Vrignaud has a PS3, blogs about HD problems

HDTVIt was just a while ago when we all agreed that Microsoft will definitely issue statements regarding its rival companies. And now here goes the mighty corporation again. This time, it's Xbox Live Director of Technical Strategy Andre Vrignaud's turn to comment on the apparent problems the PS3 is having with certain HDTV units.

"It appears there's no internal hardware scaler in the PS3. As reported, it appears the PS3 is unable to output a consistent signal to your TV based upon your desired selection," wrote Vrignaud in his Ozymandias blog. The official even claimed that he wanted to play Resistance in 1080i (He has a PS3?).

Unfortunately, the console drops down to a lower-common denominator of 480p, in case the game doesn't support it. Vrignaud continued that he was prompted to quit, go to the dashboard, change the PS3's resolution to 720p and then relaunch the game.

Also, according to Vrignaud, older HDTV doesn't support 720p, just 480i/480p and 1080i. So owners of the said units are forced to play in 480i/p because they are unable to scale the output to 1080i. "This smells of the console being rushed to market, and I'm not holding out any hopes for any significant fix. It's bad, and feels like something Sony would have fixed if possible," said Vrignaud.

Would Microsoft give it a break already? Dissing their opponents all of the time only proves they're afraid of the competition. Well, that's how the Market works, of course you'll be dissing your most powerful rival - Well, it doesn't make me want to help them win the Console War.

Songs working hard to get owned in this fight, this shows the ps3 is a rushed console, even with all the time its had. 360 was also rushed, but they had an excuse(released a year ago!) and they have fixed all their problems by the start of 2006, hopefullly sony can follow suit.

I told you, there is no such thing as a perfect launch, they're gonna ***** up someway or another. Nintendo is the only perfectionist, unfortunately they're working with dated technology so it doesnt even matter.

» i actually noticed it..

I was playing marvel alliance for both the xbox 360 and PS3..

for some odd reason... my PS3 wouldnt look right even after i made all the right selections....

My ps3 just wouldnt get to the same resolution my 360 would for the game.. and it ended up making the 360 look like it had better graphics...

hopefully this is just a bug that can be fixed..

» childish antics

this is a very childish atempt at "my consoles btter than yours na na na na na". Grow up. I have a very nice Westinghouse 37 inch 1080p monitor. And when I change my 360's resolution to 1080p through the dashboard settings guess what I get, A NICE BLACK SCREEN!!! so stop trying to diss sony and fix your own problems. Sony's system supports 1080p out the box through component, VGA or HDMI. Microsoft is only through VGA. Not everyone has VGA inputs on their tv (I do but i use it for my pc). And unfortunately the ps3 does not do scaling, but if your tv does not do 720p then it might be time for an upgrade anyway. And I would honestly recommend people look into the westing house W3 model monitor. IT HAS GOTTEN PERFECT REVIEWS FROM EVERYWHERE, check out newegg.com or amazon.com and it is under $1200. Best kept secret in electronics. I bought it the same day I got my ps3. Thanl me later.

Its a console so it doesnt need a browser. Dude, if I wanted to search the net I would use a PC with a kb and mouse, not my PS3 with a controller. And the PS3 browser isnt much to be bragging about man, its not that great.

I kinda regret buying a PS3 since my TV will not go to 720p and the PS3 doesnt support 1080i. I have a 360 as well and right now its looking a whole lot better than my PS3. I dunno if I wanna sell it on eBay or not yet, but since Im having so many problems with it (choppy start up, controllers motion gets stuck sometimes when im playing, the whole 1080i problem, etc etc). I can definately tell you it wasnt worth the 600 bucks, and ever since I spent the money on it I cant help but feel ripped off. :(

» no actually i was right

hey dude,

i dont know if you do your homework or not but the 360 does not support 1080p through componet. ONLY VGA. this is common knowledge. I have a 1080p television. And yes the ps3 does have a vga adapter. And it gives "TRUE" 1080p through HDMI, VGA and component.my 360 only gives 1080p through vga i already ran the tests. and onmy tv if you hit the info button it tells you what resolution it is running in. for the ps3 the dashboard and a few launch games are in 1080p (NBA 07, marvel, i think ridge racer and another i cant remember the name of). All blu ray movies also run in 1080p (i have 14 of them) for the 360 no games only hd-dvd's run in 1080 p. and i also want you to realize that the signal first runs through usb, then to the system and the "VGA" cable (since it is the only way to get 1080p). hmmm i wonder if that signal loses a little something due to the traveling....

Nintendo does have som DOA Units out there [Wii]

But other than that and some game glitches, yeah, pretty perfect.

At this point, I own a 360, and a Wii, but when I want to play a extremely detailed game, like Gears of War, I go to my 360, if I want to have fun with some sports games or Legend of Zelda, I go to my Wii. Its a pretty good trade off. I got a TV that does Support 720p as well as 1080i and 480i/p. So PS3 would still support my TV.

Sorry dude i don't agree with you! if you feel that the PS3 is a piece of junk, thats only your opinion. I fall in line for this console for 26hrs at SONY METREON SAN FRANCISCO during the launch day and all i can say that its worth my money rather than XBOX 360. I know maybe half of those people in line wants to sell it just to make money out of it...but but but most of them said that they will buy a PS3 around march 07 or maybe a Wii.

Also there's some truth of what you said regarding Internet browsing. If you want to browse online, then PC is the best choice. But if you are already playing your PS3 online let say Resistance or NBA2K7...then you want to check your email or your posting on craigslist then its also convenient to do it in your PS3 rather than disconnecting your DSL and hook it up in your PC again (If you don't have a router just like me).

About the HDTV. Yes we did have a problem using one of the TVs that my friend bought. Because we are trying to use HDMI. It seems that some TVs doesn't accept it. But eventually SONY will fix this using a PATCH. So what we did is we use his SONY TV and played Resistance and NBA2K7 until 4:30AM during Thanksgiving. Even my friend wants to buy my used PS3 hahaha. He said that its way way better than his XBOX 360.

If sony had 4 million systems ready by christmas THEY WOULD ALL SELL OUT!!! so yea 360's may be selling now but this is gonna be a long war so enjoy these few measly months. I own a 360 and a playstation 3 waiting till wii's are available to get one (I waited in line for 2 days for my ps3 no way in hell i would do that for an overclocked gamecube). Sony will take the lead and squash the comp.

XBOX: Halo 3, Mass effect, Crackdown, Blue Dragon, Shadowrun

Wii: Mario 110, smash bros, kirby, yadda yadda yadda

PS3: Metal gear, Killzone, gran turismo, Devil may Cry, Final Fantasy, Jak, Ratchet, Silent Hill 5, Socom, Tekken, Soul Caliber 5, White Knight, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Mercenaries 2 (exclusive I think), Unreal, Warhawk, Virtua Tennis, Virtua fighter 5... just to name a few

not to mention that 1st generation "rushed" ps3 games look comparable to 2nd generation 360 games. Not to mention games will be in "NATIVE RESOLUTION 1080p". With more disk space for bigger games and more info.

A new firmware is out in Japan, but they don't really say what it does. So no it probably did not fix the problem. PS3 does not have a scaler chip in it like XBOX 360.

by Mr. Common Sense - 2006-11-28 07:47
» XBOX will always sell better when PS3 isn't rare anymore

Do you really think people buy a XBOX 360 only because there are not many PS3s or Wiis? PS3 is new and hard to find. That makes people crazy about getting one. Then when they do, there's only a dozen unimpressive games and many will consider selling it. Only 2 or 3 decent exclusive titles will come in the next year, and it's software support will be comparable to the Gamecube. Sales will nosedive shortly after they are easily available. They won't be new or rare anymore, they'll just suck. Playstation 2s are $130, a little more than the cost of 2 games. People like cheap gifts. XBOX 360 is $200 cheaper, and you're getting comparable processing power, just without a soon to be obsolete blu ray movie player.

The Xbox 360 does pass 1080P through component, your TV just cant accept the signal through the component inputs. The signal travelling from USB > system > Cable will have zero loss as it is a digital signal, the only loss occurring will be over the VGA cable itself since it is an analog signal being pushed to the TV.

» Sigh @ All of You

Just because there is an update doesn't mean the 1080i issue has been fixed. I recently heard that Sony is just looking into it and did not propose any solutions yet. Are you saying it was fixed that quickly. I could be proven wrong if someone could provide a link to the official change log for this firmware update.

Also, You really can compare resistance to Gears of War. Do you guys even know what second generation game is???? It's when a same freaking developer releases a second game for a specific console. Gears of War was Epic's first game for the 360 and how can you say its not comparable. Epic Team had just as little experience as Insomniac team with the project. If Epic was to release another game today, then that would be considered second gen game, because they already have experience with the hardware provided. Also, if you guys knew this, but Gears and Resistance were in development for approximately same period of time... For some odd reason, all of you keep thinking that Resistance was a one-nigher project pulled off by Insomniac. Are you kidding me? Making games is harder than you think especially for a more complex system (Cell processor) and an original IP (Extra time for new ideas, storyline, engine, textures, maps, no recycled material) Gears of War was in development for 2 years and so was Resistance. Both are original IPs and no wonder took awhile to make.

If you still disagree with me then look at it this way. PS3 right. Originally announced to be launched in May. Ask yourself, would Resistance launch with the PS3 in May? or Still in November? If you said November then according to you people, all of the sudden it's not a launch title anymore. Maybe even a second gen.

What I'm really trying to get at here is that games cannot be considered second, third, Xth gen in terms of when it was released relative to its console's launch.

So maybe now you guys will use some logic before turning straight to flaming a crap out of people.

My Opinion since everyone is entitled to one so please don't flame it: I'll be dead honest with you about not having a PS3 and I won't cover up that I'm a 360 fanboy. But I played Resistance at my local BestBuy and graphically I found it inferior to Gears of War. Now, let me emphasize it again. This is my OPINION, so please don't argue with me, because someone else might think the exact opposite and I respect that. Just because something taste bad to me, doesn't me its bad...... because someone else might find it delicious.

I hope I got my point across. Oh yea kids, Don't do drugs, stays in school and get good grades :)

That is a unit that was rushed. With another year, Microsoft could have put in a, HD-DVD drive and use it with the games, a HDMI port, a quieter fan, and maybe built-in rechargeable batteries for the controller. And it could have given them a chance to put a hard drive into every unit. They would have dominated if they waited! But no, they wanted to be a year ahead of everyone!

Lets see to get a 360 up to par with PS3 capabilties:

you are aware the xbox360 doesnt have a dedicated upscaler eather?.

its all done on one of the PPC cores in software, as i suspect the ps3 will do to....

"veffremov

VC-1 AP has a feature, where the codec pictures are smaller size then the display size. Similar to non suqre pixels, but works to resize in both directions: vertical and horizontal.

For example you may encode 1920x1080 content as 1280x720, but set the display size to 1920x1080 - the decoder will resize internally to the display size.

The feature is designed for TV Broadcast scenarios, not terribly usefull for offline encoding.

Anyway we have a big perf hit if that feature is used. I hope we can adress this in feature updates."

incase that went over your head, notice how the 'decoder will resize internally' and 'we have a big perf hit if that feature is used' ,now thats because there is not a dedicated hardware scaler chip or even a simple PFGA reprogramable chip to do this re-scaling, sad as it is thats a fact than both platforms messed up on as they think its fine to do it in software to save a few ££.

i always advocate putting in a simple, cheap yet powerful PFGA type chip for this and other currently unthought of

options later, they dont want to to save money, and thats a shame......

» PS3 seems like rushed after another year

Umm that's why the PS2 was sucessful. It was a year ahead of the others. Your comparisons suck as $ony brainwashed you into thinking you need those things. I don't give a s*it about quiet as I like to listen to the surround sound high volume. I would rather buy a stand alone HD-DVD drive when they are cheaper. You don't need a rechargable battery because AAs last months even when used constantly. Then there's the sh*t you made up and acting like you need it to play a badass game. Give it up and don't go down with $ony's ship.

» hold on

so you're telling me, that after the 360 launched, there were nothing but fantastic titles coming out every month? Give it up man, kameo shouldn't of taken too long. And you really think the PS2 was sleek? It had more edges than a picasso painting! Seriously man, you're comparing a console that has been out for acouple weeks to a system that has sold 7 million units worldwide.

» Yes, M$ tells the truth...

Oh yes, M$ tells the truth, that's quite possibly the most outlandish statement I've evern heard. Besides, if you have an older HDTV that can't do 720p, then go buy a 500$ tv that does. It's not that hard people. I'd rather have 1080p with HDMi as opposed to 1080p upscaled w/o hdmi. People who say that the ps3 does less out of the box are blatant fanboys.
