UPnP Media Servers that might work with the PS3

The architecture that Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is based upon allows peer-to-peer networking of PC units, networked appliances, and even some wireless devices. Sony's PlayStation 3 clearly fits into that list but it's kind of curious why people haven't tried it yet on the console.

Online site PS3mods has compiled a list of UPnP media servers for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and Python. They mentioned that among the ones listed below, they were only able to test Nero MediaHome. It was working alright but it wasn't a perfect fit.

Feel free to try the media servers below yourselves. If the PS3 is compatible with any of these, the media servers will appear on the XMB right away, doing away with accessing the web browser first.
  • Allegro Media Server (Mac OSX, Windows - commercial)
  • Cidero Internet Radio Server (Java - open source)
  • Cyberlink Digital Home Enabler Kit (Windows - commercial)
  • CyberMediaGate - (C++ - open source)
  • UPnP servers that might work with PS3 - Image 1EyeConnect - (Mac OSX - commercial)
  • Fuppes (Windows, Linux, port to NAS has been reported - open source)
  • Geexbox (Linux - open source)
  • GMediaServer (Linux - open source)
  • MediaTomb (Linux, port to NAS has been reported - open source)
  • Musimatch Jukebox (Windows - commercial)
  • MythTV (Linux - open source)
  • Nero MediaHome (Windows - commercial)
  • On2Share (Windows - commercial)
  • PyMeds (Python - open source)
  • Rhapsody (Mac, Windows - commercial)
  • SimpleCenter (Java Based - commercial)
  • TVersity (Windows - closed source, currently free)
  • TwonkyVision (Linux, Windows, NAS - commercial)
  • uShare (Linux, NAS - open source)
  • Windows Media Connect (Windows - closed source, currently free)

Well TVersity just released a new patch for the PS3's 1.8 update and I think I'll go with them. They work pretty good with my 360 so I'll use them for my PS3

» Yup

I agree. TVersity works great after that patch. Video, music and pictures stream flawlessly.

» Nothing is going to work very well

because the PS3 has s**t for media support. Sony has no excuse not to support all the open formats like Vorbis (for audio) and Xvid for video. Instead they center around MP4 which is a container format that even WMP doesn't like out of box. Transcoding on the fly is now and will forever be a crappy solution until you are able to fast forward and move around in the media.

My PS3 DLNA boner went away after spending the entire weekend trying to find a good solution. None of them work very well and the PS3's support is very lack luster. If you don't wanna bang your head against the wall for a few days wait for a Media PC on woot or something and hook that up to your TV instead and save yourself the headache.

TVersity crashed multiple times just trying to scan for my entire library. Nero MediaServer wasn't much better. WMP11 works fine but supports no transcoding and won't serve MP4 files since it can't parse their metadata.

I eventually said screw it and went back to transcoding everything to MP4 and using a usb thumb drive.

I've been using Nero MediaHome since v1.8 was released...no problems...it streams everything very well. I think I may try TVersity though just to see if it's a little less bulky than Nero.

» Nero Media Home

In my opinion Nero Media Home work very good... It completely satisfies the purpose and now transferring video to my PS3 turned out to be easier.

by andreo - 2007-05-30 10:06
» I tried nero

I tried Nero since it would transcode on the fly. I was trying to avoid converting videos from Divx to something else. Well, it would stream the video, but the audio was way way off. I'm talking by 2 minutes or so. The file was fine when played on the computer, but the audio would start coming through a few minutes before the video.

Other then that... Nero worked great :/

» Yo, buy both X360 & PS3 consoles [End of the Console War Debate]

So many losers online say their console (either PS3 or X360) is better. No, the PS3 hardware is better only because it’s newer; however, the deciding factor which will choose the winner of this console war is the content (games). Both consoles have numerous blockbuster (must-buy, ground-breaking, triple-A, console-selling) exclusive games. That’s why you must buy both consoles.

[PS3 Exclusives]

- Dynasty Gundam Musou (garbage): hack n slash

- Lair (garbage): aerial hack & slash

- Heavenly Sword (garbage): 20% God of War rip-off + 80% hack n slash

- Crysis like FPS from Crytek (garbage): best graphics + extremely boring gameplay

- Getaway (garbage): GTA rip-off

- The Eye of Judgment (garbage): another card game

- PS3 Home (garbage): don’t waste even 5 minutes on this

- Folklore (so-so): super-mesmerizing graphics

- SingStar (so-so)

- SOCOM Confrontation (so-so): SOCOM is the most sold shooter among all PS2 shooters. SOCOM is the most played online game on the PS2 + worse graphics than GRAW 1

- Resistance 2 (confirmed, so-so): lackluster Resistance 1’s sequel

- Haze (timed PS3 exclusive) (so-so): crappy run n gun just like Halo 3

- Heavy Rain (best): cinema quality game

- Warhawk (best): fantastic gameplay

- Ratchet & Clank (best): mind blowing graphics & character animation

- Uncharted-Drake's Fortune (best): Indiana Jones + top graphics & animation

- MotorStorm 2 (confirmed, best): dominating

- God of War 3 (confirmed, best): dominating

- Metal Gear Solid 4 (best): dominating

- Eight Days (best)

- Jak and Daxter (best): dominating

- White Knight Story (best)

- WarDevil (best): cinema quality game

- Pain (best): this arcade game is sadistic

- Silent Hill 5 (best): legendary horror

- Monster Hunter 3 (best): the PSP version is the most sold PSP game in Japan

Did your mom smoke crack or something? The topic is PS3 UPnP media service. Yes the both system are geat (I have both) This is not the proper time or place for your posting. Save it for the next flame war posting.

» i have one question

what does UPnP do? i orriganaly had it off and my nat type was 3 but then i turned it on and now its 2 is that all it does or does it do more?

by bopoo - 2007-05-31 00:45
» ???

So you have really playtested the final version of all of those games? Or are you just talking crap as you cant actually tell what a game is like before it is released except by reviews, and there are none for most of those games.

by SWANN - 2007-05-31 01:02
» Your a funny guy!!!

You opinions about the exclusives coming out doesn't coincide with my opinions. Half of the games you called "Garbage" are not that, + you have even played them because either they haven't been released as of yet, or simply put you haven't played them. Correction: "Home" IS NOT a game. It's a virtual world for PS3 owners. I'm glad you won't spend 5 minutes there that means I won't have to hear your *****ing and moaning about the product. So bottom line: Your opinions about this subject don't account for S@#t!!!

by Quixand - 2007-05-31 01:29
» yup

i second pimbong's question...

anybody?

» Sony

I really wish Sony would help tell people how to use this media streaming instead of just putting it out there and letting people figure it out for themselves. I was clueless about how how to even use this thing because it never found my computer and now I read you need these extra tools to make it work (XP). More help would be appreciated if you want people to use this Sony.

» got it

Ok, I got it to work now. Thanks a bunch.

by Mentality - 2007-06-01 10:24
» erm...

The problem I found with the majority I used was that all my DIVX movies wouldnt play apart from with TwonkyVision but that was just arsey to use to say the least as it's a webpage configuration and I'd much prefer a nice little application. So I'm sticking with Nero Home because I payed for Nero so I may as well get some extra use out of it.
