The Japanese aren't lining up for the PS3?

So the PS3's launching in Japan in two days, and IGN noticed that the Japanese aren't lining up for it. These guys below (left) are lining up for the DS at the Bic Camera in Yurakucho. According to IGN, "the scene was repeated at Bics throughout Tokyo." The one on the right is for the Wii, seen a couple of hours ago in Tokyo.

DS line Wii line

So why the lack of err, PS3 lines? IGN says major retailers are going to use the lottery system. For example, the Bic Camera store in Shibuya will start handing out lottery tickets at around nine in the morning on Saturday, with the drawing scheduled around 11a.m. The lucky winners will get to choose either a 60 gig model or the 20 gig unit, while the losers will, er... probably go home crying.

Of course, other stores will use the traditional "line-up system," such as the Bic Camera franchise located in Yurakucho and the Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku. The former will have lines as early as a seven in the morning, while the latter will have one at 8:30a.m. Apparently, Ken Kutaragi will make an appearance in both stores, thus the slight time difference.

In any case, the lack of lines in Tokyo does not point out that Sony is losing its touch among the Japanese. Quite the contrary, actually. There were reports that punks were driven out at one shop when they tried to camp out Wednesday night, in anticipation for the PS3 launch.

There's nothing to line-up for.

There are only 80k in Japan and all the major stores are doing lotteries.

Other stores aren't allowing people to line up too earyl... read the article its all in there.

» myth, chill

LOL, myth I wasn't raggin on the PS3. I am a PS3 fan.

I was simply pointing out there is no point waiting in line when you are just gonna be put into a big raffle. You can show up anytime before the drawing and you have an equal chance.

Try not to be such an idiot.

» PS myth

80k is not a lot.

The population of Japan is roughly half of that of the US.

400k isn't a lot here, and 80k is not a lot there. hence the reason there will massive shortages for quite some time. Not as bad as the 360 though.

Hang in there Europe your day is coming.

once again, another misleading article by qj.net

» why they would line up for a product that'll sell only in two days?

I mean, WTF is this article atlking about?

1st: Only 80k PS3 so everyone that didn't pre-ordered one is doomed for the launch ( 1st month at least )

2nd: They also didn't line up for the ps2 or the psp nor for the ds TWO DAYS before!!!! maybe on the 10th night, OR in the morning, but before? no way!

who need more reason, I mean, the 1st one is convincing enough!

ps: Why the ***** do I continu to read Qj... I suppose it's because Qj's the only site I know of it's kind... anyway, I suppose I should stop reading of commenting those kind of useless article, maybe they would stop creating those if nobody "jump it up" or post comments on..

» How do you sleep at night Qj?

You'd think I was dealing with radical politics with the amount of spin you guys tried to put on this article.

Making claims of Sony losing touch with Japan and such and then only brushing over the facts of why nobody is really lining up.

This is a sad sad attempt at journalism.

well i'd take my chances on lining up but definitely NOT 3-4 nights before launch... as already mentioned, there's going to be only 80k units

unless they had about 1mil units (PS2 launch), it's not worth spending nights in the line

are you a dumbass ps3 fanboy?

» yes

i was referrring to the subsequent shipments. MS had a lot of problems following up their launch shipments.

Sony should (and says they will, but who knows) be able to deliver about a million units a onth follwing the launch shipment. Something MS was unable to do for various reasons.

by truth - 2006-11-09 15:00
» PS you a wrong

the 360 launch was not much more than 400k. In fact if I remember right it was 350k. (In NA)

So it appears... you're the dumbass, friend. (does the Dr. Evil pinky thing)

by sakura - 2006-11-09 15:12
» @truth

actually it was 350k in the us for the 360 with 900k by dec, also by dec they shiped 1.5 million world wide, that will be alot more than sony can push out with its current trend.

by truth - 2006-11-09 15:31
» sakura

well, Sony is sticking with the 1-1.2 million in the USA (or NA, whatever) by the end of the year.

But wasn't there a dead zone until march for the 360? I remember people just being furious cuz they were nowhere to be found. And MS has said that their early production probelms were the reason they are behind their goal for units sold.

Anyways, I'll look into it.

by Spector - 2006-11-09 15:44
» Geusstimation

First off yes we can only really go by what Sony is telling us for their end of the year mark (wether you find that trust worthy or not is completely a personal matter).

Sakura mentioned a current trend, but unless he has some sort of in with Sony there really isn't enough information to be making trend assumptions yet. Sony has talk that they are doing well with rampping up their unit production so I see the mark as plausible.
