Theseis for PS3 Cancelled Because of Costly Development? |
Ó
Rumor has it that Track7 Games' Theseis for the PS3 would be cancelled. The apparent reason? The game is too costly to develop. If backfence talks are to be believed, a representative apparently disclosed that Theseis for the PS3 is cancelled because of the high and still sky-rocketing price of development. For now, the game will only be released for the PC and Xbox 360.
According to Vicky Valanos, Track7 Managing Director, "If Sony were to offer us assistance in producing a PS3 version we would be more than happy to oblige". In case you have no idea what the game is all about, it follows the adventures of two paranormal journalists, Andronicus and Pheve as they track a lead about a long-lost, almost forgotten, ancient artifact. They get caught in present-day Athens, Greece wherein a thin line separates reality from myth.
But for now, this Theseis cancellation issue is still pretty much a rumor...until an official and written statement about this comes out. What about you? Do you think this is a rumor or a real development? Do you find this tidbit good or bad news? Let us know through your comments.

Interesting news I would say. With all the bashing of the next-gen consoles going on (and being a Sony hater myself) I still find it a bit hard to believe. Then again, developing for the PS3 definetly will not be cheap. It would be quite a blow for Sony if developers already jump off the train due to development costs. I guess it is fair to say that the developer struggles with the costs but I don't think that they will cancel the title entirely; Then again, I never really heard about this game before which may be a hint that the team is not really satisfied with it's progress.
Another Nail in the Coffin for the PS3
...porting a game from pc to xbox360 is a snap, but porting it to ps3 takes some skill and some knowledge of a new architect (cell) I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of games get ported to x360 from pc. Ports are stupid anyways. This will require devs to make new games for ps3.
So far there isnt one PC port on the Xbox360 that lives up to the original. Still cant use a mouse and keyboard and the graphics arent even close. I want more original games for the PS3. Sure the cost of porting the game is higher then the Xbox360 but that doesnt mean that its too high. I think developers are too worried about money and not quality of games.
Who are Track 7?
"So far there isnt one PC port on the Xbox360 that lives up to the original." Well 'so far' = 6 months. And it's not about PC ports. Games being developed for PC and next-gen consoles are multi-platform games, not ports.
^^^ Correction, 7 months. ;) But the point remains. For example, UT2007 is being developed for both PC and PS3, therefore the PS3 version of the game is not a PC port, even if development started on the PC originally.
Track 7 is a small company with no prior experience. The programmers are probably well versed in programming for the PC (programming for PC is almost free, no royalty payments), and xbox360 is quite close in terms of similarity to the PC. I suspect that they have probably bitten too much and don't have the resources (could be manpower, experience, or money) to make this game for another platform.
To be honest, I don't think this is truth. Mainly because one of the most expensive things of the development are already paid, supposedly (the PS3 dev kits) so, after paying that, I can't imagine a company saying 'Ey, PS3 is crap for developing, so we're thinking about cancelling the PS3 version'. Those things are thought BEFORE paying for a devkit. And, if the problem is using the Cell in the port, they would make a crappy PS3 version with slowdowns or worse graphics, but they wouldn't cancel the PS3 version. As all the crap publicity about PS3 lately, it sounds like Microsoft doing dirty ***** in the background. Doesn't sound like 'eh, Sony, help us or we won't be able to release the game for your very complicated machine', but a bit more like 'Ey, Sony, after speaking with the guys in M$, we decided that you pay us some money or we'll cancel the PS3 version talking ***** about the machine and your devkits'. Of course, probably there would be no option for Sony and in some months the only version cancelled will be the PS3 one for the happiness and hopes of the XTS fans who will say 'Ey, PS3 is ***** and crappy!' even if smaller companies are making PS3 exclusive titles without problems.
"As all the crap publicity about PS3 lately, it sounds like Microsoft doing dirty ***** in the background." Ah yes, it's so much more comforting to believe conspiracy theories, such as an evil MS plan (Muhahahaha!), rather than to face facts. Ever since E3, Sony have been on the defensive regarding the PS3. However, Sony put themselves in this position, especially after E3 last year (Killzone anyone?) compared to this year, plus the launch delay, the price, the downgrading of certain features, the perception of copying the opposition whether justified or not (motion sensing, 2 SKUs, worldwide November launch), games which look on par with the 360, etc. Sony put themselves in this position, however I have no doubt they'll get themselves out of it. Much of the negative publicity is of their own making, and therefore they just have to ride it out. After launch, few will care anymore, except the media who will latch onto any rumour of problems with the PS3 hardware and will exagerate it for a news story. :|
"Killzone anyone?" After seeing the Heavy Rain trailer killzone does seem like its a possibility.
Sometimes the most obvious reasons are the ones that is staring you in the face... Reading the excerpt again made me realise that these guys are basically asking for Sony's help in publishing this game on the PS3. They have probably got MS to help publish their game on the Xbox360 (seeing that xbox360 doesn't even have decent games that it can call it's own. It's all either PC and xbox360 or PC, PS3 and Xbox360 but never Xbox360 on its own), and PC is basically a no issue. But I suspect that they don't have the money to publish the game on the PS3 by themselves. This looks to be a plea for help in footing the bill disguised as a taunt. Either that or the journalist was probably trying to add some spice in to the story.
"After seeing the Heavy Rain trailer killzone does seem like its a possibility." Oh sure, a DEMO set in a small kitchen with ONE character on the screen really does make Killzone look possible with it's dozens of million+ polygon models, large open environment and particle/smoke effects. *roll eyes* Killzone will never be possible with the workstation models seen in that CGI trailer last year. Killzone with the kind of models seen in next-gen games however (less polygons with normal mapping), now THAT may be possible.
They're just looking for more cash. If they develope the game for teh PC/360 a port won't be a ton more work, sure it'll be some work moving the engine to the cell's unique architecture but not so much that they'd need financial assasstince to do so. They're just looking for that extra boost of cash flow to ensure they don't come up short.
all all pie in the sky till the ps3 hits I know one thing . I really think Ms will have halo 3 out the same day as the ps3 hits it just something i think they r planing Mite evein see a price drop of the 360 Ms wont be happy till they kill the ps3 I would have got a ps3 but i,m not going 2 pay 20 to 40 dollars more 4 game just cos on BR disk nw
Well, there are a couple of things here: - To Yaz: Whatever the position Sony is at the moment is deserved or not (and ignoring your out-of-place critics at Sony), there are a lot of bad rumours about PS3 going around almost everyday, a lot of them unjustified and false, as well as technical 'reviews' of the PS3 structure made by M$ people who really have no idea or simply are bastard liars (probably the 2nd). You can like what Sony does or not, but you're not going to convince me that all those things come from nowhere. - To Fluffy: Your theory would be the most logical one and what I would believe... but in different terms. If a company does want some money from a publisher, they don't start giving bad press to the publisher's machine in advance. And to say NOW that they could have to cancel the project is another suspecting thing. Once they are at this stage of it, they would release a crappy PS3 version but not cancel the game. It really seems like M$ acting in there "always very honest" style... again.
They always release it PC and 360 because its so fricken easy to program for both those platforms. the PS3 is like the amazon where you need a tour guide to program for it.
man, when sh|t starts rolling downhill it just keeps going...
MS and The big N really want indies to make games for them. Didn't Sony say they want only the "best of the best". I have not seen Sony take any interest in indy games...
As I said, hold on to your conspiracy theories if it makes you feel better, I prefer to live in the real world. To act as if Microsoft is behind most of the negativity towards Sony is just laughable, it really is. Sure you can point out one article on Major Nelson's website which compared both consoles, but so what, that was over a YEAR AGO, and what did you expect? And if they are quote "bastard liars" for doing so, then so are Sony for passing off pre-rendered footage as realtime on the PS3. "You can like what Sony does or not, but you're not going to convince me that all those things come from nowhere." And you're not going to convince me that every website, every journalist or every developers who says something that is or can be interpreted as being negative towards Sony, are doing do under the influences of Microsoft. Next time you read something negative towards Sony, try looking deeper. Sometimes it will be unfair, sometimes it will be justified, sometimes it will be right, other times wrong. Whatever it is, trying putting aside the simplistic idea that big bad evil MS (*boo hiss*) are bashing poor sweet innocent little Sony (*ah bless*). ;)
PC ports would be cheap to bring to the PS3 if the game was developed using OpenGL and actually would cost a lot more to bring to Xbox360. Why? Development time. Problem is DirectX is dominating the PC market due to Microsoft's monopoly while OpenGL as it's name explains is an open graphics library and has no ownership. Building for all three (PC, PS3, 360) is a problem. That's why it would be costly if Epic wanted to bring Unreal2007 to the 360 because they are using OpenGL. This rumor might be true but fanboys please keep you ignorant untrue comments like "PC to 360 is easy and PS3 is hard to develop for" to yourselves.
"That's why it would be costly if Epic wanted to bring Unreal2007 to the 360 because they are using OpenGL." Er no, UT2007 is running under EPIC's Unreal Engine 3, the SAME game engine used for Gear's of War on the 360. Therefore it would be easy to port any Unreal Engine 3 based game from one format (PC and console) to another. :|

Perhaps it was an error. ;) So... moving on...
Please don't believe for a second that MS doesn't start rumors. This is a common strategy that companies like Intel and MS employ here in the US. MS is the leader when in comes to introducing Fear Doubt and Uncertainty in the competition's consumer base. Please see this site on some of the documented events records in the FUD war Microsoft started on Linux. http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/57261/index.html Linux is not the only technology targeted by the MS FUD machine. Do searches on Apple Macs, the Java Programming language and the Open graphics library OpenGL. In conclusion: Does Microsoft start nasty rumors against their competition? You bet they do. It's documented. Does every rumor start from MS? No but you can bet that MS does all it can to spread the word. Is this post a rumor started by MS? I doubt it
"Does Microsoft start nasty rumors against their competition? You bet they do. It's documented." And are Sony above doing the same? Of course not. My objection here is the automatic assumption of certain gamers that anything negative against the PS3 and/or Sony must have come from Microsoft, which is pure nonsense.
but look at Forza Motorsport 2! I guarentee, if the final product doesn't look on par or better they're going to pull a Killzone on the 360 supporters and laugh away. But either way, I can see this story as being possible considering that they're an independent developer that's only familiar with PC programming/design and doing 3 versions at once might be a little daunting. What boggles me is that it shouldn't cost that much to port their title to the PS3 since it runs C language code just fine. And programming for the SPUs, if they don't manually dedicate each processor to certain tasks, is actually automated by the system. Yeah, it's totally awesome. The Cell architecture actually ASSISTS laziness, haha. It can automatically dedicate whatever SPUs it wants to the code as it runs through line by line. Not as efficient of course as manual construction, but it works fine. If you question what i've just said, go to the IBM website and do some research on how the Cell architecture works; it'll blow your mind. If this rumor is true, it's not because the PS3 is any more expensive to develop for than the 360 (in actuality, the costs are similar) but rather they don't have the time to put out three different versions of their title. Time = money since they have to pay their employees, and being an independent developer they're probably not willing to hire 8 more guys to handle the work involved.
"but look at Forza Motorsport 2! I guarentee, if the final product doesn't look on par or better they're going to pull a Killzone on the 360 supporters and laugh away." At NO TIME did Microsoft claim Forza was realtime footage or presented it as if it was, so I fail to see your point. Killzone was presented as if it was realtime footage, and MANY actually believe it was, perhaps even yourself! (even though it was obviously pre-rendered). When ask if it was realtime during interviews, Sony continued to be evasive on the issue, never giving a clear answer even though they knew it was pre-rendered. So again, I fail to see your point. Killzone didn't have the impact it had last year because it was a great trailer, it had the impact it had because many thought it was realtime, and therefore believed it was proof of the PS3's superiority over the 360.
It had the impact because people thought it was a great trailer AND that it was actual gameplay. And it wasn't just the graphics; it was the enemy and team AI as well as the quality of the animations that blew people away. The content in the video was made with Maya and Lightwave (even Guerilla said so), and as much as I want to believe that it was CG ( come on, there's no way our games are going to get that good that quickly....right?) there are at least a dozen blatant mistakes in the video that hint that it actually was gameplay. The published word is that the trailer was rendered 5 frames per second on the early PS3 they had, and then sped up for the show. Sony and Guerilla have repeatedly stated that it was gameplay, but not whether the video was recorded straight off the dev kit with no enhancements, or whether the data was recorded and prettied up afterwards, etc (there's a lot of possibilities). Point is, if they fail Sony's going to get mowed down by gamers as well as the press. And there's no way they would take that risk. As for Forza, that trailer is all that MS has shown us and it looks a hell of a lot better than the games on their system so far. Thus, CG. Actually, I was surprised that they even bothered to show a CG sequence considering their strong stance on only showing gameplay footage. In fact, they may have started to realize that showing potentially sub-par gameplay footage might not be the best way to sell the 'awesome power' of their console, and that CG, while not completely honest, sells better. I mean, just look at the footage of the Too Human demo at E3. That was just horrid crap and definitely convinced me, as well as many others, not to buy it. Sony's taken a big risk showing target renders for the 3rd time in a row, but PS1 and PS2 games ended up surpassing their pre-launch target renders after about 3-4 years anyway. They have a lot of faith in their developers and I know they'll do everything in their power to make it possible.
Yaz, don't start the same ***** about the E3 '05 again as it's the perfect excuse for Sony haters to avoid any issue concerning Nintendo or M$. This is not the place to speak about that AGAIN, no matter who is right or not. And I never said M$ was behind every negative comment about PS3 (in fact, there are many for sure not related with M$), but there are others that really smell like M$ doing there usual nasty work. The Professor, I agree with you. About this case I can't be sure and it's not one of those that are clearly M$ manipulation, but really... I don't see the point in the words of Track 7 in the press if they want Sony support. Of course I can't be sure in this case, but I'm of another PS3 negative "rumors", "comments", etc. previous to this one.
"It had the impact because people thought it was a great trailer AND that it was actual gameplay. And it wasn't just the graphics; it was the enemy and team AI as well as the quality of the animations that blew people away." Actually, that's the same thing. The 'gameplay' would not have any impact if everyone knew it was ALL pre-rendered, since it says nothing about the actual game or the game engine. It is because some thought it was real time that all those elements seemed so impressive. If they knew it was pre-rendered, it would have been view as just an impressive pre-rendered trailer for the game, but nothing more! "The content in the video was made with Maya and Lightwave (even Guerilla said so), and as much as I want to believe that it was CG ( come on, there's no way our games are going to get that good that quickly....right?) there are at least a dozen blatant mistakes in the video that hint that it actually was gameplay." How can it be gameplay if it was pre-rendered? Mistakes in that video were due to the fact that it still needed more work, not because it was gameplay, since there was no game engine involved (the trailer was completed just 3 days before E3!). "The published word is that the trailer was rendered 5 frames per second on the early PS3 they had, and then sped up for the show." That came from PSM about a month after E3, but they provided no source. They were going by rumour, not by facts. NOTHING from that trailer was running on PS3 devkits, and it wasn't even created by Guerilla, but by a CGI company in Scotland (probably the one who created some CGI cinematics for Killzone on the PS2). Guerilla gave them the game assets (models, textures etc) and they did the rest; http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=SWo3Memcbxs This confirmation came after 8 months of arguements over whether Killzone was realtime or not, something Sony could have cleared up immediately at E3. "As for Forza, that trailer is all that MS has shown us and it looks a hell of a lot better than the games on their system so far." Halo 3 was realtime, it was running on the game engine with actual game assets, and includes the Global Lighting mentioned on this website for the Fantasy Engine. It looks as impressive as anything I've seen at E3 so far, including MGS4 (which also looked superb). But going back to Forza, again, this was a pre-rendered trailer, it didn't pretend to be anything else. No-one in the media were asking "I mean, just look at the footage of the Too Human demo at E3. That was just horrid crap and definitely convinced me, as well as many others, not to buy it." Fine, who cares that they implemented a new streaming system into the game just before E3 which caused the framerate to plummet, but once it's optimised the framerate will be back to the level that others saw when they previewed the game a month of so before E3. Hey, games in development at E3 should be perfect, right? Although I would say, given the changes to the game just before E3, they should have chosen not to show it in it's current state. That WAS an error. "Sony's taken a big risk showing target renders for the 3rd time in a row, but PS1 and PS2 games ended up surpassing their pre-launch target renders after about 3-4 years anyway. They have a lot of faith in their developers and I know they'll do everything in their power to make it possible." For PS1 and PS2, Sony didn't show any target render's for their games before launch. Sony showed realtime demos running on the machines. From the dinosaur demo on the PS1 to the Ridge Racer Girl on the PS2, everything was realtime. :|
"Yaz, don't start the same ***** about the E3 '05 again as it's the perfect excuse for Sony haters to avoid any issue concerning Nintendo or M$. This is not the place to speak about that AGAIN, no matter who is right or not." I don't want to dwell on it either, but if people are going to act like Sony didn't bring some of this negativity on themselves after what happened this year, then I'm sorry but I have to bring up some of the reasons, and unfortunately Killzone is one of them. However, this is the PS3 section of the website, and I should perhaps remember that certain comments are going to be more sensitive to gamers here than others. So I'll be careful next time. ;) "And I never said M$ was behind every negative comment about PS3 (in fact, there are many for sure not related with M$), but there are others that really smell like M$ doing there usual nasty work." Fair enough Lefa, I didn't mean to single you out specifically, it's just that everytime something like this appears about the PS3 or Sony, someone always points the finger at Microsoft, often using it as a way to dismiss the news on the basis that Microsoft are behind it.
They did not canceled the game because they never started a PS3 version. Just go to their site http://www.track7games.com and read for your self.
well ign has the real story on whats happening. here it is for the lazy bums. "PS3land.com wrote an erroneous article on June 29, 2006 regarding track7games and our upcoming game Theseis," commented track7 Managing Director Vicky Valanos. "Track7games would like to clarify that we never cancelled something that did not exist in the first place. We plan to develop Theseis for PC and Xbox 360 in the near future. As for the PS3, we simply made a strategic decision to not move ahead because we deemed it not probably at this time." So what exactly is going on here? Well, in May of 2005, track7games announced that it was working on a new next-gen adventure for PC and next-generation consoles. When IGN contacted track7 at the time, we were told that the plan was to create Theseis for PS3 and Xbox 360 but final platforms had not been determined yet. As was revealed in the statement above, the company has obviously decided to go ahead with the 360 and PC versions and not a build for PlayStation 3. In other words, the PlayStation 3 version of the game never made it past the initial idea concept -- actual production had never begun. source: ign
Thanks guys. So far, I've avoided commenting about Track7 and Theseis, because I preferred to wait until the developers discussed it publically, and now that they have, many of the arguements and claims made here are moot. So let's think for a moment, were MS behind this rumour or was it simply a mistake made by a PS3 website? Hmmm, I favour the later. ;)
Well, in this case it looks like a big mistake of that website. Nothing else to comment. xD.
damn i was hoping this would come to both consoles...i wanna play this on the ps3..the architecture of the building itself shows their potential.. dont' care if u disagree.
There are many games that are gonna comout only for the PS3 and PC just as this game is coming out for the 360 and PC. An example of a PS3 and PC only game is Unreal Tournament 2007. They were thinking at first to bring it to 360 but they changed their mind. Who Thesis might become a PS3 game also.
Sony is biding their time hoping production costs will decrease and chip yields will increase. In the end they are gonna eat crow on each and every PS3 for at least two years. Most of us will not get our paws on one till 2008. Dismal cell chip yields in the area of 20 percent spell disaster for Sony. That coupled with Blue Ray production costs..I just don't see how they are gonna deliver effectively. I had both a Saturn and a PS1 then opted for only a PS2 and now after looking at the facts, have opted, due largely to impatience, for a 360. which thus far with some exceptions, has been satisfying. Nevertheless I will still more than likely buy a PS3 as well. I simply feel that Sony may have bitten off more than they can chew. I have set my expectations low because I have a feeling Sony is going to pull a "bait and switch" Time will tell.
There are a lot of stupid coments here, but everyone remember, you will have the power (on each console) at some point to do what you want, but you don't have to make each game to look at the best you can have!!!! (in terms of graphics and/or gameplay). Simple things sometimes makes more sense, but of course not always you are going to do that things. In the case of Sony, has a lot variety in games, for all type of audiences in general, but more for adults. In the case of Microsoft more for adults than kids and more than 50% or games are FPS. Nintendo has a lot of games for kids, with some games more especific for adults, and now they are focusing more on non-gamers. I think gamers usually tend to buy what they have trusted and know they like, regardless of the price. If you know that much of the RPG's are coming for the PS3, of course the RPG gamers are going to buy it eventually. And so on......
Come on, you can't cancel something that wasn't even being develope for the PS3 in the first place anyway. Thesis was meant for the PC and 360. It was never develope for the PS3. And this rumor is stupid.
thats sux for u sony guys, this is good news for me I have a 360
