Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama has said that the next story-driven entry in the franchise will be more open than XIII, the linearity of which has invited flak from some quarters.

Toriyama chalked up FFXIII's lack of familiar JRPG elements like explorable towns to his strengths in making story-driven games as well as the difficulties in developing for HD consoles:

Personally, the Final Fantasys that I have worked on have been very story-driven, so in terms of the development I wanted to, of course, use my personal strengths which where those.

In the Final Fantasys on previous non-high definition consoles, we were able to kind of take everyone's ideas and include them in the games

I call it a bento box system, where you have all of the different little things in there. So we had minigames or towns were you were able to talk to all of the townspeople. But with the HD console you're not really able to do that because it takes so long to develop.

We had to consider the amount of time it took to create the game engine, which we built from scratch, as well, and so with that additional time included we had to decide what we could and couldn't do.

Now that the technology is there, though, these familiar elements might show up again in the franchise's next main entry. If not, hey, they can always just release it as DLC.

The next time you see a Final Fantasy, we might be able to pack in more of those elements that existed in the past. And I also think that a game doesn't need to have all of those items in the future. We can create additional downloadable content for people to add, too. It doesn't have to come with that game itself.

It looks like Versus XIII will have a proper world map so I guess that's a start.

You see.. There have not been any
"world map" since final fantasy 9. That was not what this article was about.

I think that they are talking more about Exlorable towns, interaction with the people around you and minigames.

We all that Versus will be more free and open. But that does not meen that it will have a "world wap". This is PS3..
Is more likely that its open in the same way as FFXII but without any tranisitions between the places.

So they don't listen to critics, but they sure are addressing one of the larger complaints.

i think they were saying it was one thing that was left out in the game due to the fact that thet were making a game engine from scratch. and adding towns like that would make the game even longer to develop

Sounded like a honest answer and a credible one.

it just sounds like a run around answer as he did not want to say "developing for 360 didn't allow us to put in cities"

All the time wasted on 360's crap version could have been used to make the PS3 version legendary....or at least have towns and probably would have come out way sooner.

You have to consider, if they took more time to make the PS3 version more "legendary", people would instead start complaining about how long it takes.

Square can release god incarnate and people would still complain about it.

Its time to get Yoshinori Kitase back in the directors seat, this guy is full of excuses, none of which are acceptable. Square could pull off another good Final Fantasy title, they just have the wrong people behind the wheel.

Well, FF13 isn't BAD, but, it could have been much better...

I've talked to a lot of people that like the whole run forward in a straight line, fight monsters, boss, get a cutscene, repeat type game play. I do get enjoyment exploring cities...still working on finish it but I hope they at least let us look around eden.

FF13 has pretty good direction in character development and gameplay but the linear part is the main drawback. I do like how they polished everything pretty well but it just lacks the great open world gameplay. I hope they go the same route with polish and all voice acting next time around with an open maps and a lot of characters in cities, towns and in the world interact with.

The next Final Fantasy (XIV) will be immensely non-linear and explorable.

From interviews we know that Versus XIII will have a real old-school overworld map. They are just trying to get it to look right with the characters.

As far as FFXV goes, I hope it is similar to FFXII's world. That game had a great balance of exploration and non-linearity

Thanks for the incomplete game Square. I always think well at least the next FF cant be any worse than the last one. But sadly I am always wrong.

maybe FF13 doesnt have explorable towns but its still a great milestone, their new engine has created one of the best looking games ever and the story, characters and battles are also great as ever
