Street Fighter IV game design - Image 1

You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Well this is new. David Sirlin, one of the chief designers of Street Fighter II HD, attacked Street Fighter IV (PS3, 360) in a very harsh review that could put Simon Cowell to shame.

He gives a blow-by-blow account of what's wrong with the game, starting with ranked matches, how the game deals with lag, the button config screen... the list goes on. You'll have to follow the source link for the full thing, but here's an excerpt:

When I read about the 100/100 scores, I see again and again how "simple and elegant" the game is. Two super meters, a 3-tier focus attack system, and all the complications above seem to fly in the face of that.

Even more though, I hear how "casual friendly" it is. This is deeply mysterious and I'm not sure why this so often claimed. Not every game has to be casual friendly, so it would seem more honest to just explain how casual unfriendly all these things are.

Qcf x 2 +PPP all the time, extra button presses to throw, extra button presses to roman cancel, and many, many extremely difficult link combos work in concert to create that impenetrable wall of execution between you and the actual game (the interaction between you and your opponent). I wish we could get rid of all this stuff and focus more on the gameplay itself.

Not to be butthead, Sirlin, but the thing your describing that you want to happen is supposed to be Street Fighter II HD. SFIV is supposed to be the next generation of the franchise. But yeah, SFIV is more difficult to get into than previous Street Fighter games, especially if you're a casual gamer. What do you guys think?

Street Fighter IV is sweet , as well as Street fighter HD Remix. But I probably wont be playing remix any time soon or ever.

What a moron. I've got both SFIV and HD Remix and my girlfriend is a newcomer to the series and finds SFIV far, far easier to get into and more satisfying to play while allowing lots of potential for a player to develop their skills. And I agree with her. I find it near impossible to go back to HD Remix after playing SFIV. Personally I'm not keen on the 'remixed' graphics either. They're drawn ok but somehow it makes the animation of the original look far choppier than it was and flat and I found myself changing the options to have the original pixel sprites back. In fact I felt ripped off buying HD Remix. It was certainly not worth the £11.99 it costs on Europe's PSN store whereas I feel I've more than got my £27.99 I paid for SFIV. Least when I played SFIV I didn't feel like I'd paid a chunk of money for a game I already own many times on cartridges and CD's too.

» guys an idiot

i find street fighter 4 much better as it is pretty balanced apart from some characters, however if your good im sure you can pull off the win.

Street fighter 2 hd remix once your cornered against the wall your screwed. I also found pulling off combos in 4 are much easier but i still need to get a fighter pad so doing semi and quarter circles are smoother on a 360 degree dpad.

ps. i think capcom should make another street fighter for more enthusiasts that is a combination of street fighter alpha 3 and and 3rd strike.

with the mix of parrying, character selection, and more combos (level 1, 2, 3), and different super levels a-ism x-ism v-ism. i know some consider it complicated but their fairly simple and they make the game more exciting, more challenging, and gives more options for epic battles.

im loving street fighter 4 still tho

Personally, I think street fighter games are kinda slow...but not like MK slow....That's just retardedly slow...(Lets Take Turns punching each other.....)

He should shut up tho about the casual thing tho...SF4 is 10x more casual than SF2...

I'd Rather be playing Marvel Vs. Capcom anyway (1, not 2...2 is unbalanced and overrated.)

That's fun.

» I agree somewhat

I do like SFIV much more than the HD Remix... but I still dig remix Worth the $9.99 I paid for it just as SFIV was worth the $59.99 I paid for that.

» far from an idiot...

the first and second paragraphs are dead on accurate.

the game is not simple, and it's not casual friendly... however these are not negative aspects. he was merely stating it's not what some people are calling it.

let's see a noob hop online and see how long they enjoy getting their ass handed to them because they don't have a good grasp of the complex nature of everything from ultra combos to focus moves...

he loses me on the last paragraph however. what does he mean by "gameplay" if not how the game is played?

» It was worth it

For $10 i got street fighter 2 hd a couple of months ago so it was great to get caught up on my street fighter 2 skills cause i hear street fighter 4 plays alot like street fighter 2 so it was worth it

» haha yeh

» Not as easy as I'd have liked

My girl can't get into it. She keeps putting MK vs DC back in. I was hoping she would dig this title, but I like it for the nostalgia. Guess I'll be playing while she's at work.

I'm thinking all games should just start including an extremely easy casual version. Maybe an option that goes beyond just how stupid the AI is. Wii may be on to something with the Everyone thing, just make it available as an option for more intensive games.

» Don't worry about it

She's just jealous that she can't afford a PS3

He didn't even do it cleverly.

» Aww how cute Solid Snicker

You're showing you're a fanboy/girl colors with that ever so noticeable PS3 sucks words.

You should probably just log off the site and let the adults here who know about games talk. Cause you're just embarrassing yourself here. ;)

» They are both great games

Maybe they should team up together and make V.
