OblivionWe hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Bethesda Softworks has confirmed that the release of the PS3 version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is pushed back to Q1 2007. This comes just a few days after online retailers started listing the title as "coming in 2007".

Bethesda didn't offer a reason for the delay - a move that's gotten speculative minds to go into full gear. There have been suspicions that the delay is linked to PS3 development difficulties. Further ramblings point to the low supply of PS3 as the main culprit, saying that publishers are deterred from rushing games to the market with scant supply of P3 units coming at launch day.

While some would be disappointed with this development (or lack of it), others would simply call it a case of deja vu. If you would recall, Oblivion also missed the Xbox 360 launch. So, it's really not surprising.

This brings the total number of PS3 launch titles to 20 - one title short of the list revealed at the 2006 Sony Gamers Day. With F.E.A.R and Sonic the Hedgehog rumored to go the way of Oblivion, we sure hope that this delay doesn't become a trend.

Ever since Morrowind, the Elder Scroll games have just gotten worse. I don't think anyone saw this as a system seller, anyways.

Bring on Resistance: Fall of Man!

its rather sad that you have to resort to saying things like this just to defend your console.

all the other games suck but thats okay because there is one good one, yup.

Gears of Wars owns your ass and you know it.

oh yeah and HAHAHAHA delayed.

Just so you know you are gloating about the first must have title for the 360 and the console has been out for a year, and next year when Halo 3 comes out you'll have 2!

And my heart aches at he fact I can only play Oblivion on my PC (althought I finished doing that awhile ago).

And my launch game purchase list remains unphased... Genji, Resistance, Untold Legends.

it's also sad seeing as he didn't even bash Gears of War. for all you know he thinks it's a great game, but just wished single player was longer...

This game wouldnt be a system seller anyway. Sure its a deep RPG but the reality is that the game is soo complex for the average gamer.

I dont know how many people I come across who dont know how to level up. Thats the sad fact about this game.

Only the hardcore RPG gamers enjoy the game. The traditional and other gamers, find oblivion to be too much work.

I thought you would be more interested in the quality of the gameplay (both single and online), not the duration of the single player game!

Firstly, I don't share his attitude overall (a delayed game is nothing to laugh about), but Gears of War is definately something special, especially when we see so many games fall well below their potential prior to release.

It's special because must have games are not guaranteed. Look at the PSP, it's been out for almost two years (launched Dec 2004 in Japan), and yet it STILL lacks a must have game, despite the strength of the Playstation brand. In comparison, the DS has had a number of must have 'killer apps' since launch (Nintendogs and Brain Training in particular).

# Wasn't trying to put down GoWSpector 2006-11-09 19:47
I'll definately give it to the 360 GoW is an amazing game and I won't trash talk it, but that just brings me to the point that it has taken a year for 360 to get a killer app, and in the console market that's a huge deal breaker.

From what will be coming out even just by the spring for PS3 there are plenty of games with very good killer app promise and in more than one genre which gives me the variety I need (imo 360 can only get FPSs right much akin to its predecesor).

And on the topic of the PSP it might be making a very slow but strong move in the near future. I'm not saying PSP roxorz or anything but it still has a future. Powerstone Collection just came out for it, it has Metal Gear Solid: Ops coming out soon, and (the one that will almost definately cause me to buy a PSP) Gitaroo Man Lives. Once again I'm not saying it will have a chance at dethroning DS, but it isn't dead.

... I'm just saying we shouldn't take such games for granted, because over the years we see many games with similar promise that completely fail to deliver.

Hence such games are rare.

The PS2 took 15 months from it's launch in Japan to get it's killer game in the form of GT3 A:Spec, and 20 months for it's second, MGS2.

Of course, the PS2 built upon the success of the Playstation and so gamers were willing to wait for these games just as some gamers are waiting for Halo 3 today.

BTW, GoW is played in 3rd person (like RE4), not 1st person, hence it's not a FPS, that will be Halo 3.

As for the PSP, we'll wait and see, and like your comments about GoW, I wasn't putting it down, just pointing out that killer apps are rare, no matter how good the console or how popular the brand. :)

Wasn't expecting it at Playstation 3's launch day anyway. I was targeting it for 2007. I want to get this game and all, but there are others to get, and i want to get this game at a bargain anyway. I'm really targeting Unreal Tournament 2007 for Q1 2007, i've been playing Unreal Tournament 2004 on PC since.

First I woulnd't use the Japan launch date for when to start your count since we aren't in Japan cause if we were we'd have lots of different titles we'd be able to talk about. From the October 2000 launch you had

In march (5 months time) Onimusha: Warlords which had great gameplay and story and atleast imo was an amazing game which lead to even greater sequels.

For honorable mentions you could go with...

Zone of the Enders

Dynasty Warriors

Midnight Club

Tekken Tag

all of which came out before on in March with Onimusha.

Also Final Fantasy X came out in December 2001, and Socom was August 2002, well after GT3 and MGS2.

And on the subject of calling GoW an FPS sorry I'm just generalizing because even like Socom I call an FPS, but I guess I'll just say TPS then. Cause even though it's in third person I wouldn't go calling it action/adventure because of the usage style with the guns.

# Er-hem, Japan does count...Guest 2006-11-10 06:57
..since that is where the PS2 made it's worldwide debut, Japan is were the console was first launched! It doesn't matter where YOU, I or any other gamer happens to live, the PS2 arrived on March 4th 2000 in Japan. Hence 15 months is how long it took for the first killer app to appear. Yes it's less for US gamers, even less for Europeon gamers, but only because of a staggered launch.

The PS3 launches tomorrow, so everything can now be measured from THAT date, not the US date next week and certainly not the European date of March next year (I live in the UK).

Besides, we were talking about 'killer app' games, and none of the games you mention fall into that category. Some great games yes, but killer apps no. It's not the same thing Spector. :)

Anyway, this is way off topic now, and the PS3 launches tomorrow, so I'll end now.

They say "The proof of the pudding is in the eating", well Japanese gamers are about to enjoy a feast. Let's hope it tastes as good as it looks.

Oh and... thanks for a good discussion. :)

Anyway thanks for the good argument as well and I'm glad this didn't get flamed or anything nice to have a level headed debate once in awhile here.

What do you mean the elder scrolls games have been getting WORSE since morrowind.

1. Only Oblivion has launched (if you are going to exclude expansions).

2. What the hell? You honestly think morrowind was BETTER than oblivion? I don't think you've played oblivion.
