TrettonSony exec Jack Tretton implies that Sony's recent sales figures in North America are proof of the company's brand power in the territory. GamesIndustry reports that this is in reference to the six-year old PlayStation 2, which sold 1.4 million units in December, a figure that GamesIndustry says is much better than the sales of the next-gen consoles of Microsoft and Nintendo.

Tretton had this to say: "If there was ever any doubt about the power of the PlayStation brand in the US, the December NPD data should quickly quell it."

Looking at the NPD data, the PSP sales rose by 130 percent from the previous month. Sony also managed to sell 497,000 PS3s last December, bringing the total to around 687,000. Tretton is as upbeat as always about the performance of the PS3:

Not only did consumers drive records for PlayStation 3, they also validated the excellent value represented by PlayStation 2 and the entertainment versatility of PSP. These sales figures bode very well for the company heading into 2007

As Kotaku">Brian Crecente of Kotaku has said, it looks like all three companies won last holiday season.

# The Playstation Is a Very Strong Brand Name..Guest 2007-01-12 22:33
Our Fanboy Talk In The Forums Like this is one thing,But the Average Consumer Thinks Otherwise..

They Dont Know or Care About Specs,They Know that Playstation is the Biggest Brand Name....so they Go After it..

Microsoft will Have a Hard time Taking That Strong-brand Name from People Heads....Until now,MS provided no Reason for PS2 Owners to Sacrifice their PS2 games and Convert to a 360.

I think Most People will Buy a 360 as Second Choice alongside the PS3 when it Gets Cheaper, same for the Wii..

Next Christmas 2007 Will Be truly One to Look for....With All the Major Software Coming,It will be Interesting to See What Happens.

i'll only be interested when this is about ps3 sales beating the competition. this is just pr spin, since sony should be in a position to talk about the great success of the ps3, not the ps2. instead, nintendo kicked their head in this christmas, and microsoft built on their success with the highest next-gen console sales.

yeah i know, good news for the playstation brand with the ps2, but that's not going to be enough on it's own to help the ps3, and like it or not, the competition (microsoft and nintendo) have successfully chipped away at the playstation brand and mindshare.

yeah, christmas will be a big test for all three this year, but we will see the signs long before then, and so sony better get a move on or else.

Some say that sales of the Psp increased after the unrestricted version of Popstation was released.

Nintendo had a very strong brand name with nes and snes and sony was able to take over the gaming industry in 1 generation. All Im hoping is that Microsoft does not get that title this time around, I hope either the ps3 keeps it or ninty takes it back. When ms decides to make more games that are not shooters then I will change my mind.

Now you're saying consumers don't care about specs? Maybe because it's becoming common knowledge the PS3 is 2005 hardware released in 2006? Even with the unwarrented hype heavy Playstation name, consumers want the product's capabilities to speak for themselves. PS3 just cannot do that now so sony needs to constantly fall back on the two previous sucessful consoles.

Yes keep saying the PS3 will sell well because the old consoles did. Does it mention the PS3 did everything completely different than the PS2?

If anything is a contradiction it would be that name of yours Mr. Common Sense.

First off it's easy to say that the hardware specs are not becoming common knowledge, seeing as the average joe can't even hook up a wireless router without trouble.

Secondly people are using the PS2 to explain why others shouldn't rush to judgement on the PS3. The PS2 took a year to really show people what it had to offer, and it's looking to be the same with the PS3.

The system is still a very sound one and many people believe it's amazing. For you to claim every bit of hype it recieved was unwarrented is wrong.

The PS3 as the title suggests is a step above the PS2, which already it has proven to us it is with all the things it can do.

Take That!
