Valve: We didn't put our best foot forward on the PS3

orange_boxHere's something definitely new. Valve is owning up to their missteps on the PS3, saying that they didn't put their "best foot forward" on the console with the release of The Orange Box.

More important than the admission though is the revelation that they are working at making thigs better on the system.

Chet Faliszke, Valve writer, gives us the lowdown:

"We thought that the Orange Box didn't put our best foot forward with the PS3 community. W don't want to do something like that again on the PS3. We want to give PS3 owners the best possible experience," he said.

"Some of that will come from us learning and getting better. Before we can go onto the PS3 again, we want to make sure we're better at developing for it."

That's definitely good to hear.

If your CEO didn't have some irrational phobia of PS3 and diets, you'd have done a better job?

Didnt help that he's an ex-microsoft employee

why is every1 dissing the ps3? of course the more it's dissed the more it'll suck, not that it sucks right now, but come on, i think everyone who makes games are just too lazy to fill up th BD space, i wonder if in the future it'll be the XBOX720 with the next FFXX w/10 DVD's just because they dont want to give as much time for the new disc format that won the format wars, everyone has to step up sometime and have the balls to learn to evolve. . . sorry! i like writing a lot ^_^

its nothing to do with the Disc format, its the complex design of the cell processor that they are having trouble with. and the fact that PS3 uses OPEN GL and all valve games are DirectX based

The one soul reason i dont like directx is because
as far as im aware its a microsoft baby
and microsoft keeps it exclusive

opengl i think has now won, think about every console (not sure about xbox) is compatible with opengl even the iphone .....#

But yeah so happy valve is working on the ps3, loved the orange box, although there were some technical problems

Be Brill to get some other valve game on, but i cant see the likes of L4D coming to it, microsoft is going to make that exclusive

Yeah, DirectX is microsoft/windows....that is why everything that is not microsoft/windows uses openGL.

That's rather the point.

Building a simple game on a complicated system is of course going to be a LOT easier than building a full-blown, complicated game. Especially if you are porting that game from something else.

# sony's own wordsGuest 2010-02-28 03:06
if you troll through QJ there's a statment from sony stating that coding for the ps3 is hard. which they will work on to make it easier when it's time for the playstation4 to come out.

if you think of it, anybody can really learn how to program for the 360
just get the XNA club license, and bob's your uncle you got tools for the 360 and pc to make games.

if they make the PlayStation 4's tech unlike the PlayStation 3's then there won't be any BC and to this day I still miss PlayStation 2 BC on the PlayStation 3. I bet that's one of the reasons sony didn't sell their Playtation 3 as well in the beginning

It certainly annoys me. I skipped the PS2 as I am "one of those" who came from SEGA consoles to Xbox.

I own a PS2 now (repaired one that got thrown out) but I hate playing it because it looks poor on my HDTV. If my PS3 played PS2 games I might actually go out and buy them. Although granted, they would probably be second-hand so Sony wouldn't make any money from it.

I wonder if the rumour of some PS2 ports coming out on PS3 is true? Could be tempting.

I guess its just for the lack of effort on Valve's part. Look at Quantic Dream and what was accomplished with Heavy Rain. Suck on that Valve, ya just being too lazy.

Valve has said some sad shit in the past(i guess it's cause BG and M$ live up their asses), but credit where it's due - this may have not been a great game for PS3, but they do make a couple of good games (for FPS's).

I've never been a big fan of FPS (they were innovative until about Quake/UT - it's been the SSDD since). I "tried out" Portal on my PC - i think it is one of the most innovative games i have played. Never played HL2/TF2 in any great capacity, tried DODs once or twice, even had a crack at CSS once. The only other game that interests me is the Left 4 Dead games - Port that shit to PS3, i'd look at buying it, oh and a Full game with the portal gun would be awesome.

Fuck Valve. They'll never see a dime of my money. These idiots trash talked the PS3 numerous times in interviews and now that they see sales picking up they want a piece of the action. Fuck out of here.

Did they run over your cat or something?

Seriously, how can you take it so personal that they trash talked PS3. Almost all developers trash talked PS3 as they were pissed at Sony for making such a poor development kit.

Its not like Sony deserves anyones worship. Does Playstation Home do half of what they promised? What the hell happened to The Getaway? Does Heavy Rain look half as good as the technical demo? The answer is a big NO!

So please grow up. You wouldn't do any different if you were them. Why would any businesses throw money at a console that costs a lot more to develop for BEFORE its proved to be popular enough to make a profit on. That is all Valve has done, they waited as they saw Xbox 360 as a cheaper and far more profitable system at the time.

I remember people coming back with the Orange Box to return on the PS3, and they were hard to shift since they were a tad glitchy. If this statement leads to a fixed version online, and gameplay wise, I'd say it's long overdue.

Credit to Valve for owning up to their errors, but they do seem to take their time with everything other than Left 4 Dead these days and Team Fortress 2. Sure they're good games, but there are others Valve.

Valve, you make great games, please improve your own reliability though. Your one of the few company's I like anymore.

I hate to admit it, but I still play TF on my PS3 from time to time. I know it's the worst version, but my PC won't run it. I'd probably nut myself if I saw all the updates brought out for it. It's good to see them eating a little crow now that sales are up and rising. I normally don't like FPS all too much, but TF is some fun stuff.

i wonder if the ps4 is going to be like the dreamcast, a great console but failed for a random reason, dreamcast had bad advertising, ps4 might just have only sony people making games for the people who don't take time to study the Playstation. otherwise the PS might just corrupt on itself for lazy cry babies ^_^

yup. fat lazy sack's of crap. i wouldnt touch a valve game even if it was free. they have ignored the platform for years then think they can come in at the end and that will make up for the neglect? no, i dont think so.
keep your crappy games for the crappy platforms. we will stick with our current developers who have taken the time to learn how to use the system.

Konami, Naughty Dog, Square Enix, and Quantic Dreams are like the only ones who care about the PS3 and it's wonders, unlike xbox360, the only thing that keeps it alive is Halo and biased games like MW1&2 and idiots who don't give the ps3 a chance

Fact: Less Hackers on PS3, since PS3 has stayed unhacked up to this day, plus Sony isn't like microsoft, idk, but i don think that they'd make your console useless! take that RROD and douches!!!!! i still like XBOX though, just not bias, just some exclusives, i wonder when or if ever the companies combine to make one super, awesome, chocolate coated, sexy, seducing, pile. . . of . . . God console??? anyone think that'll ever happen? Halo on PS3? or . . . nothing on XBOX? idk, rather have blu-ray, or the new thing (the Red-Ray Disc!!!!!!!!)oo oh, while XBox stays with DVD lololololololol olol!

I find it incredible distasteful people bash valve the company due to fat man Gabe Newell. I know he's an incredible tool, rightfully so, but Valve are arguably the best PC developers right now and possibly all time.

Them admitting this and saying it is very mature honest. While I hate Gabe, I respect Valve's comment about this. It's very apparent the Company as a whole don't share the same views and opinions as Gabe on the console, and considering the sales are increasing alot and there being shortages, it's the best time to develop on the PS3. The demand is increasing and ND, GG and SMS has proven that makes incredible games like Uncharted, Killzone 2 and God of War 3 isn't hard, just takes some time and hardwork.

...will they show their gratitude towards the PS3 users and give us an apology by patching the game, or is it all just public relations-BS? I would love to play more of Team Fortress 2 if only they fixed all the bugs and added just A FEW more maps. Seriously, just ONE single CTF map??

I think it's P.R. bull. They want to calm down the PS3 user that were upset by the "Orange Box" bugs, and the comments of Gave Newell. I really hope they redeem themselves and do some good stuff on the PS3.
