What if: God of War III was an FPS?

Kratos - Image 1

He's bad-ass, he's brutal, he just looks sick from every angle - and he can strike from any angle, too. That's Kratos for you. But if God of War III art director, Ken Feldman, had his way, we'd be looking at the Blades of Chaos from Kratos' eyes. That's right, he wanted God of War III to be an FPS.

Through an interview with CGSociety, Feldman revealed that he brought the idea up to Stig Asmussen, lobbying to drop the third-person hack-and-slash to go for the first person shooter. "Kratos could have some truly badass huge weapons that rip gods to shreds," he said, perhaps forgetting that Kratos already has bad-ass weaponry and has already taken two gods out with them, almost three.

"Unfortunately, he didn't see the genius in the idea," the art director said.

While a God of War-like FPS with lightning bolts and killer bows does sound like fun, I am seriously thankful Stig Asmussen didn't go with the idea. Perhaps for a spin-off, yes. But if it's climbing to Olympus to pwn Zeus, I'm definitely set on seeing Kratos do the honors in third person.

What about you guys?

» oh great

a fps whore......fps are to dam repetitive and over simplify all you do is point and press a button to shoot there are very minimal interactions with outside enviroment...................next thing u know they'll say another dumb thing like lets make dance dance revolution into a FPS

by bmxadan - 2009-10-04 21:12
» dumb ass

how are they gonna make ddr into an fps

by Yuuki_Minoru - 2009-10-04 21:24
» lies.

FPS's have just as much "outside environment interaction" as any third person hack'n'slash game.

Push O to opn crate - > push E to pickup weapon. etc.

The only games that have any more environment interaction are games like resident evil (2), where you need to search through room after room for tiny items of use.

its just a matter of perspective. (if you'll excuse the pun)

» just no

bad idea , every one Agreed that Kratos is the of succes fo god of war ,one of the concept of the game is see kratos smashing peoples and killing and watching combos visual efects , a FPS will kill all that and then preven us from the nice perspective cameras , and new players will no idea about who is kratos character . so i think GOW FPS will eb a waste of money and resource , why not worrking of GOW 3 PSP and iphone , yes last GOW psp was a hit .

I'm glad they didn't do it. I love God of War and I hate first person view in games. Uncharted 2, for example, wouldn't be anywhere near as fun and playable if in first person. Part of the fun is actually seeing the guy you're controlling actually doing all the moves whether rolling out of the way and hiding round the wall for cover, or running off a higher platform and kicking a bad guy in the head.

» NO FPS!!

Slashing in FPS is not same as shooting. If it was FPS he can keep his game - I will just go back and play I and II and PSP version.

No thanks. I like to see Krato's actions as he slays demons. You don't get the characters expressions in fps. Every weapon swing you get to see the invoked rage he is portraying.

» it would be cool if there's a patch months after you beat the game

that does the FPS...just an idea

by girandhistacos - 2009-10-05 09:48
» Hmm...

I agree that GOW should never be turned into an FPS. The reason it did so well is because of the excellent way that Kratos' emotions were expressed through his body movements.

Although, some of the mini-games would have been quite interesting from a first-person perspective. :-D

» opening a crate and picking up a weapon.......boring

where does that help make fps less repetitive and add excitement you don't even see what weapon u pick up looks like or see the awesome act of picking up a weapon........................no wonder on surveys fps rank lowest on the type of games people are looking forward to

You know why you guys hate the idea of GoW 3 being a FPS? because you never played it as a FPS and your comparing its current state to something you havn't even played yet. Its easy to diss a game when its only creation is in your mind, and you get to choose whether you like what you imagined or not. Just my opinion. Sure I like GoW 3 for how it is, but I cant diss a FPS style because I havnt seen or played it, so I have no idea if it would be badass or not.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!! !!

Everyone is saying it would've been a bad game because, like you said, the game's current creation style is in their head's, thus making them believe that an FPS version would suck.

» wouldnt be a bad idea

if you like shanking *****az in killzone 2 with a knife,it would be like that....kewllllll son

by GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-10-05 17:23
» Maybe if....

they made the game compatible with the that wand/sphere controller it would be cool to play. I could see swinging the controller around to make Kratos weapons swing.
