This can't be good: SIXAXIS seizes up |
Ó
We're hoping it's just a software thing that can be resolved with an update, but that's still speculating. A thread at the NeoGAF forums is running live with reports of SIXAXIS literally seizing up in PS3 games. For one reason or another, the game will not respond to controller input, as summarized by GamerReports: "From time to time, the SIXAXIS pad will literally lock in one direction for a few seconds, and will not stop until a button is pressed or the camera is moved."
GamerReports calls it directional lock. The NeoGAF member who started the thread calls it "SIXAXIS epilepsy". We call it worrisome.
Our presumption that it's potentially just a Bluetooth communication problem between the SIXAXIS and the PS3 comes from the NeoGAF forums as well, where one member suggests a possible, albeit temporary and slightly inconvenient fix. In his case, the seizure crops up when the system is started remotely - the controllers are not connected to the PS3 via USB.
He suggests to start the system with the controller plugged, then unplug it - it worked for him (suddenly, the SIXAXIS retailing without USB cables doesn't look too good).
If that's true, then it's just a communication problem at remote startup. If it was hardware issues, the problem would register even after this fix, we think. Hopefully Sony's working on a more permanent (or at least convenient) fix. People at NeoGAF are split between their opinion of Bluetooth, and not just with its use in SIXAXIS - some experiences register it as a curse, others say they have absolutely no problem with their Bluetooth-enabled devices.

I swear this problem is true. When I play NFS... I try turn but it stays going straight, or when I try to press the "speed breaker" button, it doesnt press, it just keeps on going... some days i have this problem and some days I don't I still don't know why it happens. I hope they clear things up soon.
Oh my god.. This is definetly true... I was playing Resistance right? Online... And i kept trying to shoot but i just kept running forward and i got nailed i died at least 5 times before it responded and i had to make up for all the kills / deaths i missed....Definetly a problem that needs to be addressed.
Want to see the effects of a bad bluetooth connection? Here's Skylark chatting on IRC using a Bluetooth keyboard with a poor connection:
[2006-08-22 18:36:42] I try nooooott to breathe around smooookeers, yes
[2006-08-22 18:36:46] *****ing Bluetooth
Notice the repeated characters. When Bluetooth stuff loses its signal, it seems to just repeat the last good input...
Hope this doesn't happen to me, but it hasn't happened so far with either of my Sixaxis controllers. I normally have my controllers plugged in when I'm not playing though (I have a Sony digital camera I use the cable from for my extra).
thats why M$ stayed with IR... BT is crappy and is sensitive with interferance... im afraid to say that there is no software fix for that... piece of junk... i'll take rumble anytime over sixaxis
It has happened to me twice and my friend once. I was playing resistance and all of a sudden, I looked straight up and turned to the right. My character spin 6 or 7 times. I shook the controller and kept pressing buttons. It finally went away. I bet this is a BT communication problem. I hope they fix it soon.
I have had the same problem with my Wii. Im playing Zelda and as I move the analog stick from up to right, he just keeps going up until I let it go back to middle, and then a new direction.
Only connection between the Wii and PS3 is bluetooth...
Updates can solve this problem, companies do it with cell phones. I am glad they used bt because I can use any bt headset for voice unlike ir. The sixaxis is growing on my, I would still like rumble, but thats another story.
This has happened to my on RFoM more times than I can count. I didnt know what to think until I read the article. Count me as one!
The Wiimote is BT too, but I'm not seeing anything about this.
Wouldn't Sony have picked up such an obvious problem in beta?
that sounds like a calibration issue +/
It's just a bad controller. Go get a new controller.
Bluetooth really is sensitive to interference like Hmmmm... said. I've used bluetooth headphones for a little over a year, and it doesn't take much to interfere with the connection. Someone using a microwave seems to be one of the biggest problems for me. But all in all, I love the technology. I'm glad Sony included support for BT on the PS3!
Well, yeah I have had problems with the controller sometimes too with Resistance. But luckily, it's kind of occasional. I think it might have to do with the fact I was playing a lot and it just didn't read the controls for a while. That and the fact the charge was getting kind of low. I know I wasn't having the problem with a larger charge, not sure if that would fix it(or if that USB suggestion in the article would).
My 360 doesnt have this problem. Another reason why PS3 is a piece of garbage...
Why does Sony insist on making the bunny cry? why? *caulks gun* Sony... where are you? Found you! *BANG* "Oh crap its just a PS3"
Oh well...
See what happens when your battery gets low.
So to fix it you need to plug it in each time it's turned on even though extra controllers don't come with a cable? Can they even call that a wireless controller? My XBOX 360 controllers have always worked great and I'm still on the first set of AA batteries after 6 months. At least when your game is ruined by a malfunctioning controller it won't affect your gamerscore because there isn't any!
God this is way to funny. So how do you all feel now? So like always sony trying to hard to make that dollar. How long did they have to get all the bugs out? What was that...360...works great and...Is...on top? Hell yeah!!! Please can Nintendo just die and be like sega? Wii what the hell is that? They came out with a new N64 wow! Now you can pay for all the games that sit around and collect dust. I hate old games. I love new games cause its just so much better. You play and old game for like 5 minutes and your like "Ill this sucks why did i get this for?" Who cares about old games?
The 360 controller uses 2.4ghz wireless not IR, and it does have a wireless headset.
No, the Twilight Princess issue is NOT a calibration issue...It does indeed have its own bluetooth issues...albeit not so much as the PS3 from what i've heard. Microsoft boy, stop ranting. You're supporting an 83 billion dollare overload who has done nothing but LOSE money in the console business. There are only two true 5 star game on both the 360 AND the Xbox and those are halo 1,2. And guess what? Those are only good as shooters. To all those little kids who think halo has an epic storyline, go play a real game, like ff4,6,9, or *****ing Xenogears. That might be a little above your reading level though.... =/
I have a 360 unfortunately and the AA batteries don't last nearly that long. At best a month or two months, and I don't play it that often unless I'm playing Halo on live. And Gamerscore is a really GAY feature, i may be the only one who notices that...So don't embarass yourself further...I'm already ashamed for owning an M$ console...
You are nub chocolate.
Yea it can possibly be fixed by software updates, but it can also be what is inside the controller. Take the cell phone I have right now. They changed the battery cover from metal to plastic, because of the interference it caused. Now wouldn%u2019t that be a slap in the face if there was a problem due to the manufacturing and the sixaxis controllers were recalled +(. Glad I'm still waiting till the price goes down and all the bugs are fixed.
You know you just listed games that are for the PSX and nothing for Playstation 2 or 3 right. Just thought I would let ya know there +P Every systems got it's perks. Just the problem with Sony is that they act like every systems got faults except theirs till release time. Besides, if your gonna talk epic story nonsence, I'd like to see how Blue Dragon does when it's released +D
ohhhhhhhhhh mmmmmmman that suckkkkkkkks......
Yep. I was playing RR7 when my car was possessed by the devil and smashed into a wall and lost gas. I thought it was the battery going dead so i switched controllers and recharged. (but the controller was still showing 2/3 full of power)
I guess there was a BT communication error like yall have suggested. I lost that race because of your crappy hardware/software Sony. This NEVER happened to me on a Wavebird, Wiimote, or X360 controller. YOU SUCK SONY!
First of all the FF series and all other RPG's are total crap...RPGs are the gayest by far. You want a good storyline? Go watch a movie.
The PS3 has problems. Alot of different ones from what Ive read. Im still going to have one when available, but I would expect the console to run flawless for the price, afterall my 360 does, and Ive had it for 10+ months with ZERO problems. So lets do a problem breakdown...
Games at 720 or 1080 suffer from slowdown (this is totally unacceptable considering the power of this console!!)
Bluetooth gets interrupted in games
Random Settings Corruption (reformat HDD)
HDTV downscaling for incompatible HDTV's
Looks like Sony has alot of work to do.
Low batteries donot effect the 360 controller at all. I have never experienced any miss comunications. Its sucks that BT is so sensitive. But im glad i read this becasue now i know why my bluetooth keyboard and mouse sometimes doubles up characters, or gets stuck on a key.
Nah its all rubbish... the main problem has been caused by people gettin hooked on the ps3 for more than 6 hours and doing all their daily tasks at the same time as playing... some retard got curry in his controller and some other reject spilled his drink over it.. sometimes ya also get human sweat solidified sludge around the buttons.. that stuff dont help. Could be worse! could be as bad as the wii mote!! thats some bad s**t at least your controllers work! imagine?! your about to end the level.. and the damn thing dont react in time on red steel and you have to do it all over again./....
Then sell your 360 and get over yourself FFS. I ashamed i spent 15 seconds replying to you.
So then you don't actually have any first hand experience. I own 60gb ps3 and have been playing it nonstop since i got it. I have had not one single problem with anything. My 360 is another story. Now on my second one(first one fried) I'm still having freezing issues and the dreaded "Disc is Unreadable" problem. Two hours after I got Gears I had that message. Dirty disc my @ss. I own four PS3 games, Tony Hawk,Ridge Racer 7,Call of Duty 3 and Resistance. Let me honestly tell you that these games run smooth. Tony Hawk has some hiccups but the other three are flawless. Resistance is awesome, especially online and there will never be a drop in frame rate no matter how much stuff is going on on-screen which is a heck of alot most of the time. They run much better than any 360 game I have. So before you go around all PS3 has problems, play one yourself (I recommend Resistance and Ridge Racer) and you will see that It kicks 360's butt and then you can actually make comment from first hand experience and not something you've read. ps Playstation 3 online kicks butt,so smooth.
Well, the things that I have read are on numerous sites that are credible ie. Gamespot, IGN, NY Times, and 3rd party devs even PS3 owners on forums! Its funny they all say the same thing. Maybe they are all full of ***** and your right!
I would love to tell you of these probs first hand, but Sony cant see to make enough to go around! BTW are you running these games on a HDTV? It would make sense they dont slowdown if they are running at 640x480 interlaced. I have 77 360 games and none of them run slow at 720p or 1080i. Reviewers and owners alike complain about poor framerates on the PS3, so Im calling bull*****.
You don't know anything about electronics. If a drink were spilled on it there could be a short and chips would blow and never work again. Dried sweat is not a conductor. BT not only is suseptable to interference, it causes it! My computer monitor gets messed up whenever somebody calls my cell phone with BT enabled. What's the advantage of that? $ony won't let you use any BT accesory, they'll make you buy theirs.
you scrolled down past some 30 comments just to say that, get a *****in life.

Except from the reviews I've read, Tony Hawk and CoD3 runs smoother on the 360.
Tony Hawk Review: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745182..
"It's certainly disappointing that the PlayStation 3 is so far behind the Xbox 360 game. Framerate issues are apparent at every other turn, and the lack of online play really hurts. Project 8 is a worthy game to pick up, just preferably not on this system."
CoD3 review: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/746/746533..
"Xbox moves at a smoother framerate with few hitches, while the PS3 version stutters often and boasts a more "washed out" color palette....Washed out colors, multiple collision issues, and a highly inconsistent framerate hurt what was a very good looking Xbox 360 game."
Resistance ought to run at a smooth 30fps since it was 1080p until weeks before launch (dropping to 720p). It looks good, but in a Time Splitters kind of way to me (for those who remember, TS was a a PS2 US launch game FPS running at a lsmooth 60fps). And Ridge Racer is, well, Ridge Racer!
By all means by happy with your PS3, but those games do not "kick the 360's butt", especially with games like GoW available.

You own 77 360 games! HA! Get a life. I mean, a collection is one thing but 77 is alot. And another thing, dont **** words like bull*****, we all know what you are saying, and just gets annoying.
Go buy a zune
Wow, one RPG for the 360. Say enchanted arms if you like d.ick. Yeah, i know all the games i mentioned were old...does that detract from their value? I think all of those games would be enhanced by next gen systems, especially Xenogears, but are stunning in their own right, even on PSX. I have high hopes for Blue Dragon, since M$ managed to pull in some developing talent on that title. But again, that's one game. Ps3? Mention ONE great game. None, ok. Ps2? Mention one great RPG? Many great games, but not a single hardcore RPG. Say FFX if you want your family to die. Xenosaga is all that comes to mind, even after its bloody rape by namco. I got the Wii for Zelda, and I'm sure at some point I'll own a Ps3 because of an RPG. Personally though...If Sony remade Xenogears...I'd buy five ps3s...
That is your opinion, and in my opinion, your opinion blows a fat c.ock. RPG elements are what MADE gaming. Action adventure / RPG games are where it all began. Other types of games are great, I love them all, but by far an excellent RPG owns everything else. If you really want a good story, you should really read some good literature, like 1984, American Psycho, or basically anything by Ray Bradbury. Movies like Star Wars, and LOTR are great, and yeah, I wish Xenogears could be an anime, but it still rivals many pieces of literature in game form. Some of the musical scores from Nobuo Uematsu, Susuma Hirawasa, and Yasunori Mitsuda are simply amazing, and can hold their own to with anything on the planet. Go smoke a bowl you *****ing fa.ggot.
I have more of a life in the IT world then youve been alive. You dont have anything to add to this topic but insults... go crawl back into your hole... trolls like you deserve to be shot. I have enough sense not to spend a game, thats why I invest in DL media, so in that sense 77 games is a drop in the bucket.
Hey Matt, your mother blows fat c0cks everyday and Im not whining like a b1tch about it... Adventure games like Zork,Kings Quest,Space Quest,AD&D RPGs,M&M where the starting point (before your time) and then the Dinks invaded RPGs and now they suck. Just like your mother Matt. Maybe you can take lessons from her and go smoke a c0ck, you homophobic closet *****.
Did typing that out gain you anything in life? Did you feel as if your Xbox 360 is any better after typing that?
Why do people always come into the comment section and start talking smack about the console in question?
Seriously, I don't know whether I am going to get a ps3 or an xbox yet, if there were priced the same I would get a ps3 but that is not the case. It sickens me to see people who are so hell bent on a console that they stop themselves from even thinking about buying the other console.
They take every oppurtunity they have to diss the console. Eg "WOW PS3 BLOWS BECAUSE ONE OF THEM SOMEWHERE DOESNT WORK GOOD".
Why does this always happen for video game consoles? You dont see ipod people going on other mp3 player's websites and talking trash.
You're retarded. Microsoft uses RF. And Bluetooth works fine, you're just using inferior hardware (ie: PS3/PC)
I'm not even going to bother pointing out all the errors in that post.
