Virtua Tennis 3: The PS3-360 graphics comparison

Now that people have had more time to test and collect games for all the different platforms, GameTrailers has also been able to spend more time watching people play on both. That's why there's yet another graphical comparison test here, and this time, it's for Sega's Virtua Tennis 3 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Like our previous coverage of the Elder Scrolls IV graphical comparison, this quick video also takes a look at the similarities and differences between the two consoles using similar moments of play. In this case, you'll be watching two players taking their rackets to the court in a friendly game of tennis, complete with comparisons of the character models as they wipe the sweat off their foreheads.

Who do you think edges out the other graphics-wise? We're still undecided ourselves. Take a look and let us know if you think the PS3 or XBox 360 wins out this time.

» Slightly darker on 360...

Hard to say if it's due to HDR or just plain overall darker. As far as everything else goes, it seems to be identical...however I don't think this game looks that great in the first place....damn PS3 holding back games...

» Who knows

I cant tell the difference. In motion i imagine unless one has a frame rate issue you wouldnt notice a difference.

Looks the exactly same thing to me, however, the Xbox360 seems to have more realistic shadows and all, but thats about it.

» hard to say

First off I just want to say I own both a x360 and PS3 so im not out to slam one or the other. But from this video it look like the PS3 version doesnt do a lot of close-ups where as the 360 goes all out. It looks to me that the PS3 is trying to cover up bad textures and framerate. But just like every other 360 to PS3 comparison I have to say that the contrast and overall light looks slightly better on the PS3. In the end, the visual display doesnt matter, I'm buying the 360 version because I have a lot more friends on xbox live than I do on PSNetwork. Don't get me wrong, I do still love my PS3!!!! When it comes to multi-platform games with online, i will probably always buy the 360 version, I am not impressed with PSNetwork at all, resistance has way too much lag for me, I dont ever get lag on XBL. It's just that, right now, xbox live provides a much better online experience. I really hope sony pulls through with PSN. I keep looking at my shiny new PS3 and I get excited thinking about whats to come, but then again I also love my 360. I guess I'm just a gamer at heart, not some silly fanboy who throws all his eggs in one basket.

Amazingly close considering each version was developed by a different studio. Sumo developed the 360 version and AM2 developed the PS3 version.

I think I like this game. The demo grew on me and the mini games look really fun.

Unfortunately for PS3 owners no online game play, ouch. What's up with that?

Honestly i don't know how you came to that conclusion from the video. I'm pretty sure the PS3 version is identical. It's a very short video and it only displays about 4 second of proper comparative video at the start with the match intro.

by Seoulfood - 2007-03-23 21:45
» mmm..

Looks pretty much identical, minus the darker lighting in the 360 version. The PS3 version had more defined shadows, but that is not to say it's better or more realistic, but it just seemed to from this video.

Oh Oh! The PS3 uses all caps in "EXHIBITION MATCH" while the 360 doesn't. I think that's the hugest thing.

by poo - 2007-03-23 22:04

For me it's not the graphics thats the big issue. If you want to go on line there is only one option and that's the 360 is the only one. Lord knows why the PS3 doesn't do this, but hey I got both so the 360 gets my vote

» No Difference

Is amusing to see people got to little details to be able to discern wich one is better, the real question is is $200.00 bucks better? I don't think so. For me both version looks identical, but the PS3 version lost some points because the lack of online play in a game that is going to be a blast to play online. I'm going with the 360 version in this one.

Lets get some real facts here, what QJ should do is get some top quality video of both systems running the game(without saying which one is from which version) and then let everybody vote for say One week on which version looks better, at the end of that week QJ could then say which version was running which video and look at the results I bet it would be 50 50.....

by ytryr - 2007-03-24 01:06
» The same but no online for PS3

Exactly the same, and the 360 version monitor was adjusted far to low on brightness or contrast a stupid point to miss when comparing Two systems.

I wouldnt buy this for the PS3 (if I had one) due to there being no online which is a massive difference unless it only costs half the price of the 360 version.

» Can't tell from this video

Other than the different brightness settings, I couldn't tell a single difference in graphical quality between the two. It's very hard to tell fine details apart when two HD video feeds are recorded into such a small video resolution (320x240?). All of the detail that you have is going to get lost. It's like taking a 10 Megapixel camera and comparing it to a 7 Megapixel camera by taking the images from each and scaling them both to a 1 Megapixel image. Of course, your results are going to look virtually identical. A little common sense, please...

PS3's doesn't have online on alot of games because Sony doesn't host the servers for their "free" online. The game makers have to host and maintain their servers (similar to PC games). Microsoft hosts servers for X360 games, that's why every one is online (everyone that it makes sense to be) and that's why we pay for it.

Ps3 is lighter and the easy way you can tell which is better by looking at he hair

At one point it shows them walking away showing there side faces and there hair.

xbox360 has high detail but it looks too much like all one peice on the back and 0.9% plastic

ps3 Also has high detail but if you look close you can almost c each individual strand of hair and the back also has strands so it doesnt look like one peice.

And you cant just look at the vid once and say "o they both look the same" or "o i cant tell" you have to observe it MULTIPLE times to tell the difference even if it is on a low resolutuin

What you guys need to see if this game on a 360 running on a HDTV and on a PS3 running on a HDTV right infront of you so you can see it first hand instead of some crappy compressed video from GameTrailers.

by HM - 2007-03-24 06:09
» Oh please

"Ps3 is lighter and the easy way you can tell which is better by looking at he hair"

Don't be silly. If you have to go to such lengths to spot a difference and, even then, only see it after multiple viewings, then there's not enough to say one is better than the other. They ARE the same.

Yes, her hair looks slightly sharper in the PS3 version, but how much of that is that due to the brightness levels in the video? How much is due to the encoding? How representative is this when the rest looks the same? Are there specific times when certain little details look better on the 360 version?

Whatever it is, these versions are obviously VERY close to eachother, so it's nonsense to declare a winner from a video with less detail than the game itself.

by HM - 2007-03-24 06:15

Who cares about gameplay anyway, as long as a game takes advantage of Blu-ray, then that's all that really matters. *rolleyes*

» im sure

im sure most of you 360 fanboys just want to think the 360 looks just that bit better or they are the same but i think the ps3 wins on this one anyway no online for ps3 is a bummer so i would go for the 360 version because of online... if i had a 360 that is oh and if i liked tennis games...

by Oner001 - 2007-03-24 06:50
» ...

WOW you just don't get what he said do you? No wonder you are a MS fanboy....adjusting the brightness still doesn't take away from the fact that is is not as clean/clear. Go to GameTrailers and watch the HD version of it.the PS3 flows better, sharper, crisper, shadows more realistic and the background isn't blurred as on the 360.

But this is all a moot point since when real games that use the power of the PS3 are made by DEV's then a true comparison can be made. But that is the problem most DEV's only care about how much money is to be made and not the final product....

by Kikoshi - 2007-03-24 07:08
» Um..

From what i've seen alot of people keep saying that they both are Identical, and that Graphics this, motion this, DVD that.

Man right of the top, you can tell that hte Ps3 has more detail and Work than that of the 360, If you look at the people on the back, you can tell they have no Shadow on the 360 version, while on the ps3 they do, and the model rig' and poly's are higher than that of the 360, also if you notice the croud, theres more in the ps3 version than the 360. The Textures of the Net, is also sharper and less blurry than the 360, shall i keep going? Motion is almost as equalp, I havent payed much attencion to it really. But come one, you guys are just talking and crap, but really didnt say what i've said, go watch the HD video in Gametrailers and STFU =)!

Did anyone thougt about the fact that it's the game and not the console? Let's say this game looks better/more realistic on the ps3. Maybe that's because the creators of the game found it easer to work with the ps3 sdk than microsofts 360 sdk and therefore were able to get a little bit more out of the game.

I've tested Blazing Angels on both consoles and I must say the game looks and runs so much better on the xbox360. Does that make the console superior to the ps3? I don't think so...

Even if you think the graphical quality of the game defines whether its a better console or not, isn't it far to early to judge. They yet have to get the most out of it.

» Lowest Common Denominator

Did anyone ever stop to think that whenever a game like this is developed (for multiple game systems) it will be written for the lowest common denominator?

Whether it's the 360 or the PS3, it doesn't matter, they won't take advantage of either systems' special features because it's a lot more difficult. The developer will use textures, models, animation, and other details that BOTH systems will be able to display.

That's the problem with these ports. Too many systems to release on, and it would take too much time to rewrite for each system. Unfortunately, the PS3 ends up getting the shaft on this because it's CPU has the ability to do a lot of things that other ones cannot (or cannot do in realtime.) Because it's special, in many of these multi-system games we just won't see anything special.

And forget about the Wii - if a game is released on the Wii, PS3, and 360, don't expect cutting edge graphics. No offense to any Wii fans, but it's really just an overclocked GameCube with a new controller. For some games, good graphics don't matter. But for others, the better the better.

these comparisons are always here and there.

no matter which version is better it always comes down to sales, and even if 50 percent of total 360 users buy this game and all of the ps3 users buy this, the ps3 is still short due pretty much small market compared to 360. the ps3-360 battle will really start when bought consoles have almost the same number of user base. by next year both maybe near the 15 to 20 million userbase, by then we can see whose dominating and who's flopping.

The PS3 version does not support online play.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id+160542

(Change the plus character to equals in that link to make it work. Not sure why this happens on QJ)

"The only slight downer about VT3 is what we're not getting - there's no online play. For reasons known only to Sega and Sony and the tea lady who eavesdropped in on the meeting, the online play featured in the Xbox 360 version is missing in PS3 Virtua Tennis 3...."

» Hmmm

"Unfortunately, the PS3 ends up getting the shaft on this because it's CPU has the ability to do a lot of things that other ones cannot"

That's really just an excuse. Yes it's true that in most cases, multi-platform games do not push consoles as much as games written for a console from the ground up, however, multi-platform games in previous gens DID show differences between consoles depending on their power. Hence last gen, the XBox version of such games tended to be the best, with better textures, more polygons, better sound, better framerates etc.

The fact that the PS3 and 360 versions of many multi-platform games are so close as to being identical, only gives strength to the arguement that the 360 and PS3 are very similar in terms of power (as stated by devs working on both consoles).

WTF U TALK ***** RESISTANCE HAS NO LAG AT ALL AND YES U DO GET LAG ON XBL BECAUSE I OWN A 360 AND U GET LAG IN RAINBOW SIX VEGAS,GEARS OF WAR, SAINTS ROW,GRAW 2, I CUD CONTINUE BUT WHERE DERS ONLINE DER WILL BE LAG IN SUM MATCHES SO DONT TALK ***** U R NOT UNBIASED
