Tretton assures a PS3 bloom come May

sure to get it right, this time? - Image 1Here's a bit of sunshine for all you PS3 fans out there. Sony will reportedly be able to push through with the shipment of 2 million more PS3 units to North America by the end of March. Their goal being to significantly ease the supply shortages by May.

"Our goal is to fill shelves across the United States. Our goal is not to have empty shelves, it's to have full shelves. If we have empty shelves, that's one less customer who could have bought a PlayStation 3," says SCEA chief exec Jack Tretton. He also debunks the reports that there are stacks of unsold units across North American retails stores by saying that there are still, in fact, some areas still without stock even 3 months after the launch.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Dunham, PlayStation editor for IGN, says his piece on the matter:

The PS3's biggest opponent right now is itself. It's really just competing against its own PR... The PS3's problem right now is there have been a lot of broken promises. It has a lot of things to overcome, but the brand name, the franchises and good exclusives... all should generate great interest.

Regardless of what other obstacles there may be, what's important at this point is for Sony to hold up to their word this time, that they really deliver those stocks. Because really, there are still more fans waiting to get their hands on a PS3.

Shortage?! ha, Sony wishes

That's bs, I saw PS3's for sale in a couple of places in the first week of January. I really haven't heard about any PS3 shortages, mostly just Wii's. This seems more like wishful thinking.
by - 2007-02-28 00:49:59
This shouldn't be difficult.

I think it will be easy for them to stock the shelves full. I mean seeing that no one will be buying them that is. I think the reason that some places are "still without stock even 3 months after the launch" is because the retailers do not want to buy them. My local gamestop refuses to except trade-ins! They would not let me trade it in, they said they had to return most of the (new) ones they had back to their supplier because they were not selling.
by - 2007-02-28 01:26:00
that's odd...

I haven't seen PS3's anywhere since launch, but I see a lot of Wii's
by - 2007-02-28 02:45:06
Liar

Your Fucin#$ liar ... In game stop online they are sold out and in amazon the sell out as soon as it become available
by CosmosStopper - 2007-02-28 03:21:29
Fanboyisim...

I found several at my local Walmart. The salesclerk says they are very hard to sell right now. The gamecrazy and gamestop down the street do not have any though. My friend at Gamecrazy says they won't buy used ones, so I see a bit of truth here. Way to get the fanboys fired up and ready to flame though!

Bull Sh*t

There are no shortages of PS3's - in the UK anyway - u can pre-order them anywhere: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-Console-Premium-Version/dp/B0007SV734/ref=br_lf_m__1_1_ttl/026-7764118-9121239?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&s=videogames http://www.game.co.uk/lowdown.aspx?lid=7068&cm_sp=PS3-_-merchandising-_-wfpreorderltd I'm getting mine when/if more ppl buy - not worth buying if not many ppl on PSN.
by smokeelaa - 2007-02-28 05:58:24
Definitely no shortages

I have walked into multiple circuit citys and best buys in the Metro DC area and have seen PS3s on the shelf. Definitely no signs of a shortage.
by - 2007-02-28 06:06:17
Hmm if you have to register on PSN to get the free film ?

Trouble is how you gonna know how many people are actually on PSN ? For example just in the UK alone 500,000 people who want the free! film that comes with the PS3 have to register onto the PSN, so are they counted ? also if PSN is free does that mean One person can just open multiple accounts ? which again would cause confusion..
by - 2007-02-28 06:48:03
a but...

you are registering your ps3 serial number with your account not the account itself. There are 500,000 copiesof the film for europe as there are only going to be 250,000 or so available in UK at launch.

no shartage in Jax, Fl

if there is a shortage problem, jax fl is not suffering from it. every walmart, bestbuy, eb, gamestop, rhino, and circuit city have stacks of them. i only know this becuase i just went to everylocation this past week looking for a wii
by - 2007-02-28 07:24:58
There is a shortage

A shortage on buyers that is. My local walmart has 3 on the shelf tat have been there since launch. the wii however is still hard to find. There are plenty of 360's available though. The fact is that it isnt selling as well as sony wants it to. Sony is saying they have shipped one million but if other areas are like mine the only people buying them are the retailers. If the sales don't improve some retailers may refuse to carry them.
by - 2007-02-28 07:57:58
Not here in muskegon

I work at Bestbuy and I'll tell you right now we have no problem selling all our ps3's we sell all of them almost as fast as we get them. I guess it depends on the area you live in. same with the Wii's they sell out fast as well.
by - 2007-02-28 08:14:27
Seriously

I didn't know that one city or locale constituted the entire US, Japan, Canada, and all areas already with a PS3 release. Morons.
by - 2007-02-28 08:27:36
Stupid ps3 fanboys

Tretton's a fool, and so are all you PS3 homos who keep rating down posts with THE TRUTH of the matter. http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/02/12 Pay attention.

Don't just look at the shelf

WHen I bought my PS3 I talked to a few retailers who guaranteed me they had plenty of PS3s. They said however, that they sell them quite often but are able to replace them as necessary. Did you see 3 PS3s at your local walmart for 3 months? Probably not, they just only keep 3 on the shelf. They probably stock 10-20 and restock the shelf when one sells. It's logical seeing as how the PS3 is selling at pace with 360 right now, which seems to also have a constant stock on the shelf.
by - 2007-02-28 09:22:55
What ever you have to tell yourself

To justify your purchase is fine. But dont try and sugar coat the fact that the PS3 has very low demand right now. And if you want to compare it with the 360, compare it in the relevent timeframe. 360s were sold out for months as fast as they went on the selves. I could have walked into walmart on xmas eve and bought a PS3. Even laymen are talking about how noone wants the PS3. Its common knoledge.
by - 2007-02-28 10:01:24
Know the facts Nuttchugging Xbots and Plumber Boys

There is a reason that the 360 was sold out for months after launch. They brought in new systems the same way every console b4 it did. Nintendo is doing now with the WiiCube.....they ship them in on a boat. The PS3 is flown in on weekly charters....weekly. That is why you can find them regularly. Sony said that they were going to do this. I applaud them for it. The PS3 does not even have much software yet...but it will.
by - 2007-02-28 10:10:14
Not to mention $5+ for 10yr old games....boy you Plumber Boys love to bend over for Mario

When you finally get your WiiCube...you will be happy. Here is a prediction 4u and all other Plumber Boys out there.....ready? In one to two years you will finally realize that you paid $250 dollars to Ninty for a GameCube with a motion controller. Your games will look so dated and old...not just grafix, no AI, massive deformable environments, realtime weather, aging, time etc. (the new Star Wars is just the tip of the iceberg. Face it Plumber Boys....you have been douped. Meanwhile, I will be playing true next gen games on my PS3. And Xbots will be playing true next gen games with multiple discs on the 360. In closing Plumber Boys..... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa $250 dollars for a motion controller...and people say that Sony is ripping off the customer. Pathetic

360 Sells well and stocks efficiently

Idiots of course there will always be 360 stock not because of the way sales go but because of a thing called efficiency. Its been out a year longer and it can now cover supply and demand, outside of Japan it is the biggest selling next gen console and stocks will be available now matter how many it sells Gears of War helped prove that point...

You got my homework done yet McFly?

You're caught in the past, McFly, when sony actually could deliver promises and sell systems. We've got to get you back. Back to the future!
by - 2007-02-28 13:17:28
PS What?

Just an observation... I was in Blockbuster the other day and looking at the games section. I noticed a PS3 section had just been put in. Something was afoul though...there were only five games to pick from and NONE had been checked out. What exactly are you folks playing on the PS3? I'm guessing Resistance will be on-line...but is there any thing else!?!? Is the PS3 a $600 Resistance machine?

Man, that was funny....hello....McFly, ur shoes untied...whap....don't be so gullible McFly. By the way the PS2 was the most hyped system ever b4 the PS3. Sony does it, and it works. Can u blame them 4 doing it again? Remember that Saddam was buying up all of the PS2's so that he could use the uber powerfull EE and GS for missle guidance? Remember?

PS3 and "shortages"

There really are shortages. The thing is that the selling rate isn't as high. Majority of the USA doesn't have any PS#'s, while there is still a big selection of cities that have a lot of PS3s. Dont forget all the great games that will be coming out in the future. I think they will need a lot of PS3s to sell then since people will be able to afford them by then. Sony is doing something smart by preventing shortages so when the big games come out, a lot more PS3s will sell.
by damonous - 2007-02-28 21:45:37
Maybe not sold out, but scarce

At multiple Best Buys, Targets, + WalMarts in my area, I really haven't ever seen more than 2-3 PS3's on the shelf at a time (even now). Obviously, the retailers could just be keeping the high-ticket items in the back; but that's usually not the case at Best Buy. Sometimes I'm in my local Best Buy a couple times a week (looking for BluRay's, HD-DVD's etc) and I'll notice that where there were 2 PS3's a day or so earlier, there is then only 1. ---No, this isn't scientific. But, it seems to me that (considering the price) PS3's are moving steadily. As for Gamestops, EB's, etc: I don't trust those guys as far as they can be thrown. Let's face it: if Sony's losing the most money on PS3, Microsoft's losing a bit (maybe) on Xbox 360, I'll bet Nintendo's not losing much (if any) on Gamecube2 (aka Wii). So, guess which console manufacturer is probably more capable of providing a selling incentive? --That's right: Wii. Next up: MS. So, when the Gamestop/EB boys are saying that 10-yr-old-graphics Wii Bowling is the hottest thing since Cameron Diaz, one has to wonder: are they just lame-o no-respect gamers, or getting paid/spiffed to sell Wiis? I know personally of no hardcore, self-respecting gamers that want to own a Wii.

stupid

This shows how out of touch sony is with gamers and retailers. The stores in Indianapolis have had them sitting on shelves collecting dust early january
by - 2007-03-01 11:29:28
Confirmed in Indy

Yeah, I can walk into any target, Walmart, Best Buy, CC, Fry's right now and get a PS3. This was the case for over a month as I was on my Wii Hunt (as a supplement to X360-my wife only plays Wii sports). Funny, but I was all hyped to buy a PS3. As soon as they confirmed the price, I was like NO FRIGGING WAY. I've purchased every *sucessful* console system at launch since back in the PS1 days. I'm pretty hard core. I spend most of my disposable income on games/consoles/etc...but there was no way in heck I was buying one. XBOX360 is the perfect console for me. Awesome connectivity, demo downloads, free chat w/out being in the game, ROCKING controller, great graphics, etc...
by - 2007-03-01 16:54:41
I don't know

If you really think about it, why would they lie about having shortages?... would seem kind of stupid. You don't impress people by saying we've sold 2,000,000/2,000,000, you impress people by saying you've sold 4,500,000 already. (So yeah, they could be lying, lol.) And as for the wii, once again same back at you, I've seen alot for sale. ;) Seems like stupid crap.
by - 2007-03-01 17:05:49
FAILURE

I can go to any local store and find all three quite easily these days, so it's nothing to gawk at you crazy people, unless you can't get one because you're a PHYSCOMANIC.,
by - 2007-03-01 17:10:36
D:

Wow, it's called innovation, your comment on the other hand is a retardation and bastardation of the thought process of a human being, congratulations, you know... nothing! Mind you Sony goes for the long run though. Anyhow the Wii doesn't look that bad, but I do like "My goldfish can outpower the Wii." Anyhow have fun gaming, can't believe I'm on this forum atm actually, got sidetracked as always.
by damonous - 2007-03-01 20:53:33
Not gawking; maybe crazy

If I want to gawk, I'll just look at the PS3 or the 360 on my equipment rack. It probably does make me 'crazy' to have bought 360 just to play Test Drive, but thats another story. Having both now, it all the more makes me want to see Sony win (the interface is that much cleaner). So, I am curious to check in the stores every now and then what the sales appear to be. --Because the bozos at Gamestop, etc. are hardly a trustworthy source to get sales information from.
