The PS3 Firmware update bypass hack - Nothing more than uneducated sensationalism

PS3 1.51 Firmware - Image 1Alright, so you've been browsing around the intarwebs absorbing the latest news. And you've probably come across a few sites reporting this so called "PS3 Firmware Update bypass hack." And maybe you guys were wondering why we didn't cover it. Or maybe you weren't. Anyways, while the "hack" does work, it's nothing more than sensationalism since most of the supposed advantages are either outright fake or uneducated speculation.

First, details about the hack. It's nothing more than hosting your own DNS server in your network, modifying a couple of entries to redirect the PS3 update check host to a different IP and using that DNS server on the PS3 instead of the one provided by your ISP. What happens is that the PS3 will now try to check that modified IP address for the update information. Since you've now modified it, it will look in the wrong place. Not finding any update information, it will think that it has the latest update available.

This is all good. Unfortunately, the hack is pretty useless unless all you do on your PS3 is browse around the PlayStation network. Here's the list of advantages that a few other sites have been listing:
  • You can now access the official PS3 store without updating your current PS3 Firmware version! - Only for now.
  • You can now play PS3 games on-line, without updating your current PS3 Firmware! - Fake.
  • You may be able to downgrade the PS3's Firmware through this circumvention technique. - Fake.
  • You may be able to 'install' your own desired PS3 store items using this method. - Fake
While you might want to think of it as a PS3 hack, it is nothing more than a small bypass for network update. Here's why:
  • Since nothing has been exploited on the PS3, you still have to update your PS3 to the latest firmware if the game requires it. There is no way around it since you're not spoofing the version on the PS3 itself.
  • You cannot downgrade your PS3's firmware using this method. The PS3's OS will not run any code if it isn't signed by Sony themselves. Simply spoofing a DNS entry and "trying" to send rogue files will not make it run on the PS3, it would still fail the sign checks.
  • With regards to the PS3 Store items, they're probably signed too, which means that you can't simply install your own stuff.
  • As for accessing the official PS3 store without updating your firmware, it will only work as long as Sony lets it work. They can simply move the update-check host to the same domain as the PlayStation Network, which will mean that you can either use the network by updating to the latest firmware, or not being able to connect to the PlayStation Network at all.
If there's a real hack/exploit, it will have to be found in the PS3's firmware itself. And for now, there doesn't seem to be one. So while you might hate us for saying this, the truth is that the PS3 is still not hacked and it will take a lot more than some simple DNS spoofing to hack one. And you can be rest assured that if there is a real hack around, you will know about it here.

been patched too late news old like jesus
by - 2007-02-20 16:26:11
downgrade possible?

Couldn't you modify a ps3 update file, modify the version to one higher than yours so it uses it to upgrade, but to a lower firmware, or a custom one?
by - 2007-02-20 16:53:37
Unsigned

No. Since the files are not signed, you cannot run them.
by - 2007-02-20 17:00:19
Actually, you could play online

I just tried playing Call of Duty 3 online and it worked, I didn't have to upgrade. Then I tried Resistance and it also worked. It doesn't work now since they are fixing the Playstation Network, but it will later. So, playing online is True, not False.
by - 2007-02-20 17:06:50
IT WORKS

it totally works, nice job checking stuff before you post it. YOU CAN play games online without a firmware update, Resistance requires a GAME update, to fix some glitches, but that is it NOT A FIRMWARE. and the store was scheduled to be down today anyways for maintenance. So QJ before reporting stuff why don't you check your facts....now amend this post with the PROPER information.

Thank you

It's about time somebody posted that all they did was teach a bunch of kids how to spoof dns. Nothing more...

by - 2007-02-20 17:28:39
.

Wait till new games come out which have a higher firmware update on the Game disc itself. Try bypassing the update then :)

by - 2007-02-20 17:34:13
Oh so you are admitting it works now

So you just admitted it actually DOES work for now. So therefore it's NOT FAKE!
by - 2007-02-20 17:35:40
Then dont say it's fake.

Stop saying it's fake, atleast put True with a side note saying that future games wont be playable.

by - 2007-02-20 17:51:25
At the 10th post (DimmuJed)

Where does he admit that it DOES work for now? He never said it didn't work. Quote from the article, "Since you've now modified it, it will look in the wrong place. Not finding any update information, it will think that it has the latest update available." The article saying it does work but you still won't be able to do things exclusive for the latest firmware such as playing games with the latest firmware update. All this thing does is trick the PS3 that it has the latest firmware, it doesn't change the firmware itself.
by - 2007-02-20 17:55:45
fake??? NOT

yeah, but in the article it says it's all fake when it's obviously not. the last two items are unconfirmed to work YET but everything else DOES WORK! but instead qj just wants to be cool and kiss sony's ass and NOT TELL THE WORLD IT WORKS!
by - 2007-02-20 19:05:34
FAKE? IT DOES WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!

This does work played 2k7 online about 3 hours ago with this hack
by - 2007-02-20 19:57:54
STFU ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

OKAY SO THAT WORKS, AND ALL OF THE ONLINE GAMES WILL WORK NOW, WE KNOW THIS DUMB AZZ. BUT THE THING IS WHAT HAPPENDS WHEN MOTOSTORM COMES OUT, AND IT REQUIRES 1.51(AS AN EXAMPLE). YOU CANNOT BYPASS THIS SIMPLY BECAUSE THE UPDATE IS ON THE DISC. GOD YOU TRY TO ACT SMART YOU IMMATURE DEUCE. THANKS QJ FOR TELLING THE TRUTH.
by - 2007-02-20 20:24:26
Lulz

by - 2007-02-20 22:14:13
Works...

Who's the dumb ass who wrote this article? It works perfectly. Playing online and I don't have to update. Yea I'll probably have to update later for different games. But thats not what this is for anyway >_>... I look at it as something to hold me over till paradox saves the day =X
by - 2007-02-20 22:28:06
whats the big deal

is there really something important about you guys not updating the firmware? i don't see the point of this "hack" except that some kids can brag about having "one-up" on sony. ooh, big deal....
by - 2007-02-20 23:29:35
Hmm but..

If you guys have forgotten, This is how It first stared for the PSP, The First WebBrowser.. DNS Spoofing I belive, with WipeOut Pure, So then! POOF! Teh HACKZ!!! the first one to come!! but of course, 1.00 made it all happend, but still, It was a start.
by - 2007-02-21 00:57:12
Thank You

Of all the post ive been reading ur the only one with an educated answer i mean cmon ppl be patient sure there will be times wen maybe u have to sacrifice one thing for the other (i.e 1.5 onthe psp did not have many funcionalities at the beggining) but in the end the psp was CRACKED WIDE OPEN and i my opinion i dont see the ps3 being any different so just wait for an iso loader and be happy/patient or just update and forget bout the homebrew scene cuz i think alot of us are tred to here imaptient ppl that can wait 2-3 months to have everything they want in a system (iso loader's emulators and homebrew)
by - 2007-02-21 02:53:49
What boot loader?

The one QJ reported as fake?
by - 2007-02-21 06:16:46
Of Course

Which makes sense... Since DNS spoofing isn't really hacking, there's next to no work to be done. Cracking the firmware, on the other hand, takes much longer. Someone just has to look at the thing, realize how it checks for updates, and throw up a server. I'm not trying to discredit the guy who discovered this, I'm just saying it isn't that big a deal. I highly doubt this specific bypass will evolve into running unsigned code... or anything else, for that matter. Sony could patch this "hole" in a minute. All this says to me is at least someone is trying to kick start the PS3 scene. ;)

Sony's Firmware updates

Sony seems to be coming out with new firmware at least once a month and for good reasons. The march update apparently brings multi-tasking (downloading and another task) and DTS-HD codec which is DEFINATELY something to update for, if you have an HDMI reciever if not, dont bother.
by xche78x - 2007-02-21 09:58:24
so

but, some of us want to use this coz we dont wanna update our ps3 but still wanna download the auto assault 2 demo. dear QJ staff, why didnt you give instruction or link on how to do such changing of DNS. or is this not also possible?
by - 2007-02-21 10:03:24
its not fake

its not fake but, it is useless right now. There is no reason not to update to the latest firmware version.
by - 2007-02-21 12:04:46
Hmm...

I remember a lot of people back when the psp got 2.00 people were fussing about updating and playing new games games or waiting just to be safe. The people who updated later on regretted it because they couldn't play their home brew anymore, and were stuck outside the homebrewness for a long while. Some even went as far as to buy another psp that they can update and another psp just for home brew. And as far as I know, Paradox has only confirmed that it works on 1.32 and below >.>.. They did say that they tested it on 1.51 but they never released if it worked or not =\... Just MHO, >.> I'd rather be safe than sorry.
by - 2007-02-21 13:44:44
Anyways

Seriously, Why the hating QJ ??? You should have reported the xploit, because some people are in the boat of keep it at the lowest firmware possible. Personally, I just want to update mine on schedule for now, but after this major update next month, I'd like to keep it there for a while. If something important comes out in the fw, I'd let it upgrade. But if some major xploit comes out, and needs an earlier fw, I'll be pissed :) So QJ, get off your ass and report every story as usual. You guys report things like the ps3 price drops to $250 without a HD, without even THINKING about that one... You could at least post a good article about the DNS spoof, WHICH YOU ADMIT WORKS!!!
by - 2007-02-22 19:47:32
Really? Hmmm, that's immature

Oh QJ, really? This is fake? Did you try it? Really? I didn't think so. I guess this hack is "Nothing more than uneducated sensationalism" though right? Oh wait, no it works. But actually the part where you can play games online without updating is fake though right? Oh wait, no you're wrong again. But at least you're really smart and this isn't a real hack right? Well you were wrong on pretty much the entire news post and you were just trying to wound smart so I now have more hope that this could lead to additional hacks and you could be entirely owned rather than just mostly owned. In summation, QJ = Dumb + Owned
by - 2007-02-24 17:42:24
this is not psp

sony provided linux for running homebrew. the security on the gameos is now not only software but hardware-wise. it's probably many many many times stronger than on the psp
