arguement, as is the cost compared to the PS3.
As it stands, many gamers today are not online and find the cheaper core package to be suitable for their gaming needs. They are not interested in wireless controllers or any other extras, they don't care about online, they just want to be able to put a game into their next-gen console and play. :)

Not that I haven't known it and been bugged by it reading this blog, but coming out with a self-congradulatory article about how you bought an XBox is too much. I wish this site had a new blogger. Maybe one older than 16.

The game line up for the future on the 360 looks great but to be honest, about 80% of the games on the 360 will be out on the PS3 aswell. It will be just like the xbox and PS2 now (most of the games worth playing are on both consoles)! Of course, there's gonna be exclusive titles for each which will be great games, but at the end of the day, the only real differences between the 360 and PS3 are gonna be minor graphical ones (probably less noticable than ones between the PS2 and xbox) and blu ray.
I'm personally glad I got my 360. I'm happy with the games on it for the time being and this way I can save money by buying a hybrid high def DVD player wich will play both formats rather than just one.

This will probably happen more so on these next gen consoles as 3rd party developers are spending more time and money producing the games for them so they will need a higher return back. The best way to do this (of course), is to release their games on both formats.
This might be where the Nintendo Wii has its downfall, as it will probably be harder to create versions of a title on a console that is considerably less powerful than its rivals. I hope this isn't the case though because the Nintendo Wii looks cool
Anyways, I'm going to wait until everything is released first then decide. I'm very tempted by the 360 at the minute though because blu ray doesn't appeal to me much. Especially if it will only play half of my high definition DVD collection

Also when I played the Fight Night round 3 demo, I played when the 360 launched, was just pure fun. I was thinking of perhaps buy a 360, then at the end of next year I will have enough money for both a $600 PS3 and a nice HD TV to play both PS3 and 360 in HD. I don't I'm really bothered, because just like Chris I'm in the Sony camp, but I'm still wondering what the other side is lilke. Perhaps someone who isn't a fanboy can help out?

The fact is, only 1 next gen system is out. There is no way of telling who will win this "war". Its like asking "What is the best kind of Pizza"...Its ALL a matter of opinion.

I have a 360 and got it on launch day. I know you are thinking i have had to return my 360 atleast 2 times. Well sorry to burst your bubble, but my 360 is running great, and I spend countless hours on Oblivion, BF2, GRAW, Prey, Farcry, COD2, and Halo 2.
My Xbox just recently broke though and I have to pay a $80 fee to get it refurbished, but there is no use I have a modded 360 that runs like new.
Oh yeah, and for you guys that are arguing over exclusive titles. Give it up. Each console will have its share of great exclusives. The only reason i bought a Xbox was because of Halo, and the only reason I bought a PS2 was because of God of War. So I would buy a PS3 but the price is a little out of my budget. Besides I would prefer to get a Wii60, because I would be getting two consoles for the price of the PS3.
Blu-ray will not kill Hd-DVD. Instead I believe that it will fail in the long run like UMD. Movie companies are complaining that the UMD's are not selling enough and may stop making them. Just too darn pricey to make all these different formats of entertainment.
The HDD of the 360 is not a must but a convinience. It allows for awesome online and XBL marketplace and arcade. But for the gamers that just want to sit down and play a game and do not care about online or wireless controllers, then the core set is a good choice. It just all depends on what you prefer.
Peace, and keep gaming!

Even though I am a Sony fanboy, I'm still interested in Xbox360. The reason I didn't buy the first Xbox because Halo was perhaps the only thing going for it, and I didn't like it when I played. It reminded me of Quake actually. When I saw the Halo3 trailer, something about its score the way Master Chief was shining, it gave you goose bumps you know?
Also when I played the Fight Night round 3 demo on the 360 when it launched, the game to me was just pure fun. I was thinking of perhaps buying a 360, then at the end of next year I will have enough money for both a $600 PS3 and a nice HD TV to play both PS3 and 360 in HD.

To say the PS3 price is rediculous is... well rediculous. The 360 network adaptor (which is absoluted needed at least for me) will cost you upwards of $100 alone. That just made this $400 console a $500 one, including game a $540-560 one including a year of XBL a $610 one. Need a second controller now? Well you see where I'm going... anyway some people say the PS3 price is absurd but I think that the way Microsoft is selling the 360 is absurd. They've sure made a lot of money on hype alone though. Anyway what I want to say is if the 360 had cheaper periphials (wireless remotes shouldn't cost $50 or $60, network adaptors shouldn't cost $100, adaptors should cost $10-20) I would have bought it in an instant.
Let's get back to why I say it's too early to buy a console though. First off, all the good games for 360, or at least the most anticipated ones, aren't even out yet. Yeah, Halo 3 is coming but who's to say it will even live up to expectation. Some people still think the original Halo is the best just to compare. As for the PS3, it isn't even out yet so we don't know how much a spare controller will even cost (hopefully it's cheap though, I mean it can't even rumble).
All in all, Sony says "Next-gen doesn't begin until we say so" well I say "Next-gen doesn't begin until I say so" that's right, me, the consumer. And I'm willing to wait until I know the best investment.

If you compare this to the PS3 price of £425, I'd say there's still a significant price difference there lol!
If you know where to get the things in the 1st place, you can get them much cheaper! In terms of the PS3 i'll probably be able to pick one up for roughly £380, but still thats £70 more than i've paid for my 360 with the wireless adapter! Thats two extra games for my 360 if not three!!
I do agree this arguement is pointless until the consoles are actually out but cost-wise, the 360 is still the cheaper next gen option and is already out! (i'm not including the Wii because I'm not sure how 'next-gen' its going to be).
