The PS3 baby commercial is TEH CREEPIEST

Before, some of those PS3 commercials and trailers got us wetting our pants with excitement. This time around, we're wetting our pants because of sheer creepiness and terror. But isn't that the normal reaction when someone comes across a demonically possessed, schizo baby doll that laughs like a demented clown and makes things levitate?

No. It's not a trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's next movie. And neither is it something from Tim Burton either. It's not a new "The Omen" film, but nonetheless, this PS3 commercial (uploaded by medieval33025) from Sony does nothing but send violent shivers down our spines. Now if you're brave enough, turn off the lights, blast up the volume, get under the sheets, and click that Play button below:

If you managed to ignore the disturbing fact that the doll is crying (and un-crying) tears and see the commercial for what it is, trying to interpret the commercial is nigh impossible. We've been trying to come up with possible symbols or metaphors for what the baby represents, but we're out of fresh diapers ideas (the closest thing we have is that maybe it's a Halloween-themed commercial). Anyone is welcome to take a shot at it and give an interpretation of their own in the comments section.

Meanwhile, I think I'm... [faints in a state of fear and starts spasming on the floor]

ok....

Man ! What was that ????

by - 2006-10-27 15:39:15
I think...

The baby is one of us and wants the PS3 to be our God...OMG! SONY IS GOING TO TAKE OVER THE EARTH AND MAKE US THEIR SLAVES!

by senjutsu - 2006-10-27 15:48:52
WTF WAS THAT??

this is soo weird, and creepy... man this is not an add :S this can't "excite" enyone.. it can just`shallow up our mind! :|

by - 2006-10-27 15:57:26
that was funny

This commercial would be banned in North America, lucky japs. What this ad means: Hey qj, it's taking a stab at the "emotion engine". It's saying it's way beyond that, causing people to not only render emotions like ps2, but to now feel emotions.

by - 2006-10-27 16:02:32
can stop looking ..

I keep on looking at it , it's been almost 6 times now trying to figure out whats going on ! I Have a feeling that my brain is melting ! Maybe if i look at it again....

by coolguy2000 - 2006-10-27 16:19:54
I know what it Means

The baby is calling the PlayStation 3 "mama" because the PS3 is the mother of all game consoles and has control, that is why the baby stops crying, becuase of the PS3's power over the baby. Also, for those who didn't know this commercial ran last during the World Series on the Fox channel.

by - 2006-10-27 16:29:20
i know what ie means

They lead you to believe that the baby is alive.. but how could that happen... its just a dall... the ps3 is the one making the dall move because its not just a toy... its powerful and more than just a game system.. then makes it self levitate

by - 2006-10-27 16:31:38
.........

.... too me it's look like an invade of PS3 (the levitation and the reflect on the PS3 in the end looks like an alien with his ship to me :D )and also addiction to the PS3....(the red eyes) but it's kind of funny :D

by - 2006-10-27 16:36:57
what's the big deal...

What's with this talk of "If you haven't pre-ordered the ps3 you won't get one" Why? What about waiting in line at Best Buy the day it comes out...Anyone heard of that? I mean, a pre-order slip guarantees you a PS3 on launch day...But being 1st through about 7th in line at your local Best Buy on launch day pretty much guarantees you'll get a PS3 also don't it?

by - 2006-10-27 16:46:05
on ur mind..

maybe it has little meaning and its just suppose to make u think about it and keep the ps3 on ur mind

by - 2006-10-27 16:57:28
Well

You could see a bit of Resistance (the game) in the baby's eyes.

by - 2006-10-27 16:58:56
Fanboy Reactions

It's basically a spoof of fanboy's reaction thru the PS3's short history. First joy(E32005) then crying after the price announcement(E32006) then joy again after seeing the final hardware(Sony Gamer's day). We are all babies at heart.

by - 2006-10-27 17:25:33
LoL

This commercial is, how do you say cheap. I got ready for a thriller and i actually laghed...

by - 2006-10-27 18:00:18
wtf

Its about the PS3 being $599 but worth it because it animates dolls. pfft.

by - 2006-10-27 18:04:44
um

what on earth was that piece of junk??? I have to comend Sony for actually showing thier console...theres way to many comercials they got that have NOTHING to do with teh product...at least this shows the console... Nintendo and Microsoft are a bit better at marketing though...instead of shwoing cool features of the PS3, or good graphics...they get a plastic baby...wow...someone should shot the marketing execs at sony.

by - 2006-10-27 18:23:19
Sony's need help

I think Sony should go to Epic to see how a good commercial is done. Today I was blown away by the Gears of War teaser, and then I find Sony posting this creepy commercial, something is really wrong here!

by - 2006-10-27 18:28:33
.

I think they're trying to say "Wii sux d1ck and microsoft can lick my B@lls

by - 2006-10-27 18:43:01
SONY PR RETARDS STRIKE AGAIN

yet another retardfest of vomit and urine. I could pull a better ad out of a pile of rotten flaming dog*****. These commercials are understandable, because the only people buying a ps3 can afford to buy into artsy bull*****. Sony wants to cast the retard net and reel in the idiot bucks. What kind of naive moron sees an iota of merit in a god damn freaky baby doll? Do people just bend over and accept the rape of cliches brought to you by your favorite corporation?

by - 2006-10-27 19:11:50
Is this real???

Doesnt look real. It feels pretty cheap. To be honest I know a few people at work who can pull this ad out of their ass in a weekend.

by RommelTJ - 2006-10-27 19:25:59
I didnt like it

...but It got me to comment, and you to read as well. It serves its purpose as marketing. It would be bad marketing to advertise the price of the ps3.....

by - 2006-10-27 19:28:24
I will cry like a baby... My version.

I know that i will cry like a baby when the real Next Gen console power-ups in front of my eyes, then i will cry for real...And the i will realise that that's my new Console. Ps3. So, my tears of happiness will be converted on the most pleasant emotion...My body will have no weight and i will be in heaven with my beloved ps3. Marcelo Souza ( m-souza.com )

by - 2006-10-27 19:39:00
retarded

retarded atempt by sony .... baby doll= stupid/impressionable consumer facail expressions/ tears= the effect arrogant "the-next- generation-doesn't-begin-until-the-ps3-is-out" sony thinks it will have on these foolish consumers

by - 2006-10-27 19:49:01
real emphasis

By the already solidated enviremont all the subject attention lays upon the representation of the ps3 and not the baby. Cause and effect, one key solution for inspriring the theme to it, but as for unreality the baby is inanimate which coordinates a function of birth given by ps3. The commercial sets a tone of life to the bewildered. Somewhat as creepy the real message not as much intended on events is actually a key market stradegy to prmote a rebirth or next genration quote by Sony. There marketing stradegy is not really to let you see anything as to them promoting but to set a mood. The realism to how the baby counteracts is mystifying to the effect of shattering knowledge and experience. The baby not only aknowledges their promotion, but brings it alive. Pay close attention to his eyes, when the tear gives a reverse effect symbolizes an almighty uproar. Somewhat confusing the commercial is all but ignorant. The imbedding truth is im sure you watched this commercial several times. As you might have noticed the ps2 and psx have also set the same standard which is "This is...". The ps3 has a little trickery although many might find appeal of cheapness from greater confusing commercials to hide inner truths. though in reality are small skits based on very subjective conponents. This one is clever in the sense that it's very clear in perspective but confusing in emphasis. Thank-you for all who have read my thesis on the commercial.

by Ninkul - 2006-10-27 20:10:30
...

Yeah.. i think they just tried to embed it into our minds 'cause they knew people would be like "what the hell is this ad on about?" and people would try figure it out and then we'd just be thinking about PS3s which yeah. Though it doesn't really leave that great of an image so i guess not? Maybe it was really just pure randomness..?

by - 2006-10-27 20:11:23
.......

U spent all that time to study the video to see what it means? U must have alot of free time.....Nice reasoning though...I personally like the commercial cuz its different.....u dont see M$ or Nintendo making a kool commercial like this

by - 2006-10-27 20:53:01
orly

put down the crack and step away from the keyboard.

by - 2006-10-27 22:16:06
what!

For the haters of the add all I can say is what gives? This add is awsome and weird. Its also cool cuz you never see adds like this. Its good stuff.

by - 2006-10-27 22:27:34
.....

Chris Cunningham probably did this commercial he has done a previous commercial for sony.

by - 2006-10-27 22:46:37
Its NA

If it was a Japanese commercial it wouldn't have the North American release date at the end

by - 2006-10-28 00:01:43
i got it!

sonys saying that the playstation 3 is more important than your children.

by - 2006-10-28 00:08:42
or better yet

sony could also be saying that the playstation 3 will be more of a parent than a game console. Leaving you with more free time to do whatever you want.

by - 2006-10-28 01:41:52
:D

Yea! I love all the new ps3 ads! Some really cool stuff! Maybe it's just cuz i cant wait to get the ps3, but these ads awe so awesome. how do they do it!

by - 2006-10-28 01:53:49
fdfdfdfddfdfdfdfdfdfdfd

i think I know -_- the baby was happy abt the ps3 at 1st yea? and then he smiled like a mario all of a sudden. it means that nintendo is gona snatch all the consumers away with their brain washing techniques, and the consumers are not willing, thus teh cry. too simple

by - 2006-10-28 04:44:58
cool

I personally thought that was wicked... in a disturbingly creepy way...

by - 2006-10-28 04:46:48
go deeper

twas a blast. nice to see that some ads still got some balls in em. unfortunately most of regural hillbillies wont get it, but what the f*ck, its their loss. atleast us smart ones got the thrills out of it :)

by - 2006-10-28 07:17:53
Actually it's US

This was actually aired in the US. I saw it a couple of nights ago. I was like WTF was that... PS: There's something wrong with Sony, first the Lik-Sang thing, now this...

by ffaldkja - 2006-10-28 08:16:08

good thesis, if it wasnt for Sony's cryptic wording and sly hints, I wouldnt be backing Sony still. Im not sure why they go for a higher lever of understanding but I respect that from them. Society is dumbed down to much by media influence and desperatly needs brought up to a higher standard.

by - 2006-10-28 08:19:20
Notoriety vs argumentation

Context : a very tough market, the 360 has already taken shares, and the wii is to arrive at the same time. The concurrence is also diversified : xbox is very online-gaming oriented, wii is fun with buddies oriented and the ps3 itself is an all puposes console + all movie formats readable (except hd-dvd). Objective : take the high end position in this generation, ps2 wasn't the "Sony" of it's time, but the ps3 should be, just as the psp is already for the portable market. Make the sony brand fully include the ps3. Target : position the ps3 as the continuity of the ps2 in the gaming aspects to keep as many of it's previous base as possible + appeal to big budgets who already own an hd-tv, want to use blue-rays, and should buy more games and accessories than the average kid would. Promess : You'll have everything you want from a console and more. With a few more bucks you're there. Tone : a cold crystal like athmosphere, connotating the luxury of the product. Establish a connivence with the child inside all gamers, provoke the compulsive buyer to come out, his desire to burst and consume him, in a pavlovian way. If the consumer doesn't react to the emotivity, be scandaleous and mysterious to awake his curiosity.

.. .

Didn't you guys see 2001? Obelisk.

by aguycalleddave - 2006-10-28 12:17:54
The few other ps3 adds recently...

The previous ads showed and described what the PS3 can do, this was just scary. I'm going to struggle to get to sleep tonight. hold me *faints*

by - 2006-10-28 20:58:10
wtf

wtf!

by - 2006-10-30 22:04:02
ps3

who the hell cares about the commercials..when i beast is release 1117 the rest is history!!!!!

by - 2006-11-03 19:09:27
It's pretty obvious

I am pretty sure the concept is this... as next gen approaches, PS3 (360, even) with the ability to link to peripherals like USB, play DVD and Blu-Ray, show photos, listen to mp3's (via USB), and surf the internet it will become sort of like the central part of a home entertainment system. Hence, "mama". Plus, I think it's very cool, and effective advertising. I like it.

by FreeJ - 2006-11-06 00:55:24
mkay

i say the baby dll wants it but then the ps3 engulfs its mind in hardcore gaming experience hence the flashing of the eyes

by - 2006-11-06 14:38:22
Ok...

I've seen this commercial before and I must say, That is perhaps teh most creepiest things i've ever seen. I like playstation, but that just doesn't make any sence. Dancing walruses with clown suits and hockey masks make more sence than that. Lately, I think Sony has been acting odd I must admit, and this is perfect evidence. Anyways, I can't wait for the PS3. Check out their website for more white room madness!

by - 2006-11-07 04:39:30
This Is what it's about

Alright I've seen it once, and as a psychologist major, I can tell you what this commercial is representing. Based on the past, game systems have been toys. Using a baby in the commercial is a representation of this, however its a doll instead of a real baby. Why? Becuase its trying to convince the viewer that the PS3 is capable of gong beyond the power of any console and rendering emotion within a being containing none. The awe-inspired, now emotionally imbued baby cries as gameplay, screenshots and sounds go through its wee little mind. It begins to un-cry as it loses the emotions that the PS3 gives it. As the system shuts off, the baby does as well. This commercial is pretty deep.

by - 2006-11-07 06:52:36
??????

Not bad for a thesis... u sound like u know what u are talking about.. do u work for sony??!!!! nah but i like ur explanation..

by - 2006-11-07 06:57:45
I LIKE UR THESIS TOO OR STATEMENT

BUT I THINK THAT WHAT SONY WANTS IS FOR ALL OF US TO BE TALKING ABOUT IT, AND THATS WHAT WE ARE DOING, ISNT? LOOK HOW FAR WE HAVE GOTTEN, 46 COMENTS AND COUNTING.

by - 2006-11-07 12:42:42
ill explain

very creepy advert, scarier than the exorcist, it says play beyond at the end because the baby is doing extrodinary things, like the ps3 will be able to do......beyond the reality of any other console

by Starayo - 2006-11-07 13:10:38
Why am I the only one that sees this?

The red/orange eyes towards the end of it... despite being reflections, clearly states that the doll and ps3 are evil. The power of Christ compels you!

by - 2006-11-07 13:57:08
extraordinary?

What extraordinary things?

by - 2006-11-07 14:04:30
it's obvious!

it's them saying that the ps3 is really powerful and apparently has the power to make a toy baby come to life and do all those things. perhaps it just turned the baby on and it's already programmed to do that? Course the baby lifts up the ps3 itself after.. dont know about that part. it's like the rubik's cube ad they did, same concept- ps3 can solve rubik's cube in 2 seconds or so.

by - 2006-11-07 18:54:52
Space Odyssey

The Ps3 is the Monolith. Like in 2001: A Space Odyssey

by - 2006-11-08 23:40:10
creepy

anyone ever see 2001 A Space Odyssey? That's what this ad is based on.. at the end of the movie a baby looks at a giant black monolith and receives inifinite intelligence...... though i dont think the ps3's gonna be giving much intelligence to anyone.

by - 2006-11-10 11:21:28
Teh Commercial

This is basically a huge metaphor. The baby represents that the PS3 is brand new, something like a "newborn baby". Its actions are what we're going to feel. First it seemed neutral and reached out for the system, like how we are reaching out for it, waiting for it to be released. It then laughed hysterically, much like how we are going crazy with anticipation. It then cried, and if you noticed, it showed effects in the eyes such as explosions and I think I saw fire. It cried much like how some fans will when they will be able to experience the graphics for the first time, it then took back the tears as it became focused on the graphics. You'll notice at the end, it has the infants reflection in the PS3. Again, it's to say that the PS3 is a "newborn baby". Why the baby was a toy doll, i'm figuring that it was opposite to say that the PS3 is also a toy or that it's toying with emotions. Anyways, that's what I got out of that commercial. Other than that, it's frigging creepy.
