There will be an ultimate assassin. This much you can expect from Ubisoft as a rep in E3 affirms that Assassin's Creed 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) is but the second in an intended trilogy.
Said the Ubi rep, "It's always been planned to be a trilogy, and Desmond is going back [in time, using the Animus] to [eventually] become the ultimate assassin. Can't tell you any more, though."
Assassin's Creed 2 is expected to arrive on November 17, 2009.

But seriously the announcement of AC as a trilogy was before AC's release date.

Anyway, Ubi said that when the first game came out, since it was so successful all the fans knew it was only a matter of time. Also with all the mention of abilities bleeding over to the host and Desmond gaining some of Altair's abilities, I think it was obvious it was only a matter of time before you were playing as an Assassin in modern day settings. But I suppose its always good to hear things reaffirmed...?
