*Update* US 1.50 firmware update fixes display annoyances

Why does it look like the recycle sign?! - Image 1In our previous post on the Japanese release of PS3 FW1.5, Robert Kelly asked, "What good is playing PS2 and PS1 games if they look as blurry and fuzzy as news reel footage from 1945? " Well Robert, Sony took the hint, so guess what the US 1.50 firmware update has?

Word from Kotaku is the latest PS3 firmware update has finally fixed the the graphical problems present when playing backwards-compatible PS1 and PS2 games. They've noted that Okami and MGS3 are working perfectly, and with the appropriate pretty pictures too, so we're hoping the their graphically intensive games will finally get the respect they deserve.

Of course, there's still no changelog, so you'll just have to update your PS3s and then check to see if your older games work perfectly on your new-gen console. For now, we'll leave you with one question: Why does the System Update icon look like the sign for recycling?

UPDATE:

PSP767 commented on the post with a changelog for the update. Thank you for that! Funny how it doesn't mention that graphical issue thing though, but oh well. Here's the changelog:
  • User can now set an image/photo (off a mem stick etc) for their user id
  • Edy support added (for payment via card reader)
  • 'operation sound' added to sound settings
  • 'delete backup data' added to backup utilities subsetting
  • WEP128, WPA-PSK (TKIP), WPA-PSK(AES) can now utilize AOSS
  • Can now remember your login password without using automatic login
  • Korean keyboard setting can be used

UPDATE #2:

Just to make sure we dotted all our i's and crossed all our t's, here is Sony's official changelog for their PS3 Update version 1.5.
  • Users
    • You can now select an image to use as the User icon from [Photo].
  • Settings

  • If you have already set up for AOSS using an earlier version of the system software, you must perform AOSS setup again to use the security methods listed above.
  • When [Automatic] is selected, the security method to be used is automatically set. AOSS is a trademark of Buffalo, Inc.
  • Friends

that protection on digital video connections is in almost every A/V product with digital video output or input... Most recievers that have HDMI state if the device doesnt have that protection then it wont work with this reciever. Go out and acually buy a REAL display instead of using your half ass LCD moniter.

HDCP is between the PS3 and the Display.

Sony cant do anything in the firmware to change it. The PS3 has HDCP because in the future, all displays will have to support it. Its starting with 1080p right now but eventually HDCP, or a version of it, will be on every resolution.

Too bad your computer monitor wont be able to playback 1080p content unless you hack it. Right now, the only way to get 1080p from a Blu-ray Drive or HD DVD drive is to have a HDCP compatible drive, which they all are. A HDCP compatible Video card and barely anyone has it and only the newest 8 series Nvidia and New ATi cards are HDCP compatible. Last is a HDCP display.

So if you cant get you display to work now. Then in the future, if you expect to be able to buy a Blu-ray Drive or HD DVD drive and pop in a movie and play it back easily in 1080p, then your mistaken if you dont have HDCP.

It bricked my PS3 and $ony denies that is possible and is making me pay to send it back. I found a way to illegally modify my blu ray drive firmware to play backups, but I didn't tell them that. Now the motherf*ckers are making me pay for their mistake!

# The XBOX 360 has a nice, convienent VGA connection with no copy protection BSGuest 2007-01-24 06:09
Wasn't it nice of $ony to protect their profits with their BS copy protection while some PS3 owners get screwed and have to buy a new TV? Make sure you buy a $ony TV. You'll also need a new $ony surround sound system to take advantage of overhyped "lossless" audio supported by one game. Hell why not buy a PSP, lots of blu ray movies, and PS3 games even though they suck!

Buying a PS3 goes against common sense and turns you into a $ony puppet.

# youre prob should not be HDCPGuest 2007-01-24 09:51
unless you have a 24 inch LCD monitor, which you prob dont because.. then, more than likely it should have HDCP built in. if you have less than 1900x1200 resolution then you must have 1680x1050 if you do then you should be watching your blurays and games at 720p because that will give you be most accurate picture pixel per pixel.

******alot of ppl are confused******

if you connect your ps3 via HDMI-DVI to your monitor more than likely it wont work. that is because the standard definition of the ps3 is 480i .something your monitor does not support. what you have to do is connect the ps3 HDMI-DVI then when the ps3 is off hold the power button on until you hear a beep ( 3-4 seconds after you hold the button). then turn on your monitor. this enables the auto resolution feature thus allowing you to play on your lcd.

i have 2 20'' inch lcds one is not HDCP and one is.the difference between 1080p and 720p on a LCD that is not native 1900x1200 its not that big. point is that just because your monitor is not HDCP enable it doesnt mean you cant play at all . all it means is that it wont play at 1080p.

# brick my assGuest 2007-01-24 10:25
That was pretty good, PS3 lover. If people were modifying their PS3s, they could brick just as easily. It's pretty stupid to expect Microsoft to test its updates with ILLEGAL DVD firmware, well because it's illegal.

Didn't Ken "Dumbass" Kutaragi compare the cell to the internet, saying

"If processors of high performance and wide bandwidth like the Cell were linked together without sufficient security, a worldwide system crash could occur with one attack."?

The PS3 is vulnerable.

The PSP's security was hacked within months.

I just finish doing my test with FFX and FFtactic (ps1 game). It's a lot better now. They put a filter or something like that (you can see it side by side with a ps2 (PiP screen)). They knew that they have to do it fast and the big reason was God of war 2! If it run well on ps3 then ps3 owner will buy it too.

I have a computer LCD monitor connected to my PS3 and works perfectly @ 720p. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 940bw. I bought a cable that converts HDMI to DVI on www.monoprice.com, for a very cheap price and a great quality cable. I love HD.

# *ANOTHER THING UPDATED*Guest 2007-01-24 12:46
Another thing I found to be updated in v1.5 was when using my bluetooth headset during Resistance:FoM gameplay:

Disconnecting and connecting the headset while in-game always use to cause the controller to disconnect/freeze for a second or so...now it doesn't. There is no freezing while connecting the headset in-game or even at the gameOS at all - which is a great thing.

I tried a few more and still looked like *****. Does me using a HDMI cable have something to do with it? I see all these reports of it working but I cant understand why it doesnt for me.

Do the ps1 and 2 games run in progressive scan now?? I have to use the HD Xploder device in my ps2 in order to play most games in 480p. It blows the PS3s video output out of the water. But I didn't update yet so I wonder if that is why? Can anyone confirm if it's in progressive?
