We won't worry about low PS3 games-to-console ratio

Genji - one of the PS3 launch titles

Good news. In a GamesIndustry.biz news item earlier today, Enterbrain said there's been about 88,400 PS3 units sold (although the figure we keep seeing on the Internet is "close to 90,000"). Enterbrain, the publisher of Famitsu, said that the ratio of PS3 games to PS3 consoles sold is 0.98 - that's less than one game per console sold. In other words, some of the people who bought those 88,400 consoles never bought a game.

Now why would you buy a console and not buy any games? Because you're not really planning to hold on to that console. Yep, you're planning on selling your PS3 on eBay.

Enough about Enterbrain, let's do a QJ analysisfication, shall we?
  • You know that a bunch of people bought two games, so if the games-to-consoles ratio is close to 1, that means that for every person who bought 2 games, there were 2 people who were just buying for the gray market, and for every person who bought 3 games, there were 3 people buying for the gray market.
  • This means there's a lot of PS3s in the gray market.
We don't know if this is anything to worry about. As long as you people play it smart and don't get robbed or buy a damaged PS3, then it's just healthy capitalism. The seller makes money and can finally pay rent and college tuition, and the buyer gets a PS3 without having to wait in line. That kind of win-win synergy is what makes the world go round.

And when those PS3s get to where they belong (in the homes of Sony fanboys who will love them and polish their smooth black surfaces and take care of them forever and ever) BOOM! We'll see game sales go up. Because the people that matter, the hot-blooded gamers, will be ready to buy games.

No one cares if it will be sold at the gray market

we just want the ps3 as soon as possible.

So dont talk about ebay ***** if the are crimminels, they are just friendley people whits buy a ps3 for me/you (even sometimes fight for it:P) and sell it to you.

So respect for the Ebay sellers :D

Your math isn't really up to scratch...

If some kid buys 1 ps3 + 2 games it only takes one gray market ps3 to get the ratio to 1, not two.

I'm actually quite amazed the ratio isn't even lower having heard stories of groups of chinese and homeless japanese being paid to que.

yeah, with the chinese stuff and all...

And some could also wait before buying the games, I mean, you can download demos and "arcade games" like flow so you don't "need" games directly at launch, you can wait for the best games, playing demos and arcade games ( if the game you want launch 1-2 weeks after the ps3 ).

You seem to have more ''smarts'' and more savvy knowledge than the vast majority of other sites. I'm not one of those guys who's brainwashed by the media and is told how to think. I know that when I hear Microsoft or Nintendo release a statement sayinng something about Sony, it's no more than corporate trash-talking. I don't buy into most analysts, because everyone truly is a critic, and theirs is nothing more than a guessing game. I think myslef and QJ.net make much better educated guesses.

Thanks

# fix your mathGuest 2006-11-14 09:31
You say the average means that for everyone buying 2 games there are 2 people that dont buy a game. But the average of that would be 2/3 not 1. Instead, for each person buying one game, there is one grey console. For each person buying 3 games there are 2 people buying no games.

That being said, not really a good development if you ask me. But it wont matter in the long run

# PS3 = PS3+PS2+PS1Guest 2006-11-14 20:21
You kind of left out how some are preparing for the future when good PS3 games come out and are just going to use their PS3 for PS2 and PS1 games 'til then.
