**UPDATE** PlayStation 3 firmware 2.0 goes live - with video demonstration |
Rejoice, PlayStation 3 owners! Sony has just announced the release of PS3 Firmware 2.0 on November 8 (Thursday, today for some regions). So what's in store for us in this latest firmware update? In a nutshell, Remote Start, Information Board, and other feature upgrades.
Here's what Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network Operations at SCEA, had to say:
PlayStation 3 is constantly evolving and this latest firmware is a great example of how we can make existing features such as Remote Play even more user-friendly. We're also delivering entirely new offerings that increase our touchpoints with consumers through the new Information Board. These types of updates show the value of PS3 goes beyond your initial purchase, and we're continuing to evaluate new technology upgrades and consumer interests to develop future firmware updates throughout PS3's lifecycle.
Remote Start will enable users to turn their PS3s on and off with their PlayStation Portables. As long as you're in the middle of a Wi-Fi hotspot, you can turn your Sony PS3 on or off for any number of reasons, like access music, pictures, and watch videos.
The Information Board which will allow users to view the latest PS3 news on their XMB. It will serve as a quick and easy way of announcing new releases, new downloadable content, and updates, among other things. According to a press release, users will be able to scroll through news and read the full story via the Network Category on the XMB or through web links that can be opened with the web browser. The said feature can be turned on or off by visiting the Information Board icon under the Network category.
Other upgraded features include custom themes, music and photo playlists, and a PlayStation Network category on the XMB. You can now personalize your XMB by changing your icons and the wallpaper with a theme. Themes will be available via the PlayStation Store, but users will also be able to make their own themes and share with other users.
Another good upgrade is the playlists for music and pictures. Now you can organize your music and create slideshows for your pictures. Lastly, the addition of the PlayStation Network icon on the XMB will allow for easy access to the PlayStation Store and Account Management settings.
According to a report from SCEE, the updated Remote Play (and most probably Remote Start, too) will need at least PS3 FW 1.80 and PSP FW 3.50. According to the press release, Sony's got more things planned for us in future updates, so we'll keep you posted on those.
Thanks to tipsters SooperGooman, mik3yl3, PSP_Gangsta, and JollyRoger for the quick heads up!
UPDATE: PlayStation Network Operations Director Eric Lempel posted a video demonstration of the newly released PS3 FW 2.0 over at the official PlayStation Blog. While an official changelog has yet to be released, Lempel provided these comments:
We've created a quick video demonstration of some of the new features (shot using the PlayStation Eye). Inside, youÂ’ll see a quick run through of how Themes, the Information Board, Remote Start, and custom photo and music playlists work.

Everyone I see (on the boards) seems to like to this firmware update, but there is one common problem apparently with the new firmware, it lacks In-Game XMB which I know a lot of people (myself included) wanted and are disappointed with the missing feature. I guess that we will have to wait for Sony to make some type of announcement.
still no in-game xmb access. and this new PSN section of the menu? WEAK!!! why the hell do we need a whole new icon for the same old stuff?
this news board thing looked cool at first, but its crap! all it is is game ads. and its hella annoying and distracting.
however, the playlists look cool, and are a good add. and the only thing this remote on thing is good for is scaring people who are in the same room with the PS3 turned off.
Just because there is a feature in the update that you don't like Doesn't mean that you have to use it you know..
yay! you can put games and videos in folders!
And whitlightning, if you actually read the article you would know that the remote start is to access your photos, music or videos from anywhere in the world without having to call home and tell somone to turn on your ps3.
I think you need to simply stop being so spoilt whitelightning. When did sony ever confirm that they were gonna have in game xmb access? No one here cares about your complaining
i agree with whitelightning here. they said in an old blog that 2.0 would have in-game XMB but we didnt get it.
I don't know if only me but in remote start, the psp turn on the ps3 but later the psp display a message of error of connection and I have to connect again to be connected to the ps3... anyway the playlist feature is cool... the message board I thought it was better but let's see later... custome theme is good but not so wow since I saw it already in the psp... I hope they bring some multimedia theme and not a silly one and gaming ones... hate those.
About the Icon welllllllll... just look out of place...
fine without in-game XMB since launch... and i bought my PS3 knowing it doesn't have it so i ain't crying and whining if it's not there yet... everthing that i'm getting from firmware updates are bonuses that there's no need for me to cry like a freakin baby.
besides as a PSP owner i would take remote play anyday... it's a hundred cooler than in-game XMB.
now to go to the store and see if they've got some themes there now.
i cant belive they doesnt put a simple clock timer yet annywhere annoying little thing imagine a cell phone without timer oh wait u have to in setting option to see what time is it
yeah, I F*ing know that kaden. I was saying sony packed it full of BS game ads instead of actual news.
and payka, if you actually knew what the hell you were talking about, you'd realize I'm talking about remote START, not remote PLAY. something which I use all the time. remote START seems like a pointless F*ing feature to me, since I have mine folding all the time anyway.
I'm not some child b*tching because I didnt get what I want. I'm simply saying that this update is a huge disappointment
Hey I just wanna clarify if anyone else has this problem?
I can turn on the PS3 with my 3.71 M33-2 PSP when I use Remote Play on it - the problem - I can't access my PS3 XMB - it says that I need a firmware update for the PSP ?????
I wish they made a timer setting for the PS3 that you can preset to automatically turn your PS3 off if inactive such as when downloads are complete or say when your using remote play halfway across the world on a month long vacation and for some reason you lose your hotspot connection.
I mean, I'm not totally livid about it, but I'd still like XMB ingame... mainly for stuff like custom soundtracks.
The PSP thing is kewl. They're working closer and closer to that "Whip out your PSP anywhere (with wifi) and be able to access any of your PS3's content with it" kind idea.
remote start only works with psp firmware 3.72. update to 3.72 HX-1 to use it.
Remote Start is so you can actually use Remote Play when you aren't home to turn on your PS3 you retard. Most people don't leave it folding, they turn the damn thing off and then when they're on the road somewhere want to access their music/videos/Remote play games with their PSP and if the PS3 is off it's a little hard to do that.
God you are dumb.
You are absolutly correct plus a timer on the sisaxis so it whould know when to turn off in during inactivity...
You do seem like a child *****ing because you didn't get your way. The update is actually pretty cool. It might be disappointing to you but that doesn't make it a bad update. Remote start is a great feature, especially for someone who travels a lot. You can take your PSP with you and access your PS3 from anywhere in the world without having to leave it on the whole damn time you're away on business or vacation. Not everyone who owns a PS3 is a student that can just leave it on while they're in school. Yes the in-game XMB would've been great and lot of people including me want it, but just because it's not in there it doesn't make this a poor or bad update by any means.
They definitely need to implement something like that in there. I would really bite if that were to happen and you come home to a 500 dollar power bill. Not to mention the wear and tear that it would cause to your PS3 being on for that long period of time.
I ain't mad, even though I am hoping for playing customize music in games soon. Also I think more work should be done to that browser. Nonetheless, i'll live with it.
I know this is the ps3's birthday month (yaaay), so i know they got something huge planne..... hopefully!
I look forward to new themes. I've been wanting that for some time now.
I bet the most of what we see in the begining will be re-hashed PNG icons. Mostly from the *nux and OSX world :)
Gonna work on making my own tonight!
sony sucks, that's why
OMG LOL @ SONY FANBOYS BASHING THE TRUTH
Cool it sounds like xbox live v.05 Good try sony maybe you will catch up in 10 years since that is how long the ps3 is supposed to last.
