TVs without 720p downscale PS3 games

Amazing resolutionMore intriguing news from the PlayStation front. Testing on Sony's console by the folks at IGN has revealed that if your TV doesn't support 720p visuals, then 720p PS3 games will run on your TV with downscaled resolution.

If your TV isn't that new, you'll probably experience this trouble. HD sets that support 480p, 480i and 1080i will downscale 720p games when they're booted. This means that if any game meant for 720p doesn't get bumped to 1080i, but instead becomes viewable in the modest 480 fashion.

IGN confirms this through repeated testing on a 1080i television lacking 720p support. The test was based on different games that are made for 720p but not for 1080i: Need for Speed: Carbon, NHL 2K7, Resistance: Fall of Man and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. Each attempt led to the downscaling of the resolution, unfortunately.

Conversely, Microsoft's Xbox 360 unit upscales 720p to 1080i so long as the television supports the said format as the console itself does not support 720p.

» I see...

So, if your old TV doesn't support 720P, which means it doesn't support 1080i and 1080P too, your game will be downscale? But doesn't everybody knows this already? Are is QJ just being stupid?

In other word: You can't upscale a game if the TV doesn't support it.

And if the TV doesn't support it, it will downscale too. So what's the point of the comparasion here? That without an HD TV, your console will downscale and with an HDTV, your console will upscale? Doesn't everybody knows this already?

There are a great number of TV's that support 480i/p and 1080i but not 720p, mostly eary gen CRT/RPTV HDTV's. To clarify for the poster above who doesn't seem to understand the original post: if your TV is incapable of displaying 720p, you cannot upscale 720pgames to 1080i, this is something the xbox360 does. My TV for example only supports 480p and 1080i, the xbox360 upscales all the games (which are natively 720p) to 1080i to match my display. The PS3 will not upscale at all and will in fact downscale to 480p rather than displaying it in 1080i. This will no doubt piss people off as it was not widespread and I'm sure people with older TV's will be royally pissed when they fire up Resistance and have to run it in 480p and have it look like a PS2 game.

» hmm

isnt upscaling to 1080i still downscaling it to 520p? 720p would be 1440i if I'm not mistaken.

» hmm

mistaken yes .. the i stands for interlaced which does not change the geometry of the picture 1080i has approx 1080 vertical lines, 1080p has the same number of vertical lines, the difference is that two passes/phases are needed for the interlaced picture to be presented, where as the progressive (p) picture requires only one pass/phase.

» wow

» Umm

as a side point nobody should be using 1080i if they have 720p anyway as 720p looks better.

» WOW, idiots

What the hell is this guy talking about the XBOX 360 doesnt support 720P it upsacles it to 1080i, is he a retard 720p is the aimed resolution for all xbox 360 games.

» yea

Exactly what I was thinkin, what is QJ saying?

» let's make this clear

1080i and 1080p are the same resolution, the i meaning interlaced (half the screen drawn at a time 60 times per second resulting in a 30fps picture) while p means the whole screen drawn 60 times per second.

1080i/p > 720p > 480p/i as far as res is concerned

*debatable that 720p looks better than 1080i for small/fast moving objects

As for QJ's article, it has become clear that the PS3 will not upscale 720p games to 1080i/p. If your television scales inputs (newer HDTVs, most fixed res displays ie. lcd/dlp/plasma displays)

However, many older CRT HDTVs support 480i/p and 1080i. Many of these TVs, including some of Sony's own, are only able to scale the signal coming from it's internal tuner. They are not able to scale the signal coming from other inputs (the ones a PS3, 360, or Wii will be using). This means people with these TVs will have to play their PS3 games at 480p which is not an HD resolution.
