Wada: Final Fantasy XIV will rival WoW

Blizzard's World of Warcraft is hands down the biggest MMO in the world right now, and everybody wants to take on the king of the hill. Square Enix is getting into the ring with Final Fantasy XIV, which according to company president Yoichi Wada is a serious contender.

Asked by Develop if he sees FFXIV as a serious rival to WoW's throne, Wada answered, "yes, but the flipside is that they are a tough competition."

Tough or not, Wada is confident that FFXIV's position as a sequel will be key to its success because nobody has been able to put out a successful MMO and follow it up with an equally successful sequel.

"WoW is a tough competitor, but whether you are talking about EverQuest, Ultima or Lineage there has never been a company that has a continuously successful number one and two MMO," he said.

Final Fantasy XIV is slated for release on PS3 and PC.

One the one hand, MANY MMO devs thought they could rival WoW.

On the other hand, FFXIV is actually the first one I believe it could seriously battle WoW. Of course it will never beat WoW, but it could the reach 1/2 of the userbase or even more of WoW. And it could take the spot of second-most poular MMO of all time.

If its like Final Fantasy 11 Online, then it wont beat WoW, only because the game is far too grindtastic. WoW has more subscribers than any game has ever been able to sell in just copies. Plus WoW has so much content, not to mention another expansion pack on the way that will completely change the pre BC content and get a lot of old players playing again. Another problem with Final Fantasy is they tend to make the games extremely hard to more casual players. WoWs player base is pretty much 85% casual or more.

And its highly unlikely that also releasing on the PS3 will make the game any more popular. PC players will just have to use controllers again like with FFXI. I'm pretty sure the player base will be entirely PS3 players thinking since its a Final Fantasy game, it has to be good. No experience in the previous game.

I think Star Wars: The Old Republic has a better chance at rivaling it. That game looks to be crazy. As for me I can only handle one MMO at a time and I did the 10 day trial of WoW but have waited patiently for nearly 2 years for SWTOR. I'll probably be waiting another 4 until it comes out lol
