Tretton: PS3 price is a challenge but content will justify it |

Sony U.S. boss Jack Tretton admitted that the price point of their high-end Sony PlayStation 3 game console is "a challenge," but he says that the content of games in the platform will show gamers that the machine is worth every penny of the US$ 600 that it charges."There's no question that that's a challenge. Hopefully content helps to deliver the proof points and the justification behind the cost of the machine," he says.
The justification that Sony is talking about comes in the form of more than 15 exclusive titles that they promise will exhibit the power of the PS3. Among these are Heavenly Sword, Lair and MLB: The Show. It can be recalled that in the not so distant past, Sony dominated the game industry on the strength of big franchises running exclusively under its banner. Things have been shaken up a bit, though, as former stalwart franchises Devil May Cry and Grand Theft Auto have opted to develop for rival Xbox 360 as well.
Analysts say that the decision of Sony's management to add a Blu-ray player to the PS3 is what makes the console so expensive not only for consumers but also for the company. Experts say that with every PS3 unit sold, Sony loses US$ 150. It was a gambit they were willing to take in the belief that the PS3 is the key to the proliferation of their high-definition format.
And even though Sony registered big losses in the last fiscal quarter, analysts aren't counting the PS3 out just yet. They say that once the chips and other PS3 components become less expensive, there should be a rate drop, which may attract more buyers. This, coupled with the launches of the next fiscal year, may be the spark plug that Sony is looking for.

The only way to offset bad news is to try and generate some positive press. They have done a fairly decent job of that considering the circumstances.

Regarding the exclusives I dont think you should worry about that Sony has lost its last exclusives with DMC that mistake will not happen again and if it does i dont think it will matter from now on.
About Halo 3, a true giant I might say but the future of a console is not decided by just one huge game. I dont need to remind you of MGS4 , GT5 and God of War 3 which are just three games which can easily measure up and even surpass any Halo game Microsoft can throw out (and please dont give me that crab about not being able to compare these games because I am talking about Software sales and gaming experience like gameplay-graphics-story-sound etc.. which we all know who the winners are already... exept if you are blind that is).
What about the longevity of the two consoles..Did you think about that? I quess not..How long do you think the already 2 year old 360 can keep up with the ps3? another 1 or 2 years? Motorstorm which was a release game made the xbox's whole year games look like s- hit purden my lunguage.
So I think you should start revising and stop Breathing through the filter called Microsoft and think what is worth thinking about...your money!!! because the way I see it I will pay 600 bucks for another 7 years at least. If it doesnt work out then fine I will still have my blu-ray player.
Dont get me wrong, I understand that you try to justify your purchase but as soon as your realise the real facts the better.
PS: I have both a 360 and a ps3 at home.Wii...lots of fun...but not for me...

I do think with all the big titles coming out in fall for PS3 a nice $50-$100 cut may be feasible and convince potential buyers.

Look I understand th@ the price point of the PS3 is a bit steep 4 most people, myself included (it's £425 in the UK).
I also understand th@ a lot of people have 2 settle 4 a 360 because the price of a PS3 is 2 high. No doubt Sony lost a few sales of the PS3 because of this cost but I think a li'l price drop b4 christmas will c those who were still happy with there PS2 deciding 2 upgrade, I don't really care tho as u already know I got my PS3 for £180.
All I do care about is th@ things pick up in 2008, I never played Oblivion b4 so wow don't need another 4 a few months well maybe some Tekken would'nt go amiss. I also think Sony does well by Pricing there own game's about £10 cheaper (Motorstorm,Res istance) than 3rd party..........thanx.
By the way I remember MONTHS ago th@ the XBot's were crowing about how the 360 has sold 10 million unit's...........well hasn't it still only sold about 10 million units? Wh@ happened? Did the competition release there consoles, we'll just have 2 c how this pan's out eh.
I also think its funny th@ the games most XBots go on about are Gears of War th@ looked good but was over b4 it began or Halo 3 which looks like Halo but with a new grenade.
The PS3 is far from perfect but is @ least trying 2 b versitile with Flow, Little Big Planet, Home, Linux, free online etc & the next-gen media format (used 4 games not just movies), a motion sensor pad th@ u say is ***** but looks good 4 Warhawk. So Xbots have your fun but the day will come when u admit 2 yourself th@ u been had.
