Just how powerful is the Sony PlayStation 3 game console? We know for a fact that it can produce cutting-edge sound and graphics at a whim. We already know that it can help doctors fight tumors. Now we're about to find out that it's good enough to drive a car atop Colorado's Pike Peak.Yep, and we're not talking about doing it in a racing game. We're dead serious when we say that you can take the back seat and the console will guide a car effortlessly when partnered with GPS, infrared cameras, stereo cameras and Yellow Dog Linux.
At the center of it all, of course, is the Cell processor which we've heard all too well about. Based on the same technology that fires up IBM's Power PCs, the Cell uses its mathematical muscle to do all the complex calculations at lightning-fast speeds to effectively pull off the automotive feat.
Racing's renowned team Axion will showcase this incredible development in the upcoming DARPA Challenge sponsored by the US Government. At stake is US$ 2 million to be won.
Axion has come close to winning the contest twice before as they ranked sixth a few years back and finished in at third in their last outing. Autonomous driving has always been their cup of tea but this time they want to add a little sugar to their spice by throwing in the high-end game console to the repertoire.
"We felt having cars drive themselves was getting a little too easy, so we threw the Sony PlayStation into our bag of tricks," says Axion team leader Bill Kehaly as he jokes around with the idea. The DARPA Challenge takes place on the 3rd of November in a venue yet to be announced.

um 360 is not as powerful as ps3. Maybe it could guide you on a straight highway but not on a mountain. otherwise this article would say PS3 and 360 so powerful it can drive a car. And btw a 60gb ps3 is only $100 more than a normal 360 (core pack don;t count cuz its *****)
Assuming the 360 could scrape by with enough processing power
PS3 car ---> Drives car without human on mountain highway.

omfg i was taking the piss out of what the xbox fanboys used to say, it was always along the lines of. 360 is just as powerfull as ps3 but $200 cheaper .
Xbox270 would just overheat with the ring of death and drive over the cliff. The person inside would be saying to themself, I had to choose the cheaper one, why didnt I pick the one without screwups.
360 could also do this (in theory). The thing is, it doesn't have linux on it and MS doesn't sell the chips. So people have no way to even try....but, it's a game console after all. Even 1 TFLOP is enough for this.
These guys would be better off getting a Cell blade from IBM to do this though....
Also if it went to the consumer level, where cars were built with this, do you think they would be sticking PS3's in the trunk to do the calculations ? No, it would just be a computer running on a Cell....
By my recollection the original article stated the PS3 would be controlling ONE CAMERA ON THE CAR. Not the whole car..
I think its because developers didn't want to develop games for the over priced console, in 2008 there is a great lineup of games and hopefully a $499 price drop that will stay (it will stay if Sony is smart and wants the increase in sales)
i guess this concerns less of the ps3 more rather the cell. Think about it, in 5 years or something when they make cell mobile we can implement it in a GPS or something. It'd be kinda cool, a gps that drives for you.
I don't think i would trust the xbox 360 to auto-drive my car, it would overheat and die in the middle of the freeway.
I think this is a good thing, I mean there are so many PS3's just sitting there on store shelves collecting dust why don't they do this with all the cars in the U.S. I mean there is enough PS3 out there doing nothing may as well put them to use.
P.S. MooHaaas05 the 60 gig PS3 is $499.99 after a price drop because it wasn't selling, the core 360 is $299.99, the premium 360 with the 20 gig hard drive is $399.99 and the elite is $479.99 and has 60 more gigs than your PS3 and 20 bucks cheaper in the end

I would rather have a system that has not alot of games and are great than a high library that breaks due to RRoD.
For 20 bucks more you still get plenty of hard drive space, you get a Blu-ray player, and you can help cure cancer. Pff, elite... not so much.

Third it's true the Elite is 20 bucks cheaper but it still doesn't have built in Wi-Fi, HD-DVD and the HDMI they put in was 1.2. And they didn't even bother to use the 65nm processors so it will still overheat and die like the old ones. Besides I can just put in any Hard disk into my PS3 including bigger ones than the 120 GB one in the Elite and for cheaper. So technically the 60 GB PS3 is still superior to the Elite. So basically the Xbox360 Elite sucks big D.I.C.K.S just like you.

It's about Cell, and PS3 is a super cheap way to get ahold of Cell.
Intel Core 2 extremes @ 2.93 GHZ are $1400 canadian just for a CPU...that's two PS3's and a game, which have better CPU's in them (plus everything else)....
But hey, this is the stuff cell was made for. It really could probably drive 3 cars at once....
don't forget the 50$ for Xbox Live. so much for being 20$ cheaper.

They don't not yet. People are just starting to understand the cell. As time progresses games will become more advanced as new programming techniques are developed for the cell.
They made the contest involving a PS3 so it would be a challenge.
Considering the PS3 can't even come out with a decent driving simulator game for who knows how long, I don't think this contest will be sucessful.
i think it just uses the cameras and detectors to see where its going and then the ps3 calculates when it needs to turn and such

for a little compare of this news. The Boeing 777 uses computers based on Intel 486 and AMD. So, it's really more difficulty drive a car than pilot an airplane???
Only that, that is the first time of use of a Video Game to drive a car, but it's not because the power of the CELL processor.

Your a *****ing retard. Driving a jet on computers is much easier than cars. Jets dont have to worry about a boulder being in the middle of a road. Thats why they use such weak processors cause they have no need for more powerfull ones. The cars on the other hand need a powerhouse like a PS3 to process all the information.

In fact it is. Car is the most difficult transport device to drive by AI. Simply due to the possibility of external object interaction is much much higher then any transport device. Since I have done master level paper in AI. Frankly it's not superising PS3 can do AI drving since real AI base on multi node FFTs. No tree branching as MS suggested, which is only a look up table.
First of all: You must wash your mouth with soap and then acid to melt your tongue.
Do you know how many parameters is available to process in a Fly by wire system? Parameters like speed, altitude, mach, column, wheel, pedal, sideslip, angle of attack, roll angle, thrust, etc...
Much more parameters and, is very important that: a car is a stable system and a Fly by wire aircraft is instable.

Whereas the PS3 can handle up to 4XAA...MS originally planned to have the 360 to run games at at least 4XAA, but turns out the penalty is too much on the 360 so the requirement is dropped to 2XAA...and even that poses some problems for the 360
Developers would probably rather make games at the XBOX360's full potential because its easier and it can also be put on the PS3. However, if the developers made games at the PS3's full potential they would have to take stuff out so it would work for the 360 and they would have to provide a phase change cooling system with the game so it won't break the XBOX360 for making it use too much processing power. If microsoft made a console that's actually worthy of being called a Next Gen gaming console then the PS3 wouldn't be bashed but praised for being so cheap for what you get. An XBOX with hardware as powerful as the PS3's would be too expensive for me.
My point is, until another Next Gen gaming console comes out to provide competition at the PS3's Next Gen level then the PS3 will do poorly. In Developers eyes, the XBOX360 is better to make games for because its easier, cheaper, faster, and it can be put on the PS3 no problem.

The 360 can support 4xAA almost cost free. THe FACT is, to utilise this feature on the 360, the game engine has to be written from the GROUND UP to support it. You can't just bolt it on to an existing engine.
Hence in future, more and more 360 games will feature 4XAA, and it will achieve this much better and with far less of a performance hit than 4XAA on the PS3.

oh, and FYI; a computer would have a harder time driving a car than piloting a plane; which is why most jet liners have had autopilot for years as standard whilst the self driving car is still in its prototype stages...
The PSone had more processing power than it took to put man on the moon (supposedly), a PS3 driving a car isn't that surprising...
