Tutorial Alert: Installing YDL and VLC on your PlayStation 3 |
Ó
Thanks to Taimoor, we found out about a new tutorial for PS3 users to get even more out of their system. Over at the T-Break Forums, Solid has written a rather in-depth tutorial about installing Yellow Dog Linux and VLC Media Player on your PlayStation 3.The tutorial has everything, from locations to download the applications you'll need, screenshots to serve as reference for installation, and a step-by-step guide to putting it all together. You will need a DVD-R or two to use the tutorial, as well as a USB keyboard and mouse to get things going, since you'll be burning a distributable version of YDL v5.0 and doing some mighty computing on your PS3 when you're done. All you have to do is read the instructions and you should be on your way.
As an added bonus, Solid's also put up a tutorial for installing SNES9X, an SNES emulator, just in case you needed even more reason to check out some gaming nostalgia. As for finding games, we'll leave that up to your supreme hacking skills.

some useful information, instead of PS3 bashing.
i just did this, then i go to QJ.NET, and i see the tutorial i just did... =.= well i got th ydl already but the vlc part is the one i did.
snes for ps3 = VC for free... MMMMMMMMMM FREE
so i got a question , what exactly is the vlc media player, could you play vob from ripped dvd's from this player, what types of media does it play?
EVERYTHING
Anyone tried playing x264 encoded movies in mkv containers? I have stacks on disc, would be really handy to use my PS3 for these.
Anyways, where the hell do I find the appropriate version of YDL? A link would be handy, thanks!
ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/yellowdog/iso/yellowdog-5.0-phoenix-20061208-PS3.iso
does that mean no more having to wait hours to covert from vob to mp4, woohoo. So with linux, it can access an external hdd via a usb port, oh please say yes, cuz i am going to do this today
It's buggy, and drop's frames. Sometimes the sound does not play smoothly, and video is very unstable.
I have a 500GB external drive hooked up to my PS3 and play HD video thru VLC all the time. It rocks.
How in the hell do i even watch the tutorial?
