What Lies Under The PS3 Trunk?

the PS3 trunk

The PlayStation 3 has been causing waves eversince it was first introduced last year. And Sony has caused fanboys to even be more excited with their next-gen console when they officially announced it in this year's E3.

Official specs have been revealed but this didn't stop the video gaming public from speculating that there may still be some PS3 features Sony hasn't announced and that more can still be expected from the upcoming console. Sean Nunan was one of them.

Looking at the PS3 and seeing a trunk-like flap (highlighted in red in the image above) at the front of the console, he became curious about a couple of things: Does it open? If yes, how? And what lies beneath? Sean Nunan may be one creative genius because his questions led him to come up with a few mock-ups of what must be underneath that trunk. Here are his speculations...

Removing the flap

Speculation 1: Trunk cover is removed by sliding it from the unit.

Speculation 2: Just like the trunk of a car, the flap is flipped up.

What's underneath it?

Speculation 1: Memory Stick and SD Card slots.

Speculation 2: A card slot for the Sony Online Network where all your account details like balance is stored.

Moving away from the concept of the flap, Sean Nunan threw a few questions about the buttons that can be found in the side bar of the PS3. He writes, "The On/Off and Disk Eject buttons would be feather touch sensitive. So one slight touch, even dropping your finger lightly on it, would activate the button."

I'm pretty sure, other fans have been questioning about the trunk as well; or if not, these ideas from Sean Nunan may surely open up a lot of other bright inputs. If you want to share your own ideas or comment on Sean Nunan's illustrations, share it with other PS3 lovers through the comments section or via the forums.

Hey, maybe we can speculate on the disc drive too! I mean, we already know discs go there, but why not have a creative genius speculate on random BS based on non-existant facts draw some mock-ups?

stop dissing QJ...their just trying to be original with the content that they give us. After all, this is under the rumor category so we wont really know what is in there (if anything) probably until the tokyo game show. QJ did nothing wrong. They are just speculating. I think this article makes you ask questions...which is what its suppost to do.

PS: the best writer at QJ would have to be christopher C. because his articles are original and inventive.

Check ou the official specs. It clearly states that the expensive PS3 will have a cardreader, which was also shown at E3 '05. On the cheaper version, you either woin't be able to open it, or you'll be able to slide a, seperately bought, PS3 cardreader into an empty slot, like the network adapter on the old PS2.

# it has been modifiedGuest 2006-06-16 06:24
instead of the lead/trunk being flipped open, it slides into the ps3 case (in a culvey way) to avoid the hinges breaking, also to retain the sleek look of the ps3 instead of having one part sticking out.

Make sure you make it clear that its not PS1 or PS2 Memory Cards slots. There are for Compact flash cards, SD Memory cards, and Memory Stick Duo. I don't why people don't know this if it was already announced a year ago. Either clueless or forgot with all the hype and new info surrounding the PS3. Probably the former.

# I heard from Sony...Guest 2006-06-16 11:59
I heard directly from Mr. Sony himself that underneath that flap is an area to store your wireless controllers. He told me you can store up to 8 controllers in there using something he called "bluetooth technology," which I believe is some sort teleportation technology using the color blue to teleport something to another universe. But, all I have to say is... WHAT A GREAT IDEA MR. SONY!! YOU ARE THE TRUE GENIUS!!!!

Can you all stop hitting on Me and QJ?

It's my fault I didn't realise you all already knew what was under "the trunk". But can all stop *****ing insulting me?

I dont go on the internet as much as you people, and don't hear about the news.. So why so much "Sean Nunan is dumb" "Sean is not a creative genius".

If I wasnt such a creative genius, then I wouldn't have made those pictures, and have them get their own article.

What do you *****s do with your stupid low-lives?

Sit around the internet waiting for people to make mistakes and insult them as hard as you can because it makes you feel that pinch of self-greatness.

Sean Nunan, I'd stick up for you and say I don't see why any of this is directed at you, but you came off as a real prick in your comment, even proclaming yourself a creative genius. Oh, you can use MS Paint, congratulations you're a genius. I can wipe my own ass, I guess I'm a genius too.

I can see why everybody is annoyed, it's just kind of expected that something this well known would already be acknowledged by atleast somebody on QJ, seeing as it's the best PS3 news site. I don't see how nobody knew such a well known fact, what's next, an article speculating whether PS3 will use HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

# card slots.Guest 2006-06-16 15:37
instead of putting three card slots in there, they could've just put 1 compact flash slot in there and just use card adapters for SD cards and MStickPros.

Under the "trunk" is the slots for the card reader.
