Wada uncertain about FFXIII for 2008 because of Dragon Quest IX |
Ó
We love it when Square Enix always has something good lined up, but sometimes, healthy libraries may actually hurt. That much becomes apparent after Squeenix president Yoichi Wada stated that he is uncertain about letting the wildly anticipated Sony PlayStation 3 title Final Fantasy XIII loose this 2008 because of Dragon Quest IX's impending release. In an interview with Nikkei Trendy, Wada said he is uncertain about dating Final Fantasy XIII's launch since putting it in line with another high-profile title such as the next numbered Dragon Quest in the same fiscal year can possibly hurt stocks.
From its scheduled 2007 release, Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS was moved to 2008. Just recently, Wada said the handheld RPG is nearly done. On the other hand, rumors of Final Fantasy XIII hitting shelves this year have been debunked not long ago.
Square Enix' RPG for the world, Last Remnant, was also brought up as another upcoming AAA title for both Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 that Square Enix has to introduce to the world along with the bigger names. It is interesting to think that Final Fantasy may be far into development than we think, and is only waiting for a release window that won't collide with other games.
Yoichi Wada went deeper into his other works, such as plans as the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) chairman. The interview with Nikkei Trendy is in Japanese, but if you understand the language, find it by clicking on the via link below.

Comments [refresh]
When I heard all the news over the past couple of years that Square Enix is doing better than they ever imagined financially, I thought it was great news. Now it seems like they're expanding too much and becoming another EA. They've lost sight of their theory of pouring their heart and soul into a Final Fantasy game until there's nothing left to give, and then starting from scratch on the next sequel. If they're going to rush a Final Fantasy game to the shelves so it doesn't conflict with a Dragon Quest release, I guess now they're just in it for the money. I seem to remember the director of the Final Fantasy franchise saying that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be his final game, so he's going to act accordingly and give it all the tricks he's got left up his sleeves so as to feel complete in his legacy. I'm looking more forward to Versus than the plain Final Fantasy XIII.
Summer is the new Xmas for gaming. I hope so the Summer months are always so boring.
and its sad.
oh, btw, F**K DQ.
Why would a DS title and a PS3 title hurt anything? Their sales will shoot through the roof with both and it's not like they're competiting against eachother.
i doubt final fantasy is completed, or very close to completion, or we would have more detail about the game, like we did with final fantasy X/XII, and kingdom hearts. they are probably spreading out release dates because sales would be hurt. looks like they are delaying the game instead of pushing for release so i am happy (quality more important than early release, especially if they are to top 2008 titles, and their previous final fantasy/rpg titles)
Not trying to be rude, but what in the hell are you talking about? The statement never said anything about rushing the Final Fantasy title so that the DW (Dragon Warrior, yes I'm calling it Warrior because of the original :P) IX doesn't conflict. On the Contrary DW IX is also slated for a 2008 release and thus SE is going to think over the release of FF XIII because as it states in the article, releasing two high profile games in the same fiscal year, could hurt stocks.
Its irritating as hell, when people misread something then comment about it, knowing not what they just read and their comment coincide with each other.
Also you do know that Square Enix is made of more than one group, they have about 10-12 groups all working on projects, so each title does have the passion and dedication tied to it. Besides your whole argument is debunked from the get go, if Square Enix was going to rush FF XIII and VS, these games would already be out, as the games production started in 2005.
You EA comparison is based on silly-ness as any company can expand if their employee count continues to rise, beside who cares when they deliver High Quality Games?
In any case, you should really read and understand whats being said in articles you read before you comment, and also you should do research on things before making a general statement that has little to no merit.
Again I'm not trying to be rude, or have any thing against you, but your comment is filled with errors ;).
just release the effing boring kids game called dragon quest now and then ffxiii by summer so we all can be happy.
stupid moron in suits, we know they have separate dev teams. gamers are not stupid just powerless against game exec that choose to decide poorly when to reelase a great product. and yes there are still tons of US hardcore gamers that want to see the great final fantasy, not second rate rpg's like ffxii , blue dragon mass effect and lost oddysey.
and we want it badly because eternal sonata wont hold our emptiness much longer.
sorry for ranting, i ache to play another great japanese rpg for few years now.
If he honestly believes that even a simultaneous release of both FFXIII and DQIX would hurt the sales of either.. someone ought to fire him.
First of all, both games are in completely different markets. One is in the handheld market, in a low age bracket. The other is in the next gen console market in a moderate age bracket. They're both numbered titles in series which have as big a following as any gaming franchise. Anyone who is going to buy them, is going to buy them. Lets face it. There are millions upon millions of DS' out there. I'd say only about 10% of them plan on getting DQIX and I doubt many more are going to be swayed considering the number of titles available.
There are only a fraction the number of PS3s out there.. but I'd say at least 40% of owners plan on buying FFXIII. That and MGS4 are pretty much the only reasons anyone adopted early.
If anything is going to hurt their numbers, it would be releasing both FFXIII and Versus XIII at the same time.. as they're in direct competition with one another.
God this guy is an idiot.. He's missing out on so much revenue for his company because he obviously has no idea about market demand. He has taken absolutely no advantage of digital distribution as a medium of redistribution, yet he makes remake after remake.
In the time that an FFVII remake has been the number 1 fan requested project for SE, they've made an FF3 remake, another FF1 remake, another FF2 remake, an FF Tactics remake and now are almost finished the FF4 remake. The sum of sales of all those titles probably equal the potential sales of a FF7 remake on PS2.
SE just dilutes their products because Wada doesnt know how what he's doing.
Idiot.. FFXIII is more important than Dragon Quest IX.. Do I need to remind you that SQUARESOFT made Final Fantasy and NOT Dragon Quest? Ugh..
Yes, development of Final Fantasy XIII started in 2005. When a video game is built from the ground up, three years is pretty standard. Final Fantasy VII took 3 years, Playstation Home is going to take 3 years, and the original Halo took 3 years. I did read the article fully, but I guess when I read it I jumped a cognitive step and over-analyzed it and thought that maybe forcing the release date closer was a possibility.
Regardless, I still believe that if Square Enix is going to delay (or rush) a game based off of money instead of the quality of the game, then their interests are starting to change for the worse. I realize they are a company and they are trying to make a living, but when a company starts to ask the question, "how can we make the most money" before "how can we make our customers happy" then some problems are about to start. I don't think there is anybody who will be happy that a fully completed game is going to be delayed just so that Square Enix can stuff their pockets a little bit more than they already will.
Your comment still has errors, first of all, how do you know what Square is saying? Money and Customer Satisfaction have been top notch with Square Enix. You are speaking about the business aspect of gaming in which, developers do expect to get paid for their works of art. Customer Satisfaction has not lacked from SE, which makes me question where you are getting at. Yoichi Wada, doesn't make games, he isn't essentially a developer, he's is one of the top excutives for Square Enix, who looks at the business side of the company, whereas you developers like Tetsuya Nomura, are the ones who actually work on the title and put their heart and soul in a game. You are arguing SE's business aspect and SE's Game Developing aspect as if its one, in which is not (Well under technicallity it is if you make up the full SE as a company, however you get my point, at least I hope) Excutives run the business aspect, and Developers tend to making quality games that fans love.
It makes sense not to release high profile titles to close to each other, because like the article said it could hurt stocks, as stock goes up, and thus prices, and if prices go up, then people stop buying, company worth decreases.
