Vid: Mystery of the blinking PS3

Popular Mechanics notes that while they were using their new PS3 on their Westinghouse HDTV, they discovered an irritating technological problem that caused the sound to cut out and their screen to blink on and off when they launch certain games.

They soon found out that they weren't the only ones going through the same problem. The video embed above details the their investigation into the blinking mystery.

It's good to note in advance though, that the bug is more of a problem with the TV than the PS3. It was revealed that the blinking had something to do with the timing of the HDCP authentication process. Westinghouse informs that users experiencing the problem may well need an update to the firmware to correct the timing during HDCP authentication.

Westinghouse clarifies that the PS3 expects a response that the TV is copy-protection ready in a certain amount of time and the response wasnÂ’t coming quickly enough. They advise that customers should call their tech support and Westinghouse should schedule an in-home firmware upgrade. Popular Mechanics reports that Westinghouse promises it wonÂ’t cost you a penny.

Amusingly, Popular Mechanics found a solution to the problem that is very low tech and doesn't involve technicians going to your place. It involves popping-in and out of cables. Click play on the embed (from popmechshow) and see for yourself.

Ive never seen my PS3 blink lol. And there are no kinks and flaws with the system. The guy above me is just too damn poor to afford one lol. PS3 is rock solid and just by playing Fight Night and Madden you can really see the added detail to the PS3 versions. just a better machine that needs time. Atleast the PS3 doesnt OVERHEAT AND BREAK like all the first 3million Xbox 360s did lmao.

I'm sure that TV doesn't have any problems with over HD equipment, only the PS3. And considering that product existed before the PS3 came out and supported all media products HD or not.

Sony needs to recognize these problems and work on fixes, and not blame push blame (Like Vietone). They need to support all TV configurations without problem. TV manufactures only need to comply with industry standards, not the PS3. It's sony job to ensure their product supports all TV's that comply with industry standards.

This problem only seems to effect a small percentage, but if I was having this problem I would be extremely pissed off. I'm sure it's not a terribly hard fix for sony, but it wont get fixed if they deny there product is at fault like Vietone is doing.

The problem IS the PS3 because it has that copy protection BS with the HDMI output.

I'm not sure what problems the 360 has now, and MS even extended the warranty to a full year for peace of mind. If you are going to try to bring up launch problems with the 360 again you need to be smacked.

Ive never even heard of them (although im from the UK), they must be to you what Logik TV's are to us, very cheap and poorly made.

And as for all the PS3 haters, it isnt a PS3 problem, otherwise Westonhouse wouldt release a firmware upgrade for THEIR OWN hardware.

Seriously, i doubt some of you haters are even fans of gaming the way you always slag off the PS3.

I have seen this problem on many hdtv sets... with many blu ray, hd dvd, and hd tv tuners (satalite) ... they usually happen on no name brands... odd that Westinghouse makes tv's... it just looks so different than a refrigerator... : P

You people seem to know nothing... if you're here to fight then whatever, if you want to know something then here it is.

TV makers aren't using specific guidelines lately. Why do you think there are a million and one articles on how to buy a HDTV. It's because tv manufacturers are giving less and less attention to working on a quality product than if it works 100%. This is a common problem with people purchasing so-called HDTVs and EDTVs, etc. There are many manufacturers that had products that cost a lot of money before the HDMI interface became the defacto standard of the HD generation. Many of these companies simply revised the hardware to allow for a HDMI input. Because procaution wasn't taken - many of these tvs didn't recieve proper firmware updates and cannot handle certain forms of interfacing - the newer the HD device is, the more likely that you will see this when facing off against older hd tvs, or rushed tvs.

The people that buy this brand are generally older in age because it was a very trusted household appliance manufacturer for years and years. Brand loyalty sets in after owning a product of good quality for years without hassle. And now, many people own crap products because companies like this have degraded over the years and are now producing products simply because people will buy them. My TV does this too and I called the company and they told me that they didn't have an update for the HDCP and that I should call a service store to come out and fix it.

They asked if I had another HDMI cable to try and I told them I already tried and still doesn't work. They asked if I had another TV to try it on and I told them yes I did and it worked fine. So the TV I have isn't sycning with the PS3 Correctly when it comes to the HDCP firmware.

Yea we cant afford one. I own a $3000 true HD TV (Sony SXRD, one of sonys good products), but i cant afford a $600 component. Use your head, to any one with a profesional job, $600 is peanuts. You know how people get rich, by not just jumping in and buying something the manufactuer says is good. But doing your own research. Presently the PS3 offers nothing to owner of the 360, nothing. Every game (Except resistance) is lackluster, and worse than its counter part on the 360. FFS they cant even run Motorstorm in split screen, becasue of hardware limitations. (Said by the developer) So do your own research like the majority of us, instead of being one of Sonys flock. Buying on namesake, is moronic.

Get some component cable for a partial fix, well at least you can use your PS3 until your TVs firmware is upgraded. And i agree with the other posters. Westing house TVs are garbage, thats were the problem lies. LCD Projection or DLP if you want to game. LCD pannels and plasma just dont cut it yet.

HDMI is digital. Component is analogue.

except it did this EVERYWHERE, this was on a 42" toshiba DLP, too fix it i just pressed the menu button on the TV remote when it was displaying video. and voila! its fixed. Lucky for me, thats not my HDTV i have a Grand Wega

so the Sony to Sony connection may be the reason for the guarenteed working. Its a problem with low end TV's that use cheap Hardware kiddies so stop blaming the system.
