The commercial uses of the Playstation 3? |
Ó
Forbes recently reported on some happenings in the PS3 world, but not for the same reasons we normally ascribe to. Their recent report talked about the recent discussions Sony has been having with companies for the potential commercial use of the PS3, specifically its cell processor. One of the many non-commercial, but similar, uses the PS3 has been going through recently has been the rise in the awesomeness that is distributed computing.
Through the PS3 Folding@Home network, PS3 users everywhere have had the chance to help unlock the secrets of human diseases in an effort to find a cure. Of course, there's a long way to go, but it does show that the Cell processor has a ton of power that can be used for something other than gaming and entertainment.
What we want to know is this, what company do you want to see utilizing the power of the Cell? What commercial do you think the PS3 and its processor should have, in addition to being a great George Foreman grill clone? If you're lucky, someone from Sony may be reading this and saying, "Of course! We should try that!" Talk about unintended influence, right?

Commercial applications would be better off using hardware with a non-crippled version of the Cell where all of the SPUs are enabled and with more memory to work with.
Much rather be focusing on setiathome. We should have options! In fact why dont we just ask every university to contribute some sort of project to the PS3 and make it available for for us to decide what to install and run.
this isn't news...we've known for a while that the cell will be used in various products. THEY'RE NOT USING THE PS3, THEY'RE USING THE CELL PROCESSOR. this topic is misleading.
furthermore, to hoodlum, seti@home is a waste of time. what results have come from it? none. folding@home is much more reasonable.
different... Folding is non-profit for Sony... if Sony enters into a commercial agreement for a service resembling that of Folding@Home... what do I get in return for keeping my console running???
