Video: PS3 Eject Button Exploit *Update*

A couple of days ago, Spiker debuted his hack on Sony's PS3 system files, which he accessed under firmware 2.17. While a lot were impressed, there were also a good number of doubting Thomases that milled about the news.

Now, Spiker has uploaded this video on YouTube to silence once and for all those critics that do not have faith in his craft. This here is an actual video of his PS3 Eject Button Exploit. It's a good three minutes long, and it shows every step of the way to the exploit, from the very start to the ultimate finish.

Anyway, we'd much rather let the video do the talking, as we're pretty sure you do, too. So click play and enjoy.

Thanks to Anon for the heads up!

Update:

As we've noticed in our forums, there's a chance that this hack is dubious, either due to the way the video was filmed, or because the PS3's eject button may have been sticky-taped. In either case, we suggest you check out the following forum links below for additional information.

I owe Spiker an apology. I'm not going to lie, the first video left me far from satisfied, i definitely cried 'fake'.

My respect just rose dramatically. This hack has possibilities!

you look at how the first time in the video he presses the ps3 eject buttonwith a short push. yet later on when he does it he rubs his finger starting b4 the button along it. i personal tried this and yes it does not eject if you do what he does in the video. in make a video if you want of it. dont believe me try it yourself. i would believe if he did both of the presses the same. i suppose you cant prove it or disprove it i am just saying my opinion.

# your wrongGW2 2008-03-26 00:02
im not saying it isnt fake, but he holds his finger there long enough for it to eject if button worked. ive tried it. i dont like his camerawork, but he had a place to cut it. right when he puts the camera down, he leaves it there, perfectly still, thats the ideal place to cut his video, i dont know if he's lying or not, but i dont care, unless anything comes from this exploit, it doesnt matter.

# ah i still think his different pressing is dodgyrobbo16 2008-03-26 00:14
why would he press different he would just do it normaly if it wasnt a fake. rubbing your finger across the button only works sometimes so he could have perfected it so it never worked. also putting a small pad over the finger tip stops it from turning on as well somthing like see through film or see through sticky tape does the job. the camera wouldent pick it up at this quality so i still dont believe it untill somthing can be worked from it

I am not sure if this guy is lieing but If I know my montaz and I know it well!! The only way to perform a cut in and out without expensive equipment you will need a still take. When he put the camera on the desk, there I said wow wait a minute why? He didnt explain why he needed to put down the camera...

anyway as you said there's no point into arquing over this unless this exploit can be quantified to something usefull.

this has no possibilities

he clearly ejects a different way when the "hack" is activated.

first time he clearly puts his finger on eject button plush, no movement

second time after all the pissing around, he quickly slides his finger side to side.

put it plush on the eject button and i might believe this.

fake

Do you even own a PS3 Aces In The Palm? You can do that and the disc will still eject. I can swear sometimes my finger can just be really close to the eject button and not touch it and it works. The button is really sensitive, that would have ejected the disc.

# typingfiberwire 2008-03-26 04:17
if you've used the kboot loader, you would know that to go back to the XMB you have to either type "boot-game-os" or hold down the power button when you reset it. since he didn't hold down the power button when he reset it, that means he must have been typing, and when he sets down the camera, you can faintly hear him typing. i say this video is legit.

# i suppose...dtom2444 2008-03-26 05:10
the whole point of an "exploit" is to find a "hole" in the firmware. through this gateway, we can make the ps3 do "whatever" we want, taking into consideration the limitations of the exploit. what im trying to say is, he found a way to get the ps3's eject button to stop working AT WILL! the button obviously works in the beginning of the video, but after he ran his "code" or "program", my apologies Spiker i haven't really been keeping up on your progress, he got the ps3 to do something he wanted. Also:

1) If you own a ps3 at all, you can agree that the eject button is very sensitive. He finger movement were well within the range of sensitivity of the sensors. Without the exploit, it would've opened.

2) The reason why he put the camera down was to type "boot-game-os", the command that takes you from the "otheros" partition to the ps3's XMB.

Great job man! Step in the right direction. Hope to see even more progress in the future!

When he's in OtherOS mode, he's putting sticky tape over the eject button, causing it to beep. You can see the sticky tape if you look closely.

# YupCydonos 2008-03-26 05:22
Good catch! I can see it too, if you jump back and forth in the video you can totally see the outline of the sticky tape in the second half of the video. And you can see that there's nothing there when he zooms in close in the beginning.

Even if it weren't for that, he still hasn't shown us any evidence of these revealed system files he claims to have found.

# It prevents ejectingCydonos 2008-03-26 06:18
The point is that he is using sticky tape to prevent it from ejecting in the second half of the video. His whole premise is that his "hack" is related to the eject button not working.

Reply

# re:huhPopson 2008-03-26 07:17
If you try that on your ps3, it will instantly eject every time. It's heat sensitive, it doesnt matter if you rub your finger like a mad man or hold a (metal) fork and touch the button, it will pick it up. Calling this fake is just being ignorant. Try rubbing your finger on the eject button at all and not have it pick up.

# the metal will eject but stick tape doesnt.robbo16 2008-03-26 07:30
the button is not heat sensitive. the metal on the button uses a conductor like metal a finger or anything else that conducts electricity well. but not plastic it will not eject the drive i have a vid of me showing the thing with sticky tape the drive does not open try it if you dont believe me its very possible

Okay, in previous posts (the first post) i thought this was a without-a-doubt truthful hack. I take that back. After looking at the video again (after someone pointed it out) there is clearly tape on the eject button. So i took some tape out and tried it for myself, and yes, the ps3 eject doesn't work.

So i took it upon myself to make a quick comparison image of the two.

Why do these hacker guys have such crappy TVs. You would get more attention if that was at least 42", running 1080p.

I'm not saying I don't believe the hack, but I need more than "disabling my eject" to start caring.

on the eject button it's right in the open but you need to look quite hard to see it, you can see the part where it's been cut by the tape cutter or picked at before. I had to watch the video twice but it's there, and as others have said, how is this useful?

Seriously, I can stop doing any of this at any time. Nobody but me has the files, I can stop anytime I want if thats what all you want. After I make this next video showing my PS3, and everything else perfectly fine, and if anybody here says "THERE IS TAPE!!!" or "This is totally fake, you can SEE he isnt pressing it..." I will stop my progress and cancel all incoming info on the hack and work on it by myself and lend it to friends if I get anything major. I dont have to be doing this. KEEP THIS ****ING TOPIC OPEN FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. I dont care how many people post in here or anything, keep this damn one open. I am on my PS3 typing this right now, because my computer is down, and my girlfriend broke her ankle. Now leave me alone for awhile, while I get this video done, Jesus..." Spiker

Yes. For one you could actually see whats going on. When someone finally hacks a PS3, and get something worthwhile running on it, I would like to be able to see it, thats all.

Another reason these vids are stupid is because all these hackers have to spend most of their time trying to convince us it's real than showing us what it does. WHo cares if people don't believe you, that should make it fell even better when/if you make something we can use.

I think it's real, not just because of that post above but because if he was lieing he would have left it at the first video and not tried to have prooven it more with another video. But in our defence at Spiker weather it is true or not and you know what I think, we have had alot of fakers so someone new coming along shouldn't come with the intention to be believed straight away but instead with a proof of concept that we can all use.

I'm usually not one of the people who cry fake over these things, but it really does look like the button was taped over. He could easily have done it while the OtherOs was loading and the camera wasn't on the PS3 (Which would also explain why the camera shifted so much to the left during that part) I thought the PS3 button wasn't pressure senstive, but more like those old lamps, where you could touch any metal part on it and the lamp would turn on or off.

Anyways, what is this supposed exploit for? If it's all legit, what good is not being able to press eject?

and getting shocked by it is because the plastic is holding a static charge, you should ground your ps3, because that static could break it.

The touch sensitive control detects a conductor (yes your finger) across it's metal buttons. Any insulator like tape will keep it from turning on. Also I tried the way he presses the button (by quickly sliding it across the button) and it doesn't open! It needs contact for a certain time to respond.

This video is total BS and even if it did work, what use could it have? People that pull this crap are pathetic.

You are wrong. The eject button reacts the instant you come in contact with it. You can even slap it with your finger which is what? .1 or .2 seconds and it will eject.

Slide your finger across that whole bar and the instant you touch the eject symbol, it ejects.

You just got done explaining how you sold your PS3 on eBay for 1800 dollars. Now you have another one to have "tested" this on? More lies.

Wrong again idiot! Gees, how many times are you going make yourself look like a damn fool?

"and getting shocked by it is because the plastic is holding a static charge, you should ground your ps3, because that static could break it."

Yup! Tested by my having discharged myself of electricity before touching it and having it shock me anyway. The facts are, the PS3 should be grounding itself. I can't believe this unit passes testing. I guess they skate by because it's plastic which is bogus since plastic can hold a charge. Anyway, the PS3 is grounded. I could run my own ground wire and tape it to the case but gees, what kind of BS is that? Either way, the static wont harm the PS3 as a whole from my touching the eject button. It's just a minor annoyance.

# WRONG about the grounding of PS3jalaban 2008-03-27 08:46
the console DOES ground itself, if you get static on touching the machine it means the outlet it's plugged in isn't grounded properly... the ground on the PS3 is the middle pin of the three (as ALL those types of plugs are).

The static CAN in fact harm the PS3, but not so that it will be damaged beyond rebooting.

The PS3 is a power-safe machine that complies to all world safety-standards... if it wasn't it would have never been released outside of Japan.

"the console DOES ground itself"

I didn't say it doesn't.

Here, let me repeat myself for you:

"Anyway, the PS3 is grounded."

You're mostly likely referring to my first comment which I left a little open to interpretation. Let me make it more solid for you:

The facts are, the PS3 should be grounding itself AS A WHOLE INCLUDING ALL PORTIONS OF THE CASE. Obviously it's not. Here's a FACT for you of which you'll have to do yourself. Take a multi-meter and ohm out the eject button with the middle GROUND connector in any open plug socket. It's WIDE OPEN! Which means the static has no where to go but straight into me when I touch it.

If you kill yourself doing this then oh well! Tuff!

"it means the outlet it's plugged in isn't grounded properly"

Nope, you're wrong. The outlet is grounded just fine.

"the ground on the PS3 is the middle pin of the three (as ALL those types of plugs are)."

VERY GOOD! But that doesn't mean the case where the eject button is, is touching that pin.

"The static CAN in fact harm the PS3, but not so that it will be damaged beyond rebooting."

No, static at the eject button will NOT harm the PS3. Either way, what the heck does rebooting have to do with anything? Damage is damage, the machine being "rebootable" is besides the point.

"The PS3 is a power-safe machine that complies to all world safety-standards... if it wasn't it would have never been released outside of Japan."

That's a load of BS. You ever hear of a recall? You also are not thinking about any machine that wasn't manufactured correctly. Or a machine where something has gone wrong.

Guess what isoretard, my eject button didn't eject the disc when I did the exact same thing he did. I also made full contact and slid my finger across it.

I actually have 2 60gb PS3 consoles. One is in the sealed box still because I think it will be valuable because of the full PS2 BC. I sold the first Japanese one over a year before I bought one for myself. Then I found an ebay deal and got another for $400 new.

What will isoretard call me a liar on next?
