The gods are not happy: Jimmy Page and Jack White find learning music through Guitar Hero 'sad' |
Ó
Page: You think of the drum part that John Bonham did on Led Zeppelin's first track on the first album, Good Times Bad TImes. How many drummers in the world can play that part, let alone on Christmas morning?
White: It's depressing to have a label come and tell you that [Guitar Hero] ishow kids are learning about music and experiencing music. [Without limiting] which format people should get their music in... if you have to be in a video game to get in front of them, that's a little sad.
If you don't mind my sharing my opinion, I think the sad bit here is how musicians are being too negative with the proliferation of music video games. Yes, playing the real thing is always better -- there's no other alternative to it, honestly. But at the same time, you have to give credit where credit is due.
My belief is that these video games actually do help enrich the knowledge and the experience of those playing it, especially the kids, and so develop a wider appreciation for music. Not a wider understanding of the art per se, but at least recognition and appreciation.
It's just another avenue for music to spread. Music is supposed to be fun. Music video games just upped the fun level to another notch. Frankly, if not for these music video games, I think kids of the younger generation will not have access to great bands like Led Zep and The White Stripes, probably out of intimidation or simply out of ignorance.
I understand why they would want to retain the art form "pure" in the strictest sense, but come on. Times are evolving. It's better to adapt than get left behind gathering dust in a collector's box up in the attic.
We rock, we roll.

But if it wasn't for GH I would never have started listening to heavy metal. I listened to strictly underground rap until I played this game. Now I listen to more metal (and actually a whole bunch of other genres but mostly metal) and I would say it's almost entirely because of GH. So i say thank you GH for exposing me to more music.

Playing an instrument (solo) is great, using something like Rock Band to expand your ability to follow beat and tempo through an entire song or set while actually paying attention to what you are doing with your body CAN help an amateur become and expert. There is no substitute for practice, and this is just another way to practice with real interactive feedback - so what if some kids think they are the stars because they can play it on a game!
I truly wish I had been exposed to something similar while I was learning guitar, I probably wouldn't have packed it away as a lost cause after a few horrible "wannabe band" experiences.

I played Rock Band 2, heard the song "De-Luxe" by Lush, and searched them since I liked the song. I discovered their main genre was a movement called "Shoegaze", which is now my favorite musical genre. More than half of my favorite bands fall into this category.
These games are also the main reason I wanted to get my own *real* guitar and bass guitars.

Basically, some heads in a studio someplace decided X Y and Z songs should be in the game. Maybe it was a vote, but, ultimately, somebody had to make a final list of things to include. White's point was that you shouldn't have had somebody tell you which music is good and you should listen to it but rather you should go out and EXPLORE the world of music to find what you like.
I would suggest properly ID3-tagged MP3 files and a look over at what last.fm can do to broaden your music horizons.

In order for what you said to have any merit you would first have to prove that GH was someone's ONLY SOURCE of music.
Just because there is a video game on a store shelf, that doesn't mean those song and ONLY songs are deemed as good and people should ONLY listen to those songs.
What you said was lame at best and has nothing to do with the article.
GH and Rockband have ADDED to the many ways people can experience music. In no way does GH or Rockband REPLACE how music is experienced.
At age 32 I had already been VERY MUCH exposed to music in various ways. Rockband opened up the world of drumming to me. Since then I started taking lessons.
Page and White are total idiots. End of that story.

Led Zeppelin was at the forefront of the creation of heavy rock\metal. They helped to forge a new genre and a new generation!
The White Stripes were a terrible Green Day wannabe band except having no bassist made them even more terrible. Jack White's voice is irritating and cracky, and his guitar playing is no better.

Secondly, Art purists bother me. Art is a fluid thing to be interpreted by the world. I believe part of art it the changing of an already good thing to reflect something different. When i heard about the movie producers suing companies that edited bad content out of movies for families to watch, and then music people getting ticked at the added drum rolls and finales in their songs, i lost respect for those people.

Play it for fun, don't try and bull***** what it is.

Your logic doesn't follow. NarooN clearly stated:
"If it weren't for me playing GH 1 and 2, and both of the Rock Bands, half the bands I listen to, I still wouldn't know about."
So, here, he clearly states (MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ FIRST) that half of his musical tastes are because of GH1 2 and RB.
But sure, go ahead and make up statements. You're pretty good at that and seem to do it a lot. What a massive tool you have to be for somebody to compile a list of songs for you to be "exposed to".
It's like if you decided go pick up and play games because you heard they were on somebody's top 100 list (note I haven't said 'only play games on a top 100 list').

That's half of the bands, not musical tastes. And half of the bands was a small over-exaggeration. Like I said, the only genre I wasn't listening to or aware of was the shoegaze scene, so there you go, kid.

MORE than half of the new bands i listen to, i heard first in rockband or GHx... paramore for instance.
my interest in music as a whole dropped off around 2001, shortly after i became an adult with a job and a life...
so they are not just idiots, what they said applies to me. do i think it's sad? no. would i care enough to seek it out otherwise. no.
the only thing i fault them for is failing to have the perspective they should after so many years... everyone is different and it works for me.

To quote YOU - "White's point was that you shouldn't have had somebody tell you which music is good and you should listen to it but rather you should go out and EXPLORE the world of music to find what you like."
I was addressing YOU, not naroon.
