Tretton on PSN charges, Sony's E3 offerings |

There has been a lot of talk floating around about Sony's plans to start charging for PSN. According to SCEA CEO Jack Tretton, they're not going to do that until they come up with new features to justify it.
"As far as subscription services are concerned, we're really proud of the service that we offer the consumer for free," said Tretton in the latest episode of GTTV. "There's no question that if we can come up with a compelling experience that will warrant an investment from consumers that that would be something we would consider."
"We already feel we brough a lot of value to the consumer... but until we feel we have something, like PlayStation Move, that justifies an investment, we aren't going to come out with half cocked technology or product offerings."
Tretton also enticed PS3 and PSP owners to watch out for this year's E3. Apparently GDC was just a small taste. Sony's keeping the big guns holstered for the yearly gaming expo. "I'm saving the batter for E3. We will absolutely bring the heat," he said.
So, is a Killzone 3 reveal part of Sony's trump cards? Tretton wouldn't confirm it, but he did promise that a third game in the franchise is a no-brainer.
"We own Guerrilla [Games] and they did a great job on Killzone 1 and 2. I don't know whether you'll see announcements about it [at E3], but I can promise you a Killzone 3."

you might get suprised by the fees, maybe sony will enforce tos, and be watching for undersgae players in a ma rated game, that would be worth it as well, im sick of squeeky ass voices scream over the mic all the time,..skip skip skip x's 10

i think this move will be the reason they are looking for to start charging, as i said i dont mind, if they gonna offer REAL services,.

he's saying that 'move' is something new that is worth paying. in relation to psn, he's saying that their needs to be some sort of worth or justification for them to charge the user base for a 'new' psn.

They better keep their current services free. I'll be seriously pissed if they start charging for just online play.IMO one of the ps3s biggest trump cards on the xbox is the free online.
That said, if they did come up with some awesome additional service I coud subscribe to, then I'd consider it. I just dont want it forced on me.

One of the big ups PSN has over Live is the free to use thing. That's also one of the main reasons I chose PS3 over the Xbox. If PSN makes it like a subscription account and non-subscription account then it seems fair. For subscription, add in those new ideas, for non, keep it the way it is. No reason to take away our free multiplayer or free access to the PSN shop.
I guess we'll need to wait and see what they do. I just hope they don't dig their grave with such a decision.

If PSN does became a pay service, or at the least have a premium version of the current service, I would pay for it if I had a job. Hoping, this summer, I will get one.

Traditionally, services like the ones found in Live have always been free. Only recently have we seen changes, probably prompted by Live gold's success, to the consumer-friendly model of free multiplayer service.
There truly is no legitimate reason to charge for basic friend list functionality and matchmaking services. There is very little bandwidth in use (compared to actually hosting a game server) and to top things off, xbox live is also ad-supported.
I made the mistake of paying for a year of Live. I got a massive discount on it, but even still, now that it's coming to an end, I feel ripped off pretty badly. It's not a mistake I'll make twice, and since many people ARE completely happy paying for Live, it just means that the PS3 is a far more attractive console for multiplayer for me.
