Uncharted 2 didn't redefine action games because it wasn't multiplatform, says Castlevania: LoS producer

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow producer Dave Cox  recently told PSM3 that while Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2 is superb both visually and technically, that doesn't mean it redefines 3rd-person action games. Why? Blame its exclusivity to the PS3.

"Uncharted 2 is a great game and I enjoyed it immensely. The standouts are the story and the voice acting," he said. "[But] Uncharted was a single format release. If any game is going to set a benchmark for a genre it would need to do so across multiple platforms."

Cox's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is being developed by Mercury Steam with help from Kojima Productions. Since it's a multiplatform third-person action game, I guess in Cox's eyes it stands a better chance of actually redefining the genre than any platform-exclusive release.

I can accept the premise, but the reason Cox gives just really makes me want to stick a lolwut pear link here.

That is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard in my life. My IQ went down just reading this load of bull. If anything, the multiplatform games are holding gaming back, not the other way around.

This guy has just lost my respect and I will never buy a game from such a mind capable of saying this dumb crap.

I will second that, stupidest thing i've ever heard.

Why does a game need to be multi-platform to redefine any genre ? I would love for him to explain his reasoning....

And I shall fourth it.
That makes absolutely no sense.
Doesn't matter what platform it's on, if it sets a new high standard then, no matter what console, it's still a new high standard.

Yeah...I hate to say it but multiplatform this gen is holding gaming back. I love my 360 and all but with DVD9 many of my favorite games this gen are either too short or full of backtracking. This is the reason why I've bought most of the PS3 exclusives. Games maybe be short but at least you can see the effort made by the devs.

Even with the "limitations" of the 360, when people make a game specifically for the 360 only, it generally shines brightly.
It's when they try to create the game for multiple vastly different platforms that it becomes troublesome.

Interestingly, that same argument can be modified to be one of the problems with the PC back in the day. However, with everything using DirectX or OpenGL, the only thing you really have to worry about these days is raw computing power, not vastly different hardware quirks and the like.

And with multiplatform games coming to the PC, you don't even have to worry much about raw power either. My 8800GT from early 2008 is still playing most of those at 1920x1200 with things cranked up high or medium high. You can create a decent powerhouse of a computer for 600 or less these days that'll play what you throw at it.

Huh... so if most of my reasoning is correct, multiplatform games and consoles in general have actually helped PC gamers in some ways?

You proved video gamers point. Multiplatform games hold gaming back. Exclusive titles have to be near perfect in order to attract the gamers to buy that system.

Online portion of the 360 is amazing which is why online multiplayer games sells more on the 360. I hate Gears with a passion, but people only love that game for the online portion.

I agree, the quality of a game should be judged irrespective of the platform(s) is it on. We don't judge films by which film studio or director made them do we? We judge them on their own merits as a unique experience, while comparing them to other films in a genre. The same should be true for games.

NO WAIT

THIS NEEDS CAPS

THE QJ EDITOR SAID REDEFINE, HE SAID SET A BENCHMARK

there is a major difference, and he is totally right, a game on the 360 doesnt have to match UC2 because its on a totally different platform.

UC2 can still redefine a genre but not set a benchmark, the two thing are totally exclusive to each

FOR CHRIST SAKE CHANGE THE TITLE

it does set a benchmark....
just cuz there is no game on 360 half as good as uncharted doesnt mean it doesnt set a benchmark... despite the fact that a game on 360 will never surpass it, that mark has been set.

You said "just cuz there is no game on 360 half as good as uncharted " so I said Mass Effect 2. Plus have you even played ME 2? Its a Shooter with some rpg element.

@Zhipp he's not a fan of Uncharted, he is just a ps3 fanboy who bashes everything about the 360. I have never seen him post something positive about the 360.

Last time I checked, Halo was Xbox exclusive and back then it redefined FPS-games on consoles.
But Uncharted 2 can't?

Doesn't PC count as a platform as well? Is his game going to be on PC and Wii as well? What's that? No?

If he means "Uncharted 2 should come out on 360" then that's just ridiculous! Why not on the PC and Wii? LoS isn't exactly "multiplatform" you can't count out Wii and the PC. SPECIALLY PC!

Setting a benchmark is hindered with even trying to make a multi platform game. Have any of you seen a multi platform game thats been ported to the PS3, it makes the PS3 graphics look poor even sitting side by side to the X360 version. this happens due to porting. if a PS3 is left to an exclusive title, it will usually be near perfection in one or more categories, ie, KZ2 UC2 MAG and so on. the 360 has huge limits to what it can do, and if you try and constrain something to within a multi platform game it turns out your limiting both PS3 and x360, and since x360 is easier to code for it usually ends up PS3 getting the short end of the stick with a pathetic port.

majority of these guys just talk out of their poop chute. Or are the "If we didn't think of it we'll bash it" trolls. I never understood why people listen to these cynical brats instead of trying something out for themselves and just accepting it for what it is, good or bad.

Like how certain ppl get all huffy over a review "there's no way the game deserved a 10" but in the same breath say "but meta critic rated it so highly" about another game. UC2 was good, but to say it was anything near revolutionary, is kinda just padding the product in my opinion.

Hang on a minute here, uncharted 2 isn't out on the 360 mostly because the 360 just couldn't do it the same justice the cell/BE/ps3 can same goes for infamous, the developers said they just couldn't get it to run anywhere nearly as good on the 360
don't get me wrong I have both but the 360 is mostly gathering dust, well except for a bit of gears of war once in a while

Both consoles have their merits. I've had my 360 for 4 years and obviously have amassed a larger collection of games for it. I've had my PS3 for a year, and built up a collection of about 300 blu rays. I haven't gone overboard with ps3 titles since I have both systems, but I've purchased most of the quality PS3 exclusive titles. Infamous, Everything God of War Related,LBP,MGS 4, the Ratchet and Clank games and Uncharted series were all the reasons I bought one in the first place. Let alone MLB the Show is the only good baseball franchise left. At least til 2k loses the "3rd party exclusive" license on MLB. Why be a fanboy?
