Event Games

Remember when Rambo and Commando were big event movies? Hot damn, it used to be so easy to impress people! Stick a muscular guy in a Cambodian village and give him a big black gun and you've got top class entertainment for the whole family. But as with everything else these days the stakes have gotten higher, much higher. The big event games are coming, the epics of our time, games that will leave you breathless, eyes wide in wonder and mouths agape. What's your fancy?

HALO 3

Halo 3 - Image 1    Halo 3 - Image 2    Halo 3 - Image 3

There's just no stopping Halo 3 from becoming an juggernaut at retail. It's the kind of rare franchise that crosses the boundary between the hardcore and casual fans. I bet the accountants at Microsoft are getting dizzy just anticipating how much cash this game's gonna bring, and gamers have been thrown into a state of absolute frenzy since seeing the first trailer at E3.

KILLZONE
Killzone - Image 1    Killzone - Image 2    Killzone - Image 3

Once billed as Sony's "Halo Killer", a title that likely brought more grief than good for Guerrilla, the sequel to their premiere entry in the Killzone universe is still somewhat shrouded in mystery. It can be argued that no one's ever really seen a single frame from Killzone 2, heck we don't even know that it's called Killzone 2, but that doesn't change the fact that it's going to be huge when it hits. Having passed up E3, the sentiment is that Guerrilla either has something very, very special to show, or is having some trouble living up to that amazing video from last year. Personally I'm hoping for the former.

HEAVENLY SWORD
Heavenly Sword - Image 1    Heavenly Sword - Image 2    Heavenly Sword - Image 3

There are some question marks hovering above this game right now, is the whole thing set in numerous arenas such as the one we've seen in the trailers and screens? What's the storyline? Will we be adventuring and exploring? Whatever the case, I predict this one's going to be big, really big. Ninja Theory, the guys behind the wheel don't have a particularly healthy track record, but they've been working on this for a long, long time and the quality of the product is becoming ever more apparent.

ELVEON
Elveon - Image 1    Elveon - Image 2    Elveon - Image 3

I was lucky enough to get a good look at this title when it was shown behind closed doors at E3, and all I have to say is "wow". My hat goes off to the boys at 10tacle, the depth and history of the world they're creating is massive, and the game itself suitably ambitious in nature. You too will say "wow".

MASS EFFECT
Mass Effect - Image 1    Mass Effect - Image 2    Mass Effect - Image 3

These guys also made KOTOR, that's Knights Of The Old Republic... need I really say more? The buzz kicked up by this title at E3 by those who saw it showing behind closed doors has reached critical mass... get it? Arf!

METROID PRIME 3: CORRUPTION
Metroid Prime: Corruption - Image 1    Metroid Prime: Corruption - Image 2    Metroid Prime: Corruption - Image 3

Ever since Samus made her comeback on the 'cube, there's been no slowing the old gal down. The prospect of Retro Studios marrying their game design genius with  the Wii's innovative new control input is enough to give any hardcore gamer a strong case of the "gimme, gimme's"

METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS
Metal Gear Solid 4 - Image 1    Metal Gear Solid 4 - Image 2    Metal Gear Solid 4 - Image 3

Likely the culmination of one of the greatest sagas in the history of videogames. The Metal Gear games have always been the perfect marriage of cinematic storytelling, great gameplay, and technical prowess. The fourth and possibly last in the series looks to once again redefine what we've come to know of the tactical stealth espionage genre. Thank you Kojima.

GEARS OF WAR
Gears of war - Image 1    Gears of war - Image 2    Gears of war - Image 3

Once considered by me to be the "warm up to Halo 3", Gears of War blew the hinges off E3, and geeks in attendance had to be carted away on trolleys, many catatonic, some still conscious but drooling like babies. Wait till Emergence Day hits and you see just how good this game looks, and just how badass it is to play, just you wait.

SUPER MARIO GALAXY
Super Mario Galaxy - Image 1    Super Mario Galaxy - Image 2    Super Mario Galaxy - Image 3

It doesn't have to be all doom and gloom and big bad uber soldiers with massive guns y'know. Mario's back in the first true sequel to Mario 64, and he's bringing with him the power of Mr Miyamoto's videogame Wii-zardry... (I'm on a roll here!)

ASSASSIN'S CREED
Assassin's Creed - Image 1    Assassin's Creed - Image 2    Assassin's Creed - Image 3

If the team's previous effort,Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, is anything to go by then Assassin's Creed is going to be a breakout blockbuster for sure, but better than that it's going to have the most innovative gameplay this side of Miyamoto. Have a close look at these screens, the last one in particular. Look from face to face in the crowd, all real people who will act and react to you. Welcome to the next generation.

Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess
The Legend Of Zelda: The Twilight Princess - Image 1    The Legend Of Zelda: The Twilight Princess - Image 2    The Legend Of Zelda: The Twilight Princess - Image 3

Some people have been waiting patiently for this game since that first Gamecube tech demo. It's finally coming, and bigger, badder and better than ever before. This game's going to be the Gamecubes swansong, and usher in Nintendo's revolution in a big way.

FINAL FANTASY XIII
Final Fatasy XIII - Image 1    Final Fatasy XIII - Image 2    Final Fatasy XIII - Image 3

There's been thirteen of them (more if you count the various spinoffs) and the first was supposed to be the last.  Square's got huge plans for this game, and we've only just begun to get a glimpse at what it'll offer.

AQUATEEN HUNGER FORCE
Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Image 1    Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Image 2    Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Image 3

We've been promised the world by Flargen and Dingle, the developers of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Realistic Meatwad AI, Shotgun toting Carl and even a geographically accurate representation of the Moon (with 1/3 less gravity than our earth even). Personally I'm inclined to agree with them, bring on the action bills I say!

So what do you guys think are the titles on the horizon that qualify as epic? Games that will not only sell tons, but become bonafide classics.

Im really looking forward to...

-Halo 3 (duh)

-Gears of War (must...shoot...things)

-Final Fantasy 13 (too bad im not shelling out near 700 bones to play it)

-Super Mario Galaxy (did u see the boss battle? how cool was that??)

-Zelda (it just keeps getting better and better...)

-Elveon (just looks incredible)

I couldnt care less about...

-MGS4 (what is the big deal about this? ive played the others, and yeah, theyre fun, but its not like its worth buying a new console just to play it)

-Metroid (SNES metroid was awesome, but since then it seems like they just try and do too much with it, but who knows, the Wiimote may make it incredible)

-ATHF (hilarious, but this would be an awful awful game...anyone remember when they used to try and make video games of tv shows? beavis and butthead? AH real monsters? Ren and stimpy? actually, those games were pretty fun, now that i think about it...but so was everything on SNES)

I liked halo alot. When halo2 came out it was the biggest peice of crap ive ever played. First off the single player takes literally 4 hours to beat. So much for the single player. So lets give the multilplayer a try. I play it for ten minutes and think its the biggest and most boring game ive played. Im going to give the halo series on last try before i call it quits. Bungie this game better have some *****ing awesom single player or im not buying it.

Halo 1 was cut and paste crapness. One of the most insanely boring games ever - not only were the levels repetative they make you go through them TWICE! Lazy ass dev. Halo 2 however fixed that and was easily ten times the game H1 was.

» lol...

Games on the list worth being there:

- Heavenly Sword - Just look at it...

- MGS4 - No game matches the depth.

- Final Fantasy - It's final Fantasy... nuff said.

- Gears of War - Looks incredible

- Assassin's Creed - Prince of Persia on crack!

- Elveon

- Zelda

- Killzone - the first had huge potentional and now on new hardware can only expect better.. this game is awesome.

Halo doesn't interest me at all... it's a first person shooter, that looks and feels like everything else on the market and the story is hardly something to die for.. perhaps Halo 3 will prove me wrong, but it seems unlikely... IMO most over-hyped game of all time... What's so great about it?

» Halo

Halo is the most popular console FPS game. Why? its easy to play and a total beginner could pick up the game and play.

Halo will never live up to the level of PC FPS games. The PC version of Halo was a bit better but limiting to 16 players was just a wrong move to make. This is why the PC version of Halo2 will never happen.

So im not looking forward to Halo3. I played Halo with my friends all the time. The fact that theres 16 of us in the same place screaming and yelling at each other is better then Halo2 Match-making by far. Halo Parties have always been the weekend thing for me and my co-workers and Halo2 just doesnt cut it anymore.

Talk about a hype machine, originally Halo was envisioned to be a free roaming FPS. Master cheif lands on the halo then you go across the land ambush things take out forts and stuff. Then Micro bought out Bungie and it became a pretty standard and very repetative shooter. Halo 2 is even more blatantly worse, it maddens me that people who play this game think its the epitome of entertainment, yet won't play any thing else in the genre, Far Cry > Halo, Half-life(especially HL2) > Halo, Call of Duty > Halo, Unreal 200X(obviously multiplayer side here) > Halo, Counter Strike > Halo. Problem is people baought it from hype, because their friend said it was good, or were at there friend's house and picked up a controller; then was like wow this game if fun and exciting, problem is: so is almost any FPS and to a greater extent, with richer gameplay and story as well. Halo gets 7 out of 10, it is teh mediocre, but it shouldn't have been.

Halo 2 will be coming out on the PC, fyi.

It will only work with Windows Vista though, rather than Windows XP.

And I just think that Halo is an overhyped series. The first was good, the second sucked, and the third will suck but have more polygons and better textures. Of course, people will buy it, just because it's Halo.

» Halo

Apparently people aren't interested in looking at the top 10 played games on xbox live, because um....if you look its Halo 2. Well you say they might just play it because they spent money on it, and don't want it to go to waste, well its been quite a while and its still number 1 on the charts. This says that there are a ton of people who love this game. You think everyone is like you and hates it, your wrong. There might be a lot of people who hate it, but that doesn't come close to the massive amount of people who still play it more than any other game out there on XBL. So if your going to bash a game don't bring "everyone else" into it if you think they might agree with you, because we don't.

Now to talk about whats going on here, Halo 3, Gears of War, and Super Mario Galaxy look to be amazing games and the Wii will be the other next-gen system i pick up. The biggest reason is the Wii gives that old school feeling with a bunch of good titles coming up for a grand old price that is much lower than the PS3, and the 360 has live, the most amazing online system i have ever seen with really good games to play on it.

» Enough

I think everyone has had enough of fps, games are looking forwards to are everyone of those games exept halo and hunger team aqua force, yes I know that halo is suppose to be this super fun fps but I just find it boring for some reason same goes for GTA San Andreas, Zelda is probably gonna be good but so far i'm not really that impressed for what I have seen, after seeing how the next gen games are going to look like Zelda just looks mediocre.

» hard core gamer and videogame techie

i read everyones post and will simply add.. if you like halo, whether 1 or 2 most likely you will like 3, however in my opinion i am not looking foward to that game, it does have alot of hype surrounding it, and killzone was a solid fps for the ps2 but don't want that to come out anytime soon, i will wait for 2008, if that game can achieve the same physics and graphic level seen at E3. i am most excited about new ip's such as stranglehold, gears of war, red steel, and of course.. ASASSINs creed.. oh my .. read the article in game informer.. it takes modern day action/stealth games to a whole new level.

» yeah

to #5: I know i will, but im just saying the games offered for 360 and wii appeal to me enough to pay for them

and to #19: Yeah, i am a 360 fan... but im also a Wii and PS3 fan. I really wish I could pick up a PS3 but 600 bucks plus games is just too much for me. I dont have that much money, I could barely afford the 360. And im sorry if you think not liking MGS4 makes me a fanboy

And wow, I didnt realize so many people disliked halo 2. I mean, i could understand it not being your favorite game, but to hate it? To each their own, i guess.

by mr toasty - 2006-05-25 08:09
» meh

I never really played much halo (ps2 and gamecube) but I personally like more realistic FPSs (socom :P).

Does anyone feel like all the games are blending together to them? I may have to hold off on the new system for a while.

i think army of two should be a bigggggg seller. to stop your team mate from bleeding to death sometimes you have to shove a tampon in the bullet wound.
