After weeks of white noise, Playstation Network, which you might know by its former name Sony HUB, cleared up most of the
ambiguity surrounding Sony's counterstrike to Xbox Live. Its online services for the PS3 will offer owners some free gaming at the basic subscription level and allow members to host their own game servers.
Sony's hopes lie in the ”more games, pay less” strategy will help it catch up with Xbox Live. Aside from the free game playing, the PSN buffet will include voice/video chat, messaging, matchmaking, ranking, game data uploading/downloading, shopping, content downloading, micro payments and subscriptions.

*raises eyebrow*, could do without that
content downloading, micro payments and subscriptions:
aww ****, guys, this is not a PC. I want plug and play capability, no ****ing around having to enter my credit card and pay for addons and stuff. pop-go-play online is a console.

If u didnt read they are offering online gaming for free through third party servers. Could be game company servers or player servers. this is probably why they are working with gamespy.
So you indeed could pop in a disk, make a gamespy ID and start playing. but if you want content download, you better expect to pay for it just like PC and xbox games.
This will be several times better then xboxlive because the ganespy network itself destroys xboxlive in every category. gamespy offers the service free but you have to deal with ads, and the free online gaming will probably do the same thing as well.

good luck sony. i have no faith in you anymore, if some day you actually start thinking of the gamers rather than the marketing, i may return. but it doesnt look like it will be any time soon.

This is all pretty much pie in the sky. Anything could happen.

HAHAHAHA. Wait, where you serious!? LMAO.
Kid, go try and play games on the gamespy network and tell me it beats live first before you start talking. ROFL.
Live is always going to be number 1. Deal with it. Sony is king of offline for now, but online, you don't just copy something and expect it to work. Hell I'd really be surprised if Microsoft doesn't sue them on some front, which they probably will like the rest of the world is doing.

And they're off to a good start: launching after the 360 thereby having less games in comparison, with a more expensive machine. Good going sony. If they're planning on taking less money off people then I can't see them lasting much longer when they'll be losing so much per machine sold already.
