Logging on to your net connected PlayStation 3 unit will most likely have notified you that your system requires an update. Well, that's true, because Sony has just released a new firmware version for your trusty CELL supercomputer and it's labelled as Firmware 1.70.Now we've searched high and low for an official listing on the PlayStation Network online portal for the U.S., Japan, Europe and Australia, yet the list of the 1.70 update could not be found. But looking at the TV screen, the update is there, and it was screaming "Download me!"
So it's about high time to drop that 1.60 oldie and upgrade to the newer firmware, because newer is cooler. The new stuff that some users have reported to stem from the 1.70 update:
- Enabled psONE downloaded games to play on the PS3
- Enabled psONE game saves to be used on the PSP
- Enabled rumble function on accessories for PS1 and PS2

UPDATE: Going over the U.S. PlayStation site, we found out that the System Software Update section has already been updated and that PS3 firmware 1.70 is already available for download. Here are some info we found about PS3 FW 1.70:
- A feature has been added for playing downloaded PlayStation format software.
- A feature has been added for downloading PlayStation format software from PLAYSTATIONStore and then playing the downloaded software on the PS3 system. Some titles can be played on both PS3 and PSP systems.
- Downloadable PlayStation format software compatible with the PS3 system will be available soon from PLAYSTATIONStore.
- You can now use the force feedback function of some accessories for use with PlayStation 2 format software. For details, check back to this page later.
- You can now use saved data from PlayStation format software on both PS3™ and PSP systems.

Will probably take a hack on the PS3 firmware unfortunately. There is definitely some testing to be done here and there, but this doesn't seem very possible based on how it all works.
However I wonder if PS2 controllers will work with a USB accessory now? Anyone test this yet?

all I am saying is that Xbox 360's interface kick aspirin...!!! I mean almost a year after the release and I still cannot play music while I listen to my games. I thought I was going to buy a more powerful machine, but I was sadly mistaken. I have been a loyal sony fan and just hope that these pointless updates will come to a stop and when they do update that it will be more of the monumental status rather than psone gamesaves. big whoop... the only thing that I believe will save the game is more utilization of the sixaxis because more games are becoming multi-platformed... finally sony's trump cards in ratchet and metal gear will have to sell really well to overcome the wii. the only 2 friggin ps1 games i bought from the playstation store were crash bandicoot and jetmoto. did anybody else notice that they arent there anymore? why did they get taken out. i wanna try the ps1 game thing.

and yeah its already been almost a year. its getting pretty close to november eh? its already april! +.+" the only game where i want custom soundtracks right now is motorstorm but if i am playing shooting games, the music(mostly my own) can throw me off, i dont know why but it just does.

If you have a USB to PS2 adaptor your PS2 controller will work now with your PS1 and PS2 games!! Unfortunatly Guitar Hero controller is still not usable, since the button configuration is mess up, still you can now play DDR and PIU for sure.
I've always been able to play PS1 games on my PS3, and also my PS2 games. WOW. Imagine that!

Can anyone else confirm this. Also where did you get the adapter from. I didn't think there is one made for ps3 yet. Or did you use one made for the PC?
Here is what I heard...
1.)from what I have heard PS1 downloads will work on the ps3 but for some reason it isn't corrected yet, but hopefully by tomorrow when the new psn rolls out.
2.) Saves from these ps1 downloads onto the ps3 will be able to be sent to the psp, no big whoop, because it saves it under the same file type.
3.)Guitar Hero I does indeed work, but no whammy bar support, however GHII is a totally different story and doesnt work at all.
4.)Vibration support for ps1 and ps2 accesories.

I've yet to be able to view jpegs saved on several different usb flash drives. Digital camera cards with digital camera images on them work fine, but i'd like photoshop-saved jpegs on usb drives to work. Fix that Sony. If I want to play PS1 games I'll just stick them in my PS2.

yes u can hook a ps2 controller up to the ps3 with a usb accessory. I tested it with my smartjoy adapter for the pc and it worked. No PS button though.
When are they gonna roll out the update that will let me scale the games onto my 1080i only TV? That's what I really need...

Well I can confirm GT4 now works on PAL consoles, just with a couple minor glitches but nothing too bad.

What is POPS games?
this is something you would only do on driving games and gta games alike. nevertheless its useless. why do you wanna change the music of a game? the game companies work so hard for great music on their games and you would just like to turn it off? do you wanna watch a movie but the music is your mp3 of choice, i think not? anyways what you are wishing for is not sony's problem, call on the game developers to make their games to support use of mp3 on the ps3 hard drive. and the xbox 360 interface is utterly frustrating to use and quite confusing.

Have you tried highlighting the drive in the photo menu and pushing the triangle button? I notice sometimes just hitting the X button wont show things on the memory unless you go into a sub menu with triangle first.
You'll probably find that you're 1080i TV is really downscaling to 720p. The resolution would be 1366x768, look it up in the tech specs for your TV.
If your TV supports 1080i, it'll support 1080p.
try actually downloading the ps1 game to your psp then in the xmb, copy it from your psp

I think it would be good if sony were to make it, so that when you recieve a message in game you can just click the PS button and veiw your message instead of quiting the whole game.
you have some bad info there buddy, just because your tv supports 1080i doesn't mean it's downscaling 720p, it's upscaling 720p to 1080i.
also, if your tv supports 1080i DOES NOT mean it supports 1080p.... it's the other way around. if it supports 1080p, then it supports 1080i.
all im saying is thats a horrible way to open a paragraph. a year after the release of what? i would hardly call the updates pointless anyone with a psp can tell you they come out often just part of the game:( finally its not about saving ps1 saves its about playing ps1 iso

The PS3 has a problem with 1080i only TVs that's been pretty well documented since launch. If the game (which are most at this point) only supports 720p, the system won't scale it up to 1080i, and neither can my TV. I've been stuck playing my games at 480p (and I can verify this by bringing up the display info on my TV).

Yep, no decent exclusives yet. All you can do is get $60 year old ports of XBOX 360 games that now cost $30. The PS3 versions aren't even improved in most cases.

Great. We can now get a PS1 game (through PSN) and play it on both the PSP and the PS3 and move the game-save back and fourth to which ever machine you are currently playing it on. Great move! Wonderful feature!
Now, if they could get working on being able to not only read PS2 memory cards... I would like to be able to continue my PS2 game whether I'm in the living room playing on the 31" HDTV screen with the PS3, or in the bedroom on the 13" SDTV screen with my PS2. (For times like when the wife wants to watch a movie I have no interest in...)

Thought I'd post an update, following on from the 1.70 euro PS3 firmware. To be honest I'm amazed at how much better the BC is now. It auto detects my USB adapter for the PS2 controller, rumble works. And all but two of my games now work!!
Only these two won't load:-
1) Metal Gear Solid 2
2) Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
With all these previously dead titles now loading:-

These ones all still work, though possibly with less glitches now:-

I have a few issues that I was wondering if anyone else has. My USB GT Steering wheel works with GTHD, but isn't detected in GT3 or was it GT4 with the PS2 emulation.
Also the on the Guitar Hero 2 controller it looks like some of the coloured buttons are mixed up with Green and Red not working at all. Could this be because I got the adapter from Japan, or is there a general problem?

speaking of the usb adapter for ps2 controllers, well b4 the update everytime you load a ps2 game you have to hit the home button to activate the controller, so that being said, the ps2 controller doesn't have a home button so theres no chance to activate the controller, i know the controller worked with the xmb but thats about it, now with the update you dont have to press the home button to activate the controller, so i really dont know what you talking about.
what happened to the avi support, xmb access during games for playing music or quickly replying a friends message???!

I was hoping for more media like features like zooming in on photos and more slideshow effects even though some of the slideshows are pretty good already. PS1/PS2 controllers now work with PS1/PS2 games using any USB adaptor - no need to push the PS button.
More games work on the PAL console - Pro Evo works (get in!), both Guitar Heroes work (without guitar controllers, although GH1 is sort of playable) they're the only 2 i've noticed.
There's a littlebit of writing under the demos that tell you the last time you played them - I don't think that used to be there anyway.
Before updating it lagged ever 20 seconds and the match wasn't playable. After updating it lags for about 30 seconds at the start of your first match and from then on it's fine. Online works as well no. After you've had a couple of matches it's perfect.
Well it is for me anyway, you never know it might be different for other people.

Yeh, since I updated to 1.70 pro evo 6 is pretty much perfect for me too.
