Turns out that PS3 FW 1.81 will indeed roll out this week. In fact, it will roll out tomorrow: June 15! How's that for some good news. And to think that FW 1.80 hasn't been around for a month yet.The announcement was made by way of the official PlayStation blog, as posted by Eric Lempel. Included in the Firmware update will be a couple of improvements with regards to the RGB settings. Lempel writes:
In 1.80 we added an option to the XMB under settings allowing you to choose between RGB Full and Limited. Basically if you are connecting your PS3 to your TV using an HDMI cable, and if your TV supports RGB full range, the picture quality may be improved when this option is set to Full. Some of you pointed out that the Full setting would sometimes revert back to Limited and 1.81 will address this issue. Please keep in mind that this setting is only effective when the PS3 is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable.
More than this, the author of the blog entry drops a rather intriguing hint at what the devs are working on right now: improvements on PS2 compatibility. Is there something more to PS2 upscaling than we previously thought? Hmmm...
UPDATE:PlayStation 3 Firmware 1.81 is now up! In fact, we're downloading it right now. We're not sure if this update is green for all regions, but so far it looks good on our end. How about yours? None of the official PlayStation portals have listed this update nor is a changelog present, but we'll update you all on that soon.

UPDATE 2: Like we said in the previous update, PlayStation 3 FW 1.81 is now live. Despite that, however, it's still unknown what are the real changes made in this upgrade. All of that is about to change as the official PlayStation site in UK posted the changelog for the said firmware.

I think they have done a good job on the updates, 2.0 has yet to be made, but i'm sure they got some good ideas for it.

This isnt really an update... its just a fix (Which people are forgetting). Im sure that in 1.90 there will be some good 2.00 features added in. I think 1.90 will be out by the end of june or early july.

Calling all cars, Motorstorm (music blows in that game) Mk2, oblivion, and tekken. We need some damn custom soundtracks and im not buying an xbox 360 until they fix that overheating system failure i want 140 bucks outa your pocket cause we *****ed up bul*****. im at 1.7 and upgrade just for those interesting demo's.
over and over im ranting ravving or better yet craving for an RGB support through Component cables. i have 1080p capable PC monitor, and the only thing that shows on it are ps2 games that supports progressive scan like gran tursmo 4 and god of war 1 and 2. please sony include a RGB PC monitor support for PS3, so i can play Full HD without forking out money for a Component tp RGB adaptor.

Hey has anyone experienced problems with their PS3 wifi connection since firmware 1.8? If it has cut the connection while connected and it comes up as a DNS error?

yeh that happens to me sometimes. I just reset the console and it seems to start working again but it doesnt happen to much .....
i have had that priblem i had to open up ports just to sign in and it still signs out everytime i quit a game
This has security update written all over it (very fine invisible text that is).
Well i went on the ps3 store and i downloaded the little update thing for motorstorm its free and all. was quite a small file. so it downloaded an installed and now it wont load motorstorm... any one else having this problem ??

If you have a linksys wireless router. the media sharing will sometimes trip your router. tried it with 1.81 today and the same thing happens. so no media sharing for me untill they fix it. I turned the sharing off and no problems with wi fi.

updates are cool but cool enough you guys got so much to do!!!! here are a few ideas....... * update the web browser its pants! cant even go on myspace properly or cant open certain webpages due to flash content blah blah blah * all ps1 and ps2 software can be played on ps3 ive still got a copy of FF7 & FF8!! * able to listen to your own music while playing a game or browsing through the xmb menu * oh when you choose an image from your photos to use as a background it should stay there until you change it again or put it back to normal xmb mode * yes my english is rubbish lol * able to upload your own avatar on your online profile * well thats it for the mo! think about it lads it be great!
What amazes me is we JUST HAD an excellent updates with lots of features and fixes. This comes out barely 2 weeks later and everyone *****es and moans. It's a fix. So Sony, moving quickly to fix a known issue...gets *****ed out because it doesn't have more. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. Would you all prefer they either leave the fixes to a big update months away? Or perhaps release a big update now that's full of holes and bugs?
You're all morons. They actually stepped up their game by being quick to correct a problem. Not all updates are meant to give you new exciting features to make your otherwise meaningless lives have purpose. Sometimes they're just there to improve an already good idea. You can all get bent.

I got me a PS3, 60gb, and a 15 inch HD TV/monitor, which does 720p/1080i...I guess I'm semi-poor because it doesn't do 1080p.
Sorry about not knowing this...I have a HDMI to DVI adapter to my DVI input TV. Will this affect me as well? I have not noticed much of a difference with regular DVD quality after the update...
Maybe you should have thought about that and saved your money to buy both later on whenever the PS3 has an adequate game list for you.
Crazz, what res have u got ur PS3 to output to? If your TV supports up to 1080i, try setting it to 720p as it looks alot better. Turn on the Full Color for HDMI and you will notice a big difference in the color output! Looks so much better!

I Got the same problem, Went online got the free patch for motorstorm and system update to 1.81 and now cant plat the freekin game!
Ah well Back to Resistance till 1.82.
Just delete motorstorm update 1.1 then start again!

It's an update that highly benefits those with an HDTV/HDMI cable. I have to wonder how improvements seems to piss some people off lol. I mean I hate waiting to update my ps3 constantly, but I'm pretty satisfied with them considering no previous consoles (to my knowledge besides xbox360) allowed them. AND THEY'RE FREE!!!
I mean what other update could you ask for then an improvement on visuals?I mean you shouldn't have got th ps3 if you have a garbage t.v. honestly. They're not gonna come out with an update that gives your ps3 wings or anything if that's what your waiting on.
And for the games, they're coming out. PS3 was smart in waiting to pop out the games after the next gen system hype, because they're going to simply be unequivocal starting Q4.

I remember with the playstation 2 having a few DVDs that REQUIRED a 2MB DVD Player file because of the fact that compatibility was so awful. Sony will release new features when they're ready, it does take time.
