Watch: Geohot shows Other OS feature on PS3 FW 3.21 |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Geohot, other os, playstation 3 updates, Sony
Ó
Geohot has released a video demo of his PS3 "custom firmware" (quotation marks are his). The video shows the Other OS feature running on a PS3 with OFW 3.21. If you'll remember, 3.21 removed the feature from the Sony home console.
Here's more info from Geohot himself:
This can be installed without having to open up your PS3, just by restoring a custom generated PUP file, but only from 3.15 or previous. It's possible this CFW will also work on the slim to actually *enable* OtherOS; I'll know when my infectus gets here.
No release date yet, use the proxy hack to play online with 3.15
Thanks to Sonamta and Walo for the tips!

has anyone who already updated tried this out and shot it down? Other than that I still am greatful for Geohot's work if it is indeed legit.

Damn ,GeoHot you're really talented
But you cost the ones who rushed to update -and didn't listen to you- to lose that feature.
And you made it your responsibility to give that feature back -which you really cause it but unintentionally -.
So people could have it back -if they need it- regardless if they liked hacking or against it.
But I'm afraid Sony will respond again.

Look what Geohot wrote in his blog :-
"Note to the people who removed OtherOS, you are potentially turning 100000+ legit users into "hackers." There was a huge(20x) traffic spike to this blog after the announcement of 3.21. If I had ads on this site I guess I'd be thanking you. "

He could have put a piece of sticky tape over the area where the mac address is or blocked it from view, that would make it more beleivable.

Want other O/S - get yourself a computer.
Playstation 3 is all about playing games and watching media.
Stop acting like a bunch of b***chy little girls and get over it!
The only reason to have a custom firmware is to play illegally downloaded games and this is not something I'm interested in (not to mention the time it would take to download a game with 50gig average size).
Reply
...You are ignorant to think that the only people who want CFW would run games illegally. Yes at one point ran games I didn't own on my psp, But I used more homebrew applications rather than run games that I didn't own. Also it was convenient for me to put all my games on my MS than carry them around.
And I would be ignorant like you if i didn't acknowledge that yes there can be pirating going on because of a CFW but if but I'm sure geohot may not allow it unless they brake geohots method of code that he used to make the CFW (or he release's a how to)
...Now back to the ps3, I'm Ecstatic that Geohot did this because I was Ticked when I found out Sony was going to remove the OS feature (which Ive used Yellowdog on my ps3). And when geohot releases the CFW I'm installing it, why because I Paid for it, I encouraged friends to get the ps3, but for what? To have a feature they paid for removed? I don't think so.
GEOhot said himself He doesn't encourage the illegal downloads of video games. Just because it's a CFW does not mean he will allow his Custom fw to run illegal games.
And another thing. With custom FW comes homebrew, with CFW comes more media support, with CFW the person with the source code has the power to do what they want us to do (why do I feel Sony's doing this too).
If being a lil' B*tch is something you want us to stop doing, then take the first step to shut your mouth.
I look forward to your reply!

your speaking about shit you know nothing about, i dought you even own a ps3
we payed for the option so we want to keep it

give us a good example of how yougot that information that an average ps3 is 50gb big.
and no, just because a blu-ray can house up to 50gb of space, it doesnt mean its filled up to the top with data.
http://www.xrel.to/nfo-render.html?nfo=168934&secret=c813501b&font=2&uniq=c90fd3b2
there is a good example for you.
Bioshock 2 for ps3 is around 10gb of space.
and GTA IV for pc is around 14gb of space...
so dont get me wrong, i dont support piracy on the ps3, but its a matter of time till there´s a first "real" custom firmware.
and people most likely get used to share/load the games just like on the xbox360.

i'm sorry but your a total fool. let me give you a few examples considering the psp..
-Bought an display model insignia tv from futureshop, didn't come with a remote; IrShell to the rescue..
-Irshell iplements a WICKED multitasking feature; you can, for example, swap between your game and it's walkthrough online
-I'm always playin Zelda on snes9x (which I do infact own for snes); there exists an emulator for pretty much every discontinued system...
-how about the enhanced web browser for faster browsing? custom radio stations?
-transfer files from one modded psp to another
-you are completely entitled to backup your games; i have 2 8gb sticks with all my PAID FOR GAMES.. while your buying an ugly ass psp travel case for all your junk, i fold the extra stick in a tiny piece of paper.. hell, you can even stream your saved isos off a pc..
i've only covered a fraction of what custom firmware can allow on psp, now consider what the ps3 could be capable of..

Second, since he's such a talented hacker, do you guys the think he can somehow trick the system into updating again into his 3.21 CFW if us slim users are already on 3.21 OFW? Just wondering.
Reply
This can be installed without having to open up your PS3, just by restoring a custom generated PUP file, but only from 3.15 or previous.
So if you've updated already, your SOL. Applies to Slims and Phats.
Reply
You are right in a way already having updated kind of screwed you there needs to be a way to execute code on the PS3 to be able to upload this file or to run a fake updater. He already opened up his PS3 to do this. Others will not be able to without linux at first shot.
Reply
Which is also why he says you have to be on 3.15 or lower right now, otherwise it wont let you update, since it thinks it all ready has the FW installed.
Going into recovery may be possible, but who knows?
This does NOT open the door for pirated games or homebrew. It simply means that he was able to take the code that sony wrote, identify it in a string, and copy/paste it into the new fw where it should be. Then possible toggle a few bits to re-activate it and your done. Enabling homebrew and unsigned code is a totally different monster.

All i gotta say is, I hope it doesn't ruin the market for ps3 games and ps3 in general. Yah, you can shove all that shit in my face about how 360 and wii and psp aren't all that affected, but when you think about it, Alot of people already hate ps3 or hate developing for it because its "hard". yes, more games are coming out, but, if the wrong people start pirating the shit out of the system, it may actually hurt it rather then help it.

by the way, you ever heard of the specifically Emulator-Oriented OtherOS install? PROBABLY not.. don't you have a ds or something you can keep your small mind occupied with?

Or, of course, a new PSP CFW could just come out. And yes I buy my games.

and watch the shit
as far as games, i have no use for old games such as ps1 or ps2 games
because i have a ps3 and i wanna play ps3 games
personaLLy ps1 and ps2 games look kinda shitty after playin the ps3 games and seein the graphics,if i wanna play ps1 or 2 games ill get them off psn or
yea ima say it
ill download them

Aside from that, I have to say to ricochet that I don't think taking it out will stop piracy, i was merely stating i think its funny how people whine about it being gone. I do my fair share of downloading, but I don't do games (pc) anymore. I agree with the general populace in the fact that, yes, I would LOVE to customize the shit out of my ps3, but I'm not gonna risk the chance of CFW on the system just to do it. I can customize the pc all i want and im okay with that.

lazyboi - once the exploit freely available someone (not necessary GEOhot) WILL release iso enabler.
Her0Zer0 - if your PS3 is FAR more powerful than your computer it is YOUR problem. UPGRADE!
Ricochet__ - you paid for console, not for the options.
And to everyone - work on your spelling...

As far as "enough cash"? Please, a new mobo and a quadcore processor are cheaper than the original price of a PS3 if you know where to shop. Quit being lazy and get a job.
Reply
The fact is, there aren't a whole lot of people who can just build there own system.
If your buying a new computer with that kind of power, It's not gonna be < $600

Not everyone can upgrade there PC's I have the money to Upgrade my PC's and i do, but the PS3 is a fun toy Because i can use it as a PC and a gaming machine.
I paid for the console, yes but I paid for the options as well. Not everyone purchased there PS3 as just a gaming machine, Mr. Arrogant
Work on our spelling? You say...
Work on NOT being... Open your mind to the other side of things friend

My first memories of pirating were of being with my dad when he bought a box of 50 double side 5 1/4" floppies for our C64, for 40 pounds.
There were about 6 to 10 games per floppy.
The same with our C128, then the Atari ST, and our first 386.
With consoles, we got the magic carts brought in from china for the Master System, NES, Game Gear, SNES, N64.
I loved those carts which had 1000+ games (although they would only probably have 50 to 100 unique games)
Then, I did the same with my XBOX, and XBOX360. These consoles were the reason I got unlimited internet access. 25 euro a month for an unlimited download-16MBit connection. I averaged about 2 to 3 games a night.
Then as soon as I heard about people looking into cracking the PS3, I bought it.
Now, to get back on topic.
I havent updated my PS3. I use otherOS running reddog and ubuntu (Well... trying to get ubuntu running properly still
I just have one thing to say to Sony.
You guys arent seeing another penny from me.
I have roughly 25 friends who own PS3's and all of them have on average 4 or 5 unique games, the rest of us dont have.
We have all read up on articles to dump our games to external HDD's using otherOS features, and we will be sharing these games between us.
An we've also started downloading the few games already available online.
We all disconnected our consoles before the update even went live, so there isnt even a chance of having "dormant code" in our systems that will suddenly install itself automatically if a certain amount of time passes.
Go GEOHOT. Fly like the wind, man. Liberate us all.
