Video: Crash testing Gran Turismo 5's car damage feature

Apart from looking oh-so-damn good, Gran Turismo 5 will hold the distinction of being the first game in the series to feature visual damage modelling. The question is, how far will Polyphony Digital let us go in damaging our rides in the game?

If you're itching to find out, check out this video taken by the folks from VG Arabia during the Paris Game Festival. The subtitles are in French so the commentary may be lost on non-French speakers, but the visuals do give us an idea of how extensive the damage can be.

Hmmmmmm

I love GT but from what I seen, the car looked like it took a lot of damage and all I seen was an open door and a broken front bumper.......I sure hope they add more damage for the final release.

...

Hate flapping doors and bonnets, it's just annoying. Should make the *****pit view look interesting though.

by Clixt - 2009-09-19 11:21:52
agreed

even with the front end collision with the other car it did not damage the car that much. i still love gt +)

well

its better than it used to be

really

are you serious? since when do cement road barriers weigh 3lbs? I like GT but as far as physics go, I think Forza Motorsport is more realistic. The only thing GT5 really has over FM is graphics and car count... plus only like 200 out of 1000 cars can be damaged... or at least thats what ive heard...

by usjbroly - 2009-09-19 12:37:50
I wonder

does the damage effect gameplay or is it purely cosmetic. im guessing cosmetic.

by KyyubiDX - 2009-09-19 13:27:49
I might be wrong...

...but GT never had visual damage, but the damage was there. Visual damage has only been implemented to please the western audience, so don't expect great milestones there.

people are idiots

you want damage...you get damage....and you still complain. if you want realistic damage get in your car, pick up to 80 mph and crash head on into cross traffic. grand tourismo is about driving, not crashing, if it were realistic than at that speed the car would be sent into oblivion just by slightly touching the barriers. whats the point of making a game with realistic damage when you will never get to finish a race. same as burnout...you crash like crazy and your car can still move

Looks ok to me...

Cant wait to play this.

Agreed

I could not agree with you more.

head on collisions

haha the first thing I thought when I read "GT5 Damage Feature" was,"I hope we get to see some wrong direction, head-on collisions." Which was always the funnest to do when losing in a race, and haha, we got it. Thanks for the vid QJ, and GT5 looks awesome, just like every other GT game!

the damage effect gameplay

in the video they said that the damage affect the car (french subtitle) . And trust me, that's not the style of polyphony to not considering that.

by danielakadanny - 2009-09-19 22:24:45
huh?

What happened with "the real driving simulator" cause it kinda seems that damage happens in real driving

wow

WOw WOW WOw , the phisics simply amazing , the lights are wonderful , the shaders are true and real , i dont understand why people comare GT5 to the plastic models of FORZA , just this video should tel you GT5 is epic game and it will be for a whille , yes a whille at less 5 years . Guys this game is too realistic and not only the game but the GFX there are a hiden efect who give that realistic blure and heat also the reflections on cars is amazing , ok lets just wait . for your info i have bouth XBOX360 and PS3 and i love them but a good game is a good game , tnx poly for the great GAME , you know poly some companies will hate you bcz they have to work hard now to sell a race game . you gived them enough time and what they give as hundreds of crap race games - Need for speed underground : lol - GRID : lol - Dirt 2 : a assisted driving even in hard core too lame and a big lighing bug - Need for ... shift : Simulation ?!!!!!!!!!!!! :D "now if only a new WRC come out "

by jgr9 - 2009-09-19 23:54:35
:-/

And he just keeps driving. That makes sense. :-/ I hope that isn't the full extent of the damage.

by vizard00 - 2009-09-20 00:13:55
ok

do you need the GRID damage or the DRIFT one , This is a game so we need to finish the race , also GT5 hasnt the rewind time of shi**t . but i think damages will be considered by the system but not fully visible

@ idiot danielakadanny

GT is for car enthusiast the joy of riding cars that you dream of driving and to race em, not a derby crash game. This is not twisted metal, I guess you can't drive without crashing when your in the freeway or can't beat a single GT game for you to make such a lame remark.

by danielakadanny - 2009-09-20 09:44:34
@ ____

you are right it is about driving but simulator means:a device that simulates specific conditions,in which this case it is simulating driving and we both know from experience there are retarted jackasses on the freeway which cause crashes so its bound to happen or are you so "good" that you can go throughout the entire game without one single crash...yeah probably not so then the damage will happen and will make the game more life-like

by damonous - 2009-09-20 11:10:32
Forza?

You're kidding, right? Forza is a pure arcadey experience (at least, Forza2 sure felt that way). Even in GT5 Prologue, you can play something like Daytona 500 and every tiny movement of the wheel affects your speed and position around the oval. RARELY does a game ever get that pinpoint-accurate in racing simulation. ....Forza! Give me a break. With or without damage-modeling, GT5 is in a different league of racing game altogether.

by HIDEO KOJIMA - 2009-09-20 11:16:59
@ danielakadanny

"retarted" ? lol Anyways, adding to ___ post, the car damage feature is cosmetic only, meaning that it will not effect how the car performs in the game.

by danielakadanny - 2009-09-20 11:47:38
you serious?

I thought that Razgoull translated the subtitles in which it said that damage does affect gameplay...but since I don't speak french I can't say if its right or not...well we will just have to wait till this game comes out...and soon hopefully

by jgr9 - 2009-09-20 12:33:39
:P

Actually, I want something closer the Burnout damage :P or something that is actually realistic. It's a simulator for God's sake!

by vizard00 - 2009-09-20 23:07:22
burnout !?

ok , im not your teacher , and i think that it shard to explain GT concept and style , try to finish GT 1 and 2 then 3 to understand GT and why its the 1st race game ever . lol burnout !?
