Tretton: no backwards compatibility boosts PS3 game sales

Sony once explained the reason that the lack of backwards compatibility for the 40GB version of the PlayStation 3 was because of cost reduction. While this is true, apparently it wasn't the only reason.

According to GameSpot, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton explained to the Wall Street Journal that the decrease in manufacturing costs isn't that dramatic. However, Sony hopes that taking out the option to play PlayStation 2 games on the console will lead to more sales of PlayStation 3 games.

Tretton further added that research suggested that the feature won't be missed because consumers who buy the console probably already own a PlayStation 2.

Who does not have a PS2? He is right, the PS3 was not even able to play PS2 games as well as the PS2 anyways. It is a good choice and I commend Sony for getting rid of something that cost us all money that most do not need. If you do not have a PS2 then you probably have no PS2 games. What do you need backwards compatibilty for?

Well, I had a PS2, I did sold it with some Games I didnt like anymore for about 150$, so my PS3 did cost me 150$ less. I use the Backwards Compatibility because there a lot of great Games on PS2 like Burnout Revenge...

But its choice out there, for 100$ more, you get the backwards compatibility, bigger Harddrive, Extra Pad and 2 Games.. so for me the 40Gb Version is bull***** anyway.

Okey.. well, for me bc is one of the most imoprtant features

.. seeing as I have lots of ps2 games.. and no fuctioning ps2.

it broke down at the ps3 realse here in europe.

and besides it's not like they are going to munufacture

the ps2 much longer.. and 5 years from now people might

wanna play their old ps2 games but can't, becuase of no bc.

I love my games, I have lots of ps1 and ps2 games..

and I want to be able to play them, without having too

emulate them. on PC

60GB was the best; near perfect bc, nice price, wifi, everything you need (card slots, usb, etc), and enough harddrive to keep you satisfied until you get a bigger HDD, nuff said....

I want to play my old games without having a stack of old consoles with no where to put them. I can see in 50 years I might want to pull out the oldies but goodies to show the great grand kids. By then I will probably be laughed at for showing cheap 50 gigabyte discs and need a hdmi to hyper connection converter for their 1000000p HV ( holographic vision set ).

Give it another 6 months and emulation on the pc will be at a point where we wont need a ps2 anymore. That day I`m looking forward to personally. Sure I love my ps2 to death it was a bloody great console, but I`d love to have the extra space for other things more.

Emulation of the ps1 (which has been at 100% for quite some time now) did away with my ps1, with me just keeping the controller to use through a usb adapter.

Despite this though, Sonys decision to do it to boost ps3 sales is just plain stupid. Just like they assumed that rumble in the controller "wasn`t a next gen feature that the public didn`t want" to quote them from back at the start of the year. Now we all know what happened with that.

What if your PS2 broke? Would you want to shell out another 120 bucks just for that when you already own a PS3?

I think it's a bad move by Sony to disable the backwards compability just to boost the sales.

The least they could've done was keeping the good old 60gb version.

One simple solution, Ebay. They always have PS3's and 60GB versions, if you want a PS3 with BC get it on ebay. Thats where i got mine for cheap and it was the best move i did.

Its not like they are completely getting rid of BC entirely 80Gb version still has one.
