Running video game emulators on the Playstation 3 is a difficult proposition for some users. Well, if you're really adamant about doing so, then you might want to check out a guide that was posted on the PS3-Hacks website which explains how to run an emulator on your PS3 (with Linux) using Swap Magic.

The step-by-step guide is available in English (which is near the bottom of the source article) and should get you running emulators on your PS3 in no time. So if you want to check it out for yourself, follow our source link below. Before you go though, here's a pair of videos which show the emulators running on the PlayStation 3.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

That's awesome!

But is the PS3 powerful enough to play Nintendo games? Hehehe

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past here I come!!!

» It is, but

This isn't the PS3 hardware playing the games.

This is the old PS2 disc Swap Magic with it's elf loader running PS2 homebizzle.

So the backwards compatibility chips are playing this.

Although it's still an idea, it's a shame that this will only work on the ooooooooooooool d 20/60gb models

» 80GB

It will work on the 80s as well. The 40 is the only one that won't work with this.

That's nice but seems like alot to go thru just to play some old S/NES game..

» No Linux required but...

...this requires a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 to run this PS2 homebrew.

If Sony releases technical documents of the hypervisor (and possibly even enable RSX access), we could see an unofficial OtherOS devkit, so homebrew/emulators can be programmed to run without running Linux.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Why do you assume that everyone who owns a PS3 also owns a PC?

Mind, the odds are really high.

Just run the emulators in Yellow Dog Linux... Works for ALL PS3s everytime.

by Specht - 2008-07-04 06:03
» Why not just use Linux?

It doesn't take long to setup and it runs perfect. SNES and Sega Genesis anyway, haven't tried any others.

Though I don't know how well an N64 emulator would work on the PS2 hardware... The RSX is blocked on Linux... Now, if I can get a Dreamcast emulator running, that's something I'd try.
