Video tutorial for running PS2 backups on PS3

PS3Hax has released a tutorial (complete with video) on how to play PS2 ISOs on the PlayStation 3. Note: this process needs a launch PS3 (with the Emotion Engine) for this. Emulation's not gonna cut it.

This has only been reported to work on the Japanese launch consoles, but according to PS3Hax's FAQ, the process is said to work on some NTSC consoles with the Emotion Engine. It doesn't work with PAL models though.

The process also needs Swap Magic 3.6+ or 3.8, and a flash drive (a PSP in USB mode or an external HDD will also work). For the complete set of instructions, visit the source link.

» Confused...

I have a 60 gig launch... they have the emotion engine so that you can play ps2 games, that was the whole point. What does this do that my ps3 can't already do?

by Twenty-Se7en - 2009-01-23 07:00
» nevermind

I didn't realize this was for pirated games. Shame on qj for teaching this *****.

» Japanese game

I hope it can be extended also to PS1 games and PS2 CD games, I really want to play my Japanese (and legally adquired) Library of PS1 PS2 games in my PS3.

PS1 and PS2 sucks connected to a LCD even using component cables.

PS1 PS2 ran through PS3 looks a lot better!!

by GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-01-23 14:27
» Huh?

What's wrong with you? How old are you?

by GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-01-23 14:30
» Good point, both of you

The only thing is the game was sooooooo slow to load.

by GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-01-23 14:34
» Cool!

Yeah I also have a 60GB launch PS3. I love playing my old PS2 games from time to time with the upscale capability!

» NOOOOO!!!

DON't OPEN THE GATES FOR PIRACY ON THE PS3!!

Homebrew is one thing, but this is outright piracy. Ps3 is doing bad enough as it is, without people getting free games from the immense ps2 library instead of ps3 games...

Okay yea, I'll get 20 hypocrites saying "But its for backups!!!", but anyone who has been anywhere near the psp scene knows that "backup" is just a euphemism for "torrent games for free." Seriously, how many people would actually limit themselves to games they own with this exploit?

by desukip - 2009-01-23 18:23
» haha

torrents... hahahah

by Ninkul - 2009-01-23 18:28
» lolwut?

People buy a PS3 to play PS3 games. If someone was that hellbent on pirating PS2 games they'd have bought a PS2, Sony isn't even going to notice this in their profits, i mean really... The people that already have swap magic already have PS2s that can play their "backups". "Normal" people don't know how to format their external hard drive to FAT32 or wouldn't bother going through that much trouble just to play some old PS2 games. If you don't already have the stuff, this is really quite useless to most of you. Its easier to go buy a PS2, component cables, swap magic and then just burn onto dvds.

» 2.60

does this still work on ps3 firmware 2.60, there is some homebrew out there for ps2 like emulators and such so its the next best thing to homebrew on the ps3 and maybe some actual ps3 homebrew in a ps2 disc to boot it up? this might be a key

by xche78x - 2009-01-23 23:23
» maybe hes gone nuts?

anyone who's into ps2 scene will instantly be familiar with this.

those who are not are noobs so stfu hehehe (ive always wanted to say that).

this what they are what they want to accomplish on wii, play backups from an external drive.

playing backups is totally legal if what you backup on your hdd are your own paid game (rented games are not yours).

the slowness will of course be solved once this homebrew goes out of beta dummies.

i have done this on my ps2 and will gladly do it again on my ps3 if only i can buy that hard to find swap magic disc here in japan.

i own a japanese ps3 20gb (upgraded to 250gb), which refuses to load my import us and eu games (mostly rpg's) ps2 games, so this is very useful for ps2 nostalgic reasons. and bcoz i recently gave my old ps2 to my relative on another country.

by StingBlah - 2009-01-24 04:32
» eh?

People buy the ps3 as a home enmtertainment system. Of course, the main form of entertainment is PS3 games, but when faced with the choice of a $60 Ps3 game or 10 $0 PS2 games, I'm pretty sure what the average consumer will choose in these economic times.

And this hack just basically screwed chances of Sony releasing ps2 compatibility on ps3's. They'll never release an emu now that everybody can play the games for free on ps2 enabled ps3's!!

by darknaiyo - 2009-01-24 04:55
» stingblah what are you talking about?

this only works on NTCS with emotion engine .they dont even make those anymore how has this screw anything?

think those ps3 that can use this hack already play ps2 game.

by y2bangali - 2009-01-24 06:43
» lol

yeah it is said to be working on the latest ps3 firmware... and they did release this after the latest firmware came out... i was so close to doing this nd making a video but alas.. i do not have a external hdd... i'll have to borrow one from a friend... i was even gonna make my swapmagic cd... and i wont lie... i will not backup any game just cuz i paid for it... i'm gonna go straight to downloading them... but i dont think i will do this until they release an update to play burned ps2 games on DVD... for now this will only work on jap nd NTSC CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, and CECHD models... this model # can be found behind your ps3.. i have a CECHA... but in time everything will get a lot more easier and updated since it is so limited now... i just hope sony doesnt release a BS firmware like next week just for the heck of it...lol..

by PimpFriedRice - 2009-01-24 08:45
» I'll give it a try

But if Sony release a FW update to fix this, I'll probably update my PS3 for the sake of online multiplayer games. Mainly because I have many and unless you are on the latest firmware, you are restricted to PSN access.

Yea go on, introduce piracy to the PS3, *****ing thiefs. Hope you get arrested like you deserve. Make some damn HOMEBREW not PIRACY ENABLERS.

by ackeejag - 2009-01-24 19:26
» awesome

I have the CECHA model too. I will try this out later. I have a CD burner and a very big external HDD so I can test out some games.

Piracy on the ps3 won't really hurt it. It only works on launch models that they don't make anymore and even if every model had this exploit, it would only mean that people would start buying more ps3 in the hopes of getting free ps2 games. They may pirate old ps2 games, but they might just go out and buy a ps3 game while they are at it.

by PimpFriedRice - 2009-01-24 20:36
» It's not ps3 piracy

It'sonly for PS2 games. People have been pirating them for years now. It's not PS3 games so it won't hurt it's software sales and besides, it's only a fraction of PS3 owners anyway.

by Stayhye - 2009-01-25 07:50
» now only if they can...

make a patch for hdloader to work on the ps3.....it will be kind of the same method of loading external ps2 modules from the memorycard or something, because the ps3, even the bc ones are stripped of these modules

by Uplink - 2009-01-25 20:30
» hmm

60g NTSC US Luanch just tried and failed using 3.8swapmagic goes to luanch and fails

by y2bangali - 2009-01-26 02:41
» lol

wait did u use the original protected swapmagic? it should work only if its the original... if still not, then maybe you should return it and get the 3.6, or just wait for more compatibility..

by StingBlah - 2009-01-26 08:24
» yea that's true as of now

but no doubt the hack will be carried out to all ps3's once they have released the ps2 emu...

by Specht - 2009-01-26 08:54
» ...

Buy me a copy of ICO at EB somewhere and I'll pay you the $5 other than the $50 asked for on eBay... Both ways, the devs don't get any of the purchase.

Or I could use this and enjoy the game without the hassle.

by Specht - 2009-01-26 08:58
» yeah

That would be a good idea, there's even a thing you can download off PSN that allows the EE to access the PS3 HDD like the PS2 HDD.

It'd make use of the extra unused 40GB I've had on my PS3.

by JonnyTanna - 2009-01-27 09:05
» PS2 DVD-ROM

Does this only run games from the USB or can it run from a dvd backup?

by Justingraziano - 2009-01-30 08:08

Sony doesnt make any money off the purchase of a PS3 either, infact for every system sold, they spend money (hoping you buy games and accessories so they get a profit). Does this make it ok to steal a PS3?
