The bang WILL be worth the buck: Florin talks about the PS3's price tag

Sony's shiny, sleek black console should pay for itself in two years' time, Electronic Arts' head honcho Gerhard Florin reassured players in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

"Look at the price in two years' time, and then you can say whether it's too high," says Florin.

"Whether it's too high or not the consumer has to decide, but I don't think for the first year the price will be a problem which holds anything back."

It's just not the PS3 that EA's keeping a watchful eye on, though. "I wouldn't make any judgements within the next two years," the EA boss comments. "The first two years will clearly be an open race, everybody will do very well. I believe all three [consoles] are worth supporting in different ways."

When asked about EA's future strategy regarding support for all three contenders, Florin had this to say:

"Something like Harry Potter is a very clear candidate to lead on the Wii. Shooters like Medal of Honor, Black, we will clearly concentrate on PlayStation 3 because we need Cell processor power. Then we've got more strategic, online-orientated games that we concentrate more on 360. "

I own both a 360 and a PS3 - so no biased fanboyism here...

But I have to say that I'm terribly dissapointed with my PS3. Now that I've played Motorstorm to death, other than the never-ending, almost weekly Sony updates to my PS3 - there's nothing to do with the dam thing! All of the other games out for PS3 I've long since played on my 360. And honestly, I enjoy them more on my 360 (acheivements FTW). I wish Sony would hurry up and make my PS3 purchase worthwhile. Geezz....

Oh, at least I only paid 500 US clams for my PS3... kind helps deaden the longing for decent PS3 games. Yup - I bought a unit returned to the store (lots were returned by BORED PS3 owners lol - that's what the sales clerks said was the #1 return reason). Give us some games SONY! I want to play Lair and Heavenly Sword soon!

Also I find the Xbox 360 much more pleasurable during sexual intercourse. Slimmer body, well trimmed, soft to touch. Makes it the perfect sexual partner.

The PS3 will only be worth less and less with time. It will not be a cheap blu ray player for long, and with HD-DVD making a strong comeback, not as many people will even want one. Wall Mart, the nations largest retailer, just announced exclusive support for HD-DVD due to the low price and soon to come $200 players. Does anybody understand what a huge blow that is to blu ray?

While the PS3 has 2 (currently) exclusive "system seller" games coming out, the rest of the exclusive games are average at best. Even though the games are great they will not sell many systems with the high price point. Say you want both Metal Gear 4 and Final Fantasy XIII games. $360 per game. Not a good value.

The other features the PS3 offers are nearly useless. The PS3 can never come close to replacing a computer unless sony allows access to the GPU. The cell's general purpose computing power is poor, and without the GPU you're better off buying a 4 year old PC for under $100.

If you can't even get a simple gameboy emulator to work on the PS3, that's just pathetic. The PSP is far better for homebrew, and it's not even intended for it!

Quotes like this make the guy look more stupid.

Suddenly shooters are for the PS3? Medal of Honor 3 looked much better with a smoother framerate on the XBOX 360, so how did he come to that conclusion? Aren't Medal of Honor and Black strategic online games anyway? All these comments about needing cell processor power are complete nonsense.

EA was so cheap they simply ported NFS Carbon to the PS3 and shined it up a bit while the 360 version was built from the ground up and had the nerver to charge 65 bux for it...Granted there is n oXbox oneversion to carbon so they had no choice but to build the 360 version from scratch makes sense but still EA pisses me off. Because the 360 version BLATANTLY looks next Gen compared to the PS3 version which is basically the PS2 version with that stupid little hud thingy when you race boss races.

My thoughts exactly, although, the way most kids talk on here, its like they've worked inside the industry for years.

None of it is the truth, from 2 'system sellers' (thats your opinion, i know people are waiting to buy the system when Lair and Heavenly Sword are released....not everybody wants MGS or FF you know)

And i'd love you to show me how HD-DVD is making a strong comeback. Or where you get your pricing information from. I could easily show you how much Blu-ray has dominated the HD format this year, and how many companies are behind Blu-ray than HD-DVD, but i suppose you guys try and do anything to put a negative spin on things.

Oh, and Played Medal of Honour 3 have we? On both systems? Your obvously a lucky boy ;)

First, How do you arrive at $360 per game? You can't take the price of the console and divide by 2 exclusive games, and come up with a per game cost of the console, you *****in moron!

God help us, if you ever become an accountant.

Exclusives are on their way out. 3rd party studio's cant afford to develop for just one platform.

On the shooter games, EA is talking about "WHAT IS TO COME". Taking full advantage of the CELL BE Processor, will result is some great shooting games. You cant compare CoD3 ported game to a fully developed, PS3 ONLY game. Thats like comparing R:FOM to CoD3.

EA knows a little more than you, at marketing. So leave it to the professionals.
