Under 24 hours: Home hacked; SKFU expose vulnerabilities, Alek agrees

Cracking systems even before you can finish saying the sentence "Sony hates hackers" is nothing really new. We've seen homebrew developers sprint to the finish line a mere couple of hours after an official firmware has been released. Still, knowing how truly feasible expedient hacking can be done, that doesn't make it any less sad -- especially for Sony.

The highly-hullaballoo'd HOME just opened its doors today; not even 24 hours yet and it's now already a hack statistic. Worse, there's a full list of exposed vulnerabilities in it that we're pretty sure Sony won't exactly be too proud about, and will bring a huge grin of "I told you so" from Microsoft.

Irony - Image 1

Straight from SKFU's blog, he shows little restraint in showing his disappointment with Home, saying that he can only agree with Microsoft's comment of "It feels like 2005 tech in 2008. I'm not sure that's what people want."

But one of the vulnerabilities he discovered would be the ability to delete any file from HOME servers and download any content from HOME as you may please. What can be viewed as the biggest facepalm item for Sony, however, would be that there is the ability to upload any file to the HOME server.

Meanwhile, even Alek, in a post at Sceners.org, agrees with SKFU when the latter expressed discontent over the two-year delay, only to be presented with a HOME beta "on a technical standard from 2005 with crappy graphics, a few boring areas and many many many many many many many bugs."

He did say, though, that launching under open beta would necessarily mean bugs and "tons of errors trying to connect this first days." Alek also noted that it looks as if all the houses under the closed beta have been deleted, so you guys would have to recreate them again -- hopefully the cost won't be too much, but I doubt that somehow.

So, at the end of the day, it wasn't exactly the grand opening we were all hoping for. You can check out the vulnerabilities list over at SKFU's blog linked below. But remember, this is just for information. Don't use it for some other backhanded tactics you boys might wanna try and cook up, alright?

Thanks to SKFU and Tcraw77813 for sending in your tips!

by Lethal_NFS - 2008-12-11 14:34
» Ummmm

Proud to be first is so elementary school.

Anyways, vulnerabilities in a beta? NO EFFIN WAY!!!! You mean the BETA is not perfect? NO EFFIN WAY!!!!!

by lee123 - 2008-12-11 14:39
» umm...

beta or not, sony should have been alot smater than to leave there servers vunverable, especially one where you can delete home files off there own server...

by truk - 2008-12-11 15:06
» fail

and that's why stuff like this shouldnt be rushed..

by zzk2001 - 2008-12-11 15:49
» RUSHED!!!!!!

2 *****ing Years... that's 2 YEARS I have Seen Homebrew Made in 2 weeks with Less holes and errors.

i am sorry but it Does not take that long to make a program that's More or Less Just like (LIFE 2)

I am sure if we Let some Monkeys go in a room they Would make a better HOME open beta then the ppl working at Sony.

» Personally, I hope Sony slaps a lawsuit ...

...on StreetskaterFU's site, for taking their intellectual property and violating the usage contract. ---I'm sorry; I followed the PSP hacking scene for a while (interested mostly in the concept of running homebrew emus, etc.). Even downgraded my firmware back in the first year.

But, anymore, I hope that people like StreetskaterFU just get a legal enema. You know, it's quite ironic when someone like him hopes to have "open systems" and the ability to modify/configure software for his/her own use .....and then publishes some crap like this to make companies like Sony have to crank-down the latches on their code EVEN TIGHTER with every release of everything.

This is just a class-A A-hole. I love the way he words the last sentence or two; basically saying "Don't use this maliciously", although his entire blog is about how to maliciously hack Home.

Give me a break: who's worse? --The big corporations with their double-speak and twisted lies promoted as truth? --or some schmuck like StreetskaterFU trying to make it sound like he is writing for "the good of the people"?

» streetskaterFU...

needs to be shot. Why would he publicize this? There is nothing to gain from defiling HOME!

by Bigbob6383 - 2008-12-11 16:30
» Or something of the sort...

It would be one thing if he was just doing this to help Sony fix the exploit and to stop others from messing with it, but instead he's just going around criticizing Sony and telling everyone how to hack the server...

by yykakashi - 2008-12-11 16:37
» blah

i agree streetskaterFU is out of line

shared a little too much info on the hacks

but yeah i say Sony has like 10 guys working on home for it too be in its current state after being worked on for a few yrs

by yykakashi - 2008-12-11 16:42
» yeah i agree with Bigbob6383

he should of just sent the list and hacks to Sony instead of spreading it

unless he's hoping someone figures out a way to hack the ps3 firmware through home???????????????????????????????

i mean he did mention that through the hacks u can delete and put files on the servers

» ...

What is "Life 2"? If you're talking about Second Life, that took 4 years to make.

by Acteon - 2008-12-11 22:35
» *Sigh*

Can't Sony get ANYTHING right? Don't get me wrong, I love the hardware and a lot of the games, but it seems every major launch gets nobbled in minutes.

by DeoWade - 2008-12-12 00:50
» It's a beta....

Of course there are going to be security holes and such, but he was way out of line with posting all of that.

by z0m13ie - 2008-12-12 01:04
» Pff

I still can't even *****ing log in.

by stevenb789 - 2008-12-12 05:43
» haha

would be cool if we can put porn on the advert boards haha

by RexNox - 2008-12-12 12:20
» i've said it before...

Home has to shed its PS2 origins.

And, recently, if it continues its current path will be known as the biggest rip-off ever.

by celebv1 - 2008-12-12 13:33
» streetskaterFU is definitely out of line

i disagree with all these noobs talking about how long it takes, its understandable that it took 2 years, especially if they started from a fresh sheet

streetskaterFU should have emailed sony these faults, not posted them on the internet for people who understand how to use the block code can do some real damage

although, i am enjoying how people

by fr@nk - 2008-12-12 21:59
» rip-off

it will be considered a rip-off if you actually paid for it....LOL home is *****KKing freee

by Fujin - 2008-12-13 01:10
» Duhhhh

Yea good thing you don't have to pay $50 dollars a year for these services and on top of that HOME isn't even a game! It's more of a community like Myspace or Facebook but even better because those sites are just TEXT... This takes that idea to the next step! (Advertisements and all) That being said the employees are more than likely underpaid with a staff of 10 or less people working on this... Of course its going to have bugs and glitches.

» Servers

there is probably lods of server side protection that will prevent everything this hacker person said.
