Ó
Guys who are reading this may want to check on their PlayStation 3s, as word is out that the North America release for Firmware 1.90 is primed and ready. This update reportedly went up at 11 p.m. central time, although its changelog hasn't been released for viewing - we'll update as soon as this info is released. For the moment, guys downloading the update can opt to view Japan's fw 1.90 changelog from our previous post - all conveniently translated in Babelfish. Maybe we just might be looking at the same thing with our version here:
- Games on the XMB can now be sorted
- Inclusion of "eject disk" on the option menu
- BD/DVD setting now provides an option for 24Hz output over HDMI
- CD music output also has new options for output frequency: 44.1, 88.2, and 176.4 kHz
- Output settings will be available for PSOne and PS2 games.
- Bookmarks can now be added
- Browser Security will be added to the tools of the PS3 internet browser
- Video settings can be changed in-game
- Music settings now include "Bit Mapping"
- Emoticons and avatars are included in the chat, avatars move in reaction to audio in AV chat
- AVCHD type animated pictures can be saved from Memory Sticks
*UPDATE* Article originally posted Jul 23, 2007 at 09:40PM
Well, it's not much of an official US changelog as "changelogs" usually go, but our download's just finished and we decided to copy the features list for the new update. Here it is, reproduced word-for-word:
Main Features Revised In System Software Version 1.90
- A wallpaper feature has been added. You can now select a photo to display as the XMB (XrossMediaBar) background.
- You can now use emoticons in messages under [Friends].
- Support for text entry in simplified Chinese characters has been added.
- You can now select traditional Chinese characters as a text entry method.

XBox 360's dying all over
Crappy E3 from Microsoft
Cancelled X07 (sad... really no future for you XBots.. and please Halo is pathetic)
Games you guys are so desperate to go multiplat staying with Sony
Some surprise good exclusives for Sony
PS3 getting better and better from games (XBox games are neverheard wannabees) to PSN to Home to firmware updates
Microsoft exec have abandoning the 360 by selling stocks
Peter Moore bailing a sinking ship
PS3 suddenly outselling the 360 (even in Microsofts homecourt the USA) inspite the PS3 still being the most expensive console and with little change in games library
Microsoft still not earning a single cent with the XBox, still consistently reporting losses
XBox 360 sales down 60%
the Wii surpassing the 360 by end of the month
no wonder you're here.
anyway you can always play Pacman.
now just get the fu*ck out of here!!! we're talking about our firmware update... get on your phone and make friends with Microsoft customer service.

Why cant the 360 have 1080p games like the ps3 does? Why cant the 360 have more than 9 GB of data for a game?
Please dont post ignorant BS like the comment above and mine. I'm just showing that it can be done on both sides.
They are both great consoles. The Wii is great in its own respect and they all have there own advantages and disadvantages. Buy the one (or more) that suits your preference and quit trying to say how much better one is than the other.
It will come down to what games are created for what console. In my opinion the PS3 has the advantage right now. But who knows the next 6 - 12 months will be the deciding factor.
Sony please give us In-Game XMB access.

All the things that I complained the PS3 couldn't do vs the 360 are now being shot down one by one.
In time the games will come and the 360 will have some serious competition which is a good thing. Sony and Microsoft need to fight and claw at each other trying to get to the top. That in turn is very good for us the gamers.
For example. I'm pretty sure that the Elite was released in response to the PS3 having HDMI. If not for the PS3 I'm sure that MS would have told us to be happy with component and VGA and they will think about adding it to their next console.
Nope. I don't want to see Sony or MS fail at this point. I want them to both keep chasing after the carrot (the gamer / consumer) so we continue to see the best that they can come up with instead of throwing us a bone or scraps when they feel like it.

I think you are spot-on with that post of yours! I simply cannot comprehend why idiots like Xman and gamerocker cannot understand that a Console monopoly could be disastrous for the gamer. Microsoft has a very bad reputation as far as their business ethics and practices are concerned. Consider how they won the Browser Wars against Netscape Navigator unethically, and after they won, they did NO INNOVATION WHATSOEVER on their browser Internet Explorer for 6+ years. For a Browser, that is a really long time - like 15-20 years in a Console life. They were forced to get off their a5s when Firefox came on the browser scene and started rocking their boat. I think, if the same thing happened here, we would probably see no big innovation in the console market for a long time (I'm not counting Nintendo, as, at the moment, their console cannot be really considered a next-gen console as far as hardware capabilities are concerned - of course, that may change).
Which is why the survival of Sony as a strong gaming hardware company is crucial, and day by day, it looks as if the tables are getting more even, and Sony is regaining its footing.
This is good for us, the gamers, as Sony and Microsoft going head-to-head will only mean higher quality games and more entertainment options for us.
I am usually disappointed with the quality of the posts here, what with trolls like MCS, Xman, Aoxao..., squatting over each and every Sony article. Among the few posts that I enjoy reading or are even-minded are those of Folding Junkie, Quixand, sometimes Passer-by7, and on rare occasions, Shatterdome. Your post was new to me and I really liked it. Kudos for an enjoyable, intelligent read.

So what's up with this QJ? Don't you verify this stuff before posting it? Anyone know where I can get an accurate change log?
Anyhow, the only notable addition I see in this update is the wallpaper addition which I don't really care about. Sony needs to hop to and get their act together with these updates.
I want my music in game (which my comparably weak PSP can already do, no thanks to $ony). I want access to my friends list/messages in game. I want to be able to go to the PS Store without everyone on my friends list seeing I'm on and trying to message me. I really hope I don't have to wait for Home to launch for these features to be added if they're ever going to be added.
The machine is clearly well made (I have left mine on for months at a time without issue) and very powerful. Unfortunately, most of it's potential is currently going to waste. I have been spending more time on my PS2 lately than my PS3. This is a little disappointing to me. I hope $ony gets me off my PS2 sooner than later.
I still like the PS3 more than my Wii and I'm not buying another neXtBOX to break on me (I will never buy another Micro$oft console/product for me, my family or friends again) but this is getting old $ony, very, very old.
Am I the only one disappointed by this update?

If 360's were dying all over, people wouldn't still be buying.
Secondly, E3 for MS was at least about 2007. Not, "Wait till 08, then our games are coming". Thats what E3 08 is for duh.
Cancelled X07 (they've done it before and there's another event). As far as the Halo series being overrated. Let's compare:
Halo 1- 5 mil sold.
Halo 2- over 8 Mil sold.
MGS 2 - 7 mil
MGS 3 - 3.7 mil.
Hmmm..... Besides Halo one outselling MGS 3 and nearing MGS 2, the series combined outsells the MGS series (at least on the PS2, which is sad given that 100 mil vs 30-40 mil number). Not only this, but Halo 1 has outsold almost every PS2 exclusive except Kingdom Hearts and MGS 2. The other GTAs can be bought on xbox.
Games we are desparate to see go multiplat? Erm....which would be? What MGS 4 and FFXIII? I've outgrown the final fantasies, besides by the time they come out (09) ill be gearing up for X cubed or whatever they are calling up the next xbox. And again, the "wait till the future" bit is getting tiring.
Sony does have some surprising good exclusivs, I'll give you that.
As far as xbox games being neverheard Wannabes:
Halo
Gears of War
I could stop there but I won't.
PGR
Forza
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Huxley
GTA IV
RE 5
SH 5
DMC 4
Eternal Sonata
Banjo Kazoie
etc etc
I could keep going with the list of games from ubisoft (Splinter cell 5, endwar, etc), ea, epic, mistwalker, etc, but again to prove my point, there aren't too many "wannabes" on the 360.
PSN Network updates....I won't even comment on. Sufficed to say Live is the better service. Period.
MS exec selling stocks...selling stocks doesn't happen in the corporate world everrrr.
Peter Moore wasn't bailing for a sinking ship, I doubt he would have been getting all those tats and all if he knew he was leaving.
PS3 suddenly outselling the 360 in the USA. I would like to see, because last I checked, in June the 360 outsold the Ps3 by about 100k consoles, so if someone would like to point out where this exactly is occuring that'd be great.
And FYI, sony is still losing on every PS3 made too, duh.
And as for your wii comment, how about the wii surpassing you within the first 2 months. The last thing you need to be commenting on as a PS3 fanboy is console sales lol.

Let's see, it currently stands at 7 million users after 5 years on the market. PSN stands at almost 2 million after less than a year on the market.
Xbox Live is managed by A LOT of idiots who work at Microsoft, and if you have ever heard of the InFamous Clan, you'd know what I'm talking about.
Xbox Live has been out for 5 years, and it took most of that time for it to get what PSN has been getting for less than a year.
Need I go on?
So what games are you playing? Gears of War? (Took a year to be released), The Darkness? Or any of the other 458934295723971294790427927 FPS games that the 3FixMe is known for?

So you are back, along with your made-up facts and conclusions?
"The XBOX 360 can upscale to 1080p via VGA or HDMI (component on some TVs), not just 1080i."
-- Where in his post does Quixand say that the 360 cannot upscale? Most of us are aware that the 360 does a pretty good job of that. It's only gamerocker and other trolls like him + you that keep on referring to the upscale issue.
"My god the 360 defects are overexaggerated ! I guess people believe anything on the internet. Disc scratching lawsuit is total BS."

I've got several more. (Keep in mind that QJ can turn equal to plus. So remember to substitute)
So you are saying that people should stop believing Gaming and other news sites, and should believe in YOU instead? Give me a break!
"but PS3 fantards have a notoriously short term memory for some reason... Microsoft delivers games like always beter quality and quantity than the PS3 and that isn't going to change any time soon."
-- Looks like 360 fanatics have a short memory as well - they seem to forget extremely easily that the PS3 is no longer devoid of games. Sure, games are multiplatform, but that doesn't mean they are only on the PS3, and also that doesn't simply mean they will be better on the 360. Only a 360 fanboy would think like that. As developers get more used to the PS3 architecture, multiplatform games stand a good chance at being just as good as the 360 version. Also, need I remind you that the PS3 has its own share of great exclusives? Also, you said that Microsoft delivering good games isn't going to change anytime soon. Granted, but that doesn't mean it's going to stay like that forever either. Nothing is forever, remember that.
"Why is Halo 3 pathetic when it's unreleased?"
-- Which idiot said that? That is certainly not true. Also, you didn't need to add that as I don't see that in Quixand's post. Looks like your FUD regarding your 360 is clouding not only your logic and reason, but also your memory.
"Don't get me started on PSN or home, which nobody in their right mind would pay for."
-- Oh, but PSN and Home are free, unlike XBL. Granted, XBL is way better than PSN in its present iteration. But don't forget, PSN and Home are evolving entities as well. And if you think that Home is only good for walking around in an avatar, then it seems as if the only people you've been listening to regarding this are your 360 buddies.
Regarding PS3's firmware updates, at least they are continually trying to find ways to incrementally change the PS3 experience for the better. Don't talk as if all the 360 updates have been relevant and useful. Have you seen a picture of the small keyboard attachment for the 360 Controller? Talk about useless!
"That MS exec that sold stock did it over many months as part of normal business practice."
Granted. The only reason this didn't fall under the tag of insider trading was because of the time of the fiscal year that he sold it at. Anyway, that's not a pertinent point to gaming, and I concede that Quixand need not have brought that up.
"Peter Moore"
-- So Ken Kutaragi leaving Sony was because he was kicked out and Peter Moore leaving MS is because he was ready to leave? Talk about biased and prejudiced! But yeah, that wasn't pertinent to Sony as well. However, I do recall you coming on to the PS3 forums and gloating when Ken was leaving/kicked out. So your statement "Even I didn't see a reason to make a big deal about that though" is a hypocritical lie. But then, 99% of what you say is a lie anyway.

"PS3 sold better than the 360 because sony's bait and switch tactics"
-- As if Microsoft never sold any bundles. Could you get ANY more biased? And what's wrong with the price drop? I go to a store and I can get the PS3 for only 499 + tax? I don't see anything wrong with that. Hell, taking into account the reliability issues of the 360 leading to spending possibly more than just the sale price, I would opt for a PS3 as I get a lot more than a gaming machine.
"Wii is surpassing the PS3 everywhere by a huge margin"
The Wii is surpassing both the PS3 and the 360. So I agree, that point is moot.
"Are you trying to lure me back here for a debate or something?"
Hah! That's a joke! As if anybody needs to lure you to a PS3 forum. Your own envy and jealosy of the PS3 (or your FUD regarding the 360) will do the trick.
"No problem. I can win any debate"
-- Don't go and pat yourself on your back just yet. If you enter a debate with a mind open to seeing logic and reason, I don't think you'll last 5 minutes, as the only thing you are adept at is spouting irrational bias regarding the PS3.
I think the 360 as a gaming machine is excellent. Also, at the same time, I think the PS3 is not only a well-designed piece of electronics, it is a piece of art. Most reasonable people will agree to that as well.
You, on the other hand, think the 360 can do no wrong and that the PS3 can do nothing right. So who's the fantard here?
Your turn...

What we don't like about the way that they post is the way they tell us that we are retarded, not in our right mind, or g@y as many of them like to say. It's like the two people eating steak and chicken. Let's say that someone comes up to them and asks what they are eating. The guy eating steak says "I have steak and it tastes great. You should try it too!" The guy eating chicken spits his food on them and says "Look, I am eating chicken and unless your retarded you will too!" Two ways to say the same thing but one is repulsive, annoying, and without reason while the other is far more palatable.
Your post is a breath of fresh air and I also appreciate it. Have a great day!

And seeming how the xbox is not doing great due to its prototype parts, i wonder where the xbox will be in 6 months.
The ps3 has been selling like hotcakes this month. And from Sony it reads when the July sales come out and wee see the huge margin of sales you might even see a possible permanent Price cut from Sony. Still think the ps3 is bad.

To the ^^ person who was respond to Quixand by using the name " To Quixand " The xbox are dying all over. The reason why people are buying them is cause there first one died and had to buy a new one, see the repetitive cycle. I suggest you stop talking nonsense and please get out of a PS3 forum. Go back to your forum. This article isn't on the xbox forum.

Secondly, it's obviously NOT people buying consoles over , because MS replaces them free, duh. Good try though, next time let's use that organ in your skull that hasn't gotten much use in the past few years. The 360 is selling because it's a good system.
I love how there's ALWAYS an excuse for Sony. Next year. "Soon the devs will learn how to use its hardware", which IIRC oblivion was already putting out spectacular graphics and that was what? Four months after launch? Then the entire slew of games showing off 360 came afterward. You guys had resistance and motorstorm and hte hype just died. Period. I don't wanna hear about 08 or 09. I want to hear about NOW, and Sony can NOT deliver things now. They know it and so does every else, which is why they have chosen to focus on 08 because this IS a lost year for them, period.
"I think the 360 as a gaming machine is excellent. Also, at the same time, I think the PS3 is not only a well-designed piece of electronics, it is a piece of art. Most reasonable people will agree to that as well. "
Obviously they don't or the PS3 would be selling better. I don't think people realize that if the PS3 was this home media center for a great value that was worth it, that people WOULD be buying it, everyone likes a good deal, but as it stands, IT IS NOT SELLING. Obviously there's nothing wrong with the people, so it must be the system. Logic {Do you have it?}

" Finally someone capable of intelligent debate!"
-- My own view of myself is not that great, but thanks all the same.
"Still, I disagree with some things you said."
-- Of course you are entitled to your own opinion. What matters is that, when presented with facts, one should be willing to think outside the boundaries formed by one's own prejudices and be willing to do a little introspection to think why one thinks what they think. If one cannot do that, a debate will just turn into an argument, and when that happens, there can be no knowledge exchanged or gained, only a shouting match, with the calmer person letting go in the end.
"I do believe the 360 reliability issues are exaggerated, especially the disc scratching.I think everyone's jumping on the bandwagon of MS bashing, and it doesn't take much at all to start rumors these days."
-- I believe the 360 reliability issues are exaggerated a little as well. However, unlike you, I won't say these are non-existent. I would say these do exist to an appreciable extent. As far as I can see, this is the result of some ill-conceived design issues with the 360 internals, and I do believe that these will be fixed in future iterations of the 360, just not yet. As for MS-bashing, I think not all of the negative attention Sony has received from the media or from people for the PS3 has been warranted. I mean, when Home and LittleBigPlanet were announced, GameSpot actually came up with a list of things that were lacking in the PS3. Isn't that highly biased, focusing only on the negatives and not looking at the positives at all? I mean, here they announce a revolutionary concept for a game, where you can build your own levels on a Console and share them with others, a game which is all about creativity, and people like these ignore this completely? As for rumours, I think you've done your fair share of spreading anti-Sony rumours on QJ. A little bit of introspection on your part (if you can) and you'll know I'm right.
"Microsoft's firmware updates have had better features."
-- That's subjective, you know. If Sony were to have some update which I appreciated, that would be "better" for me. I think "good", "better" and "best" are highly subjective terms, and I do wish you wouldn't pass these terms off as objective.
"If both companies could set aside their differences and combine their efforts they could make the perfect console"
-- What a thought man! I wish! However, there is an inherent danger in that happening: a competition is what makes innovation possible. Why do you think Microsoft and Sony are going all-out in trying to come up with good games and good features, to the best of their respective capabilities? It's because of each other. They fight it out and we the gamers reap the benefits. A monopoly breeds stagnation (Case in point, IE6 not being upgraded for 6+ years after MS won the browser wars, until Firefox came on the scene and made MS sweat).

"As long as I have a working console and I don't need to pay to fix it if it breaks, I'm happy."
-- That's the point, I've heard of so many people having to pay after the earlier 1-year Warranty period. It's only now, after Microsoft realized that they couldn't sweep this problem under the rug any longer, that they brought out the 3-year warranty thing to appease their consumers. If you think Microsoft as a company is holier-than-thou, you've got a big shock coming some time in the future. Neither company, MS or Sony is altruistic or has OUR best interests at heart.
"PS3s don't sell well over a period of time, and they won't sell like this for long. Nobody will want 80gb PS3s when the 60gb models are gone. They are a complete ripoff and cheaper for sony to make than the 60gb model."
-- You don't know that mate. This is what I see (or maybe hope) happens: there is still enough 60 GB stock to last a while. And it's not as if there are no games coming out. More 60 GBs sold will mean a larger install-base, which in turn will mean more games sold, and thus more incentive for Developers to concentrate on the PS3 as well. Also, I don't think that production costs being lowered for the 80 GB model is cause for you to view Sony as a company bent on ripping you off. Going by that logic, since Nintendo's production cost per model is lower than the sale price, Nintendo is ripping off all its customers. Also, the only thing I see different in the 80 GB model that is not as good as the 60 GB model is the lack of the Emotion Engine. Otherwise, everything else in the 60 GB model is already there in the 80 GB model, in addition to 20 GB of more space.
"The exclusives are what matters. I think the PS3 is lacking in exclusives. Metal Gear 4 is the only promising "exclusive" on the PS3 at the moment. The rest just don't interest me. I can't get excited about a game without playing it first because everyone that makes it will make it out to be the best thing ever."
-- Again, this is highly subjective. I've no doubt that someone who has invested their time and money in a 360 and is highly biased will always try to put down PS3 exclusives. Same goes for prejudiced PS3 fans who will think that 360 exclusives are crap. I think the 360 has some pretty good exclusives, both existing and coming out, like Kameo, Gears Of War, Forza2, Halo3, Mass Effect, Fable 2 (this one I'm really looking forward to :) ). I think PS3 has some pretty good exclusives as well, existing and coming out - Resistance, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone 2, Warcraft, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet (this one I'm really excited about), etc. So you see, it's all a matter of preference. Also, that part where you say everyone makes out that an unreleased game will be the best thing ever - isn't that what most 360 fans are guilty of as well? You can't say that 360 fans are any more mature than PS3 fans. So who's to say Mass Effect, Fable2, Too Human, etc. are any good. I'll concede Halo3 might be good as some people have already tried the beta and have praised it. But the rest - nobody's seen them in action yet, much like nobody's seen KZ2, R and C Future, HS, LBP - I won't count MGS4, WarCraft as people have already tried or laid eyes on the demo and those are reportedly good.

"The PS3's current sales are the result of bait and switch, not a sustained price drop."
-- Again, you don't know that. Just wait till we run out of 60 GB models, and let's see what Sony does next until you write them off, shall we? Unless you've already made up your mind without giving them the benefit of the doubt.
"I wouldn't call the PS3 a piece of art, more like an excuse to get blu ray into homes. That's how sony sees it anyway."
-- No. That's how YOU (and many 360 fanatics who have their ego invested in a 360) see it. I actually bought the PS3 as I was getting a very good Blu-Ray Player in addition to a very good gaming machine. Compared to the 360 with its huge Power Supply, and well, lack of excellent hardware design (I won't go into all the issues again), the PS3 IS a piece of art, an expensive one no doubt, but a piece of art nonetheless. However, I do realize that this is subjective and to you, the 360 might be the ultimate piece of electronics. All I ask is you do not ridicule others for their choice.
As for Ken Kutaragi, yes, he might be brilliant as far as electronics and hardware design goes, but I agree that his PR skills do leave something to be desired.
"Reply if you want, but I'm done here."
-- That would mean that yours is the only opinion in the world you listen to, my friend. Yours or to others that agree with you. If that's the way you conduct debates, then I don't think "debate" is the word you are looking for. Monologue is more like it.

- There are people out there who can't afford so. Period. I don't know about anywhere else but in NY its hard for kids to get jobs other than at McD's, so an XB360 or PS3 is like three whole week's pay. Oh, let's not forget to earn that money, there goes a lot of playing time, unless he/she skips school. A better use for a job of those whose parents cannot afford to buy them two or more consoles is to save that money from the after school job for college. Then get a good job and buy as many freakin consoles they want or even better, a car, a house, etc. When you're no longer the spoiled little brat whose parents buy them everything you want (your attitude is typical of one) you'll understand.
