Unreal Engine logo - Image 1In a recent interview, Epic Games' CEO Tim Sweeney revealed the next version of its widely adopted Unreal Engine will be focused on the next console generation. Unreal Engine 3, which has been licensed by other prominent video game companies such as Activision, Electronic Arts, and Square Enix, is planned to last this generation according to the Epic head honcho.

Speaking to TG Daily, Sweeney was quoted saying:

There is a long life ahead for Unreal Engine 3. Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360, Sony's successor for the Playstation 3 - and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also. PCs will follow after that.

Sweeney explained that Unreal Engine 4 would have to be capable of working with multiple cores. He mentioned that following Moore's Law, it could very well be possible in 2010 to equip a machine with tens of CPU cores on one processor chip considering how many cores the Xbox 360 has now.

While we're pondering whether there's gonna be Xbox 720 or not in a couple of years from now, you can hit the "via" link below for more of Sweeney's interview.

The Unreal Engine series has always been great, as they made up some of the good games we love -- it's just crazy on how they are already speculating on UE4 o_O It'll probably be crazy

Yea, but the Cry Engine 3 well be way superior to Unreal Engine 4...

Just think of what will make you go OMG once you have gotten used to Unreal Engine 3 visuals, that is what the Unreal Engine 4 will be like.
