The PS3 North American video commercial... waits for the PS3

Apparently, Sony-North America's pushing the "invasion" theme for their PS3 ads even further. Although the adjective used here should be more benign, like ET benign, like "visit."

Kotaku caught this video playing online and in cinemas nationwide. They've dubbed it "The Wait" because, well, it was the best way to dub it. In fact, when you first see the clip, you'll have no clue at all this is even PS3-related. To quote Kotaku: no game footage, no PS3 sightings, and the only clue you'll have that this is a PS3 ad - a distinctive "3" shadow for those who want to look for it - is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it affair.

But you know what? The Kotaku staff member who uploaded the vid loved it. We'll agree it's simple and subdued - I'd even go out on a limb to say that it seems anticlimactic, especially after the PS3's more explosive TGS 2006 rollout. "11.17.06," the ad ends (in the PS3/Spiderman font). Just one more month, and those kids will be able to take ET home. Well, kids from around 400,000 households in North America, anyway.

Yeah. We think the commercial's nice, too.

Wowzers

As a teaser trailer its awesome! Cranking up my speakers, and listing to it, ran a chill down my spine. This invasion theme is totally tubular!

Uhm...

Sorry to say, I didn't really like that one. It almost tries too hard to achieve some sort of esoteric mysticism that's supposedly associated with the PS3 (somehow?).

Ummm

The giant no.3 This is the build up. A teaser to get people talking. Then the main big adds will come. The giant no.3 alien ship things. It could very well be the bes tad campaign / console build up ever. Seriously. The N63 one was okay, PSone was good, PS2 was WTf?, Dreamcast was WTTTFFFF?, and Xbox was not too shabby. Im still yet to see a 360 add :P or ad campaign.

Blarg

I didn't like it either. I thought it was cheesy, cliche and far too much to focus on little children with backpacks who are the most impressionable of people. "Lo' and behold, an alien spaceship, thank god humanity will be saved or something, let us wait on the roof for the single most incredible moment in human history". "Now let us look at each other and acknowledge ourselves with a nod, implying we know better and that the PS3 will bestow it's blessing upon us." It's like those stupid adverts about butter wherein they show a man eating a baked potato and he's crying because it tastes so good.

On point

Sony doesn't need to advertise for the older crowd. The fact that all preorders are sold out is proof of that. It wasn't kids camping out in front of Game Stop & EB Games. From what I read on the actual article, this commercial will be airing on movie theaters so there's no chance of changing the chanel. The purpose of this commercial is to get people talking and psyched up. And it does exactly that. I don’t know how people can criticize this commercial with all the garbage commercials that are on TV now a days. We got way too many people just looking for an excuse to bash Sony and it's getting ridiculous.

Only 400,000 PS3s At Launch

It should have said the wait is almost over.

hm

Another horrid peice of crap Sony puts out trying to sell a product by not including it into the commercial. What the h3ll was teh camera out of focus for half the time??? This was some high school film maker, it seems. The Sony marketers must have not graduated highschool, "a 12 year kid in a commerical for a 600 dollar system....hmm....great idea! Bill, your BRILLIANT! Lets put a 12 year old kid with a back pack on a roof!! That will sell the PS3!"
by - 2006-10-16 10:12:32
Fantastic

Can't agree more with you Manny And I really think this ad is awesome.. All the hidden signs, the #3 in the kid's eyes, the kind-of #3 on his back-pack, and the giant #3 on the roof tops at the end.. I have to give it to you Sony, fantastic!

nice add indeed!

...11.17.06... ...the wait is over... ...PlayStation 3... ...no... ...wait... ...that is what you all thought... ...cause you were wrong... ...and the Blu-Ray laser still doesn't work at all... ...and we don't like Europe that much anyway... ...so... ...have a nice wait... ;) nice teaser anyway. I think there could be this huuuge PS3 above the city on the next step. Just like one of these advertisements that are in some big cities around the globe (there you can see PS3s flaoting above a city as well). If it's not like that I like it anyway ;) So, a quite nice advert :)

By the way

Oh, I almost forgot.. There is also the 3 AM clock
by - 2006-10-16 11:54:16
funny

I think it is funny how Sony is putting out ads for the PS3, even though it will sell out by the first hour out it is in the stores.

360 ad campaign

the 360 ad campaign came a long time ago. and they too were WTF? made no sense whatsoever
by - 2006-10-16 12:35:24
Cool

I like the ad. Lots of hidden signs in it as pointed out by the other commenters. I like how they're taking a serious approach to the ads this time around unlike the past and others who go for quick little "smart" punchlines or "cool factors" that have you forgetting about it a second later. Sony is serious about the PS3 and so their serious with their ad campaign. Makes sense to me.
